What is SALCRA up to in Serian?

On today’s show, we return to SALCRA as another community, just 10km from Kampung Mujat, featured on Radio Free Sarawak last week, are making a report against them. Beti anak Rasek tells how the community have found their land bulldozed without warning, notice or explanation. 28 villagers out of this 380 strong community have lost fruit trees and rubber trees. When questioned, the workers revealed that this was on the instructions of a Mr Ayan of SALCRA. A visit to SALCRA’s Samarahan office got them no further, but a trip to their YB Martin Ben of Kedup gave them the confirmation they needed: SALCRA indeed, apparently in cahoots with their Tuai Rumah and three members of the JKKK (the village committee) but certainly not in consultation with any of the other Kampung members, not least the ones who have lost their trees. The questions come thick and fast. How has the Tuai Rumah had the power to sign away this land and, more importantly, what is the connection, if any, with Kampung Mujat where the community are alleging that SALCRA have done some deal for their land with a West Malaysian plantation company? Just what are SALCRA up to in Serian?

Then we return to Spaoh in Gedong where last month the community were locked in an 8-day blockade with Indranika Jaya Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of WTK Plantations. Laja tells us how the company invaded their land, despite a court judgement against them, so the community seized their bulldozers, turning them over to the police. If a burglar was using a crowbar to force open your front door, wouldn’t you take it off him and hand it in? But it is the community who were arrested and forced to dismantle their blockade. Now the company is suing the impoverished villagers – typical bully boy tactics in this topsy turvy world!

Better news from Sabah as a long running land case is decided in favour of the community! For 15 years, 115 community members from Tongod have been dragged through the courts but finally, it has been settled through mediation under Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, Tan Sri Richard Malanjum. Bannie Lasimbang talks to us of the relief that the Natives of Sabah have seen their claims to NCR land respected at the highest level, even after such a long battle.

We end with the Baram Dam, as reaction sinks in to the news that the community land gazetted for the unpopular project has been released back to the community. Good news on the surface, they all say, but beware the hidden depths. Peter Kallang tells us how the blockade will remain in place until the official cancellation is announced. After all, as Solomon and Lawai Liu of Baram tell us, this kind of tactic has been seen before. Bakun too was on again off again and then finally on again, taking the community off guard. The people of Baram will not be hoodwinked by a pre-election gimmick.

Tune in for all this and more, plus our Borneo Bulletin.
