On today’s show, the Balingian land grab is starting to show its increasingly ugly underbelly as the ghost of Taib returns to haunt his former constituency and right on Adenan’s watch, proving his government as either liars or landgrabbers in his mentor’s mould. Matek ak Geram, a native of Balingian and a land activist with SADIA, shares how this land in Sebuluh is pemakai menoa and pulau galau (reserve land) for three communities who are just now starting to make noise about the bulldozers coming into their territory. Last week, YB Wong King Wei told us how in 2015 this land had been alienated to a duo from Sarawak at a low enough price to prompt a report to MACC. Quick as a flash, they sold it on to a group from Perak – GreenPro Farm Sdn Bhd. Matek shares how some areas are already planted with oil palm seedlings while the rest is being steadily leveled. The community, who have been living in the area for multiple generations, including some of Matek’s own family can only stand by and watch as this has been done without consultation let alone compensation. Of course, the current state government would claim that this is State Land given their refusal to recognize the rightful claims of the Dayak to pemakai menoa or pulau galau. Either way we look at it, this proves Adenan’s emphatic statement that there would be no more plantations on State land and Masing’s recent confirmation of this supposed policy change to be paper thin. For here we have it, a new, giant, bulldozing, land-stealing monster of a plantation. So, Adenan, is it a land grab or is it a new plantation on state land? Whatever the answer, it seems that this is the start of a very unbeautiful friendship with the rural folk, even for communities like this who have been BN faithful all along. Be warned before you believe any other pre-election promises of policy change.

Then we hear from Jermat Panjang, the PKR hopeful in Kelaka. After 5 terms with a BN government, the people of Kelaka constituency are still facing the same old issues – land grabs, lack of education, GST and the high cost of living. But, he says the voters may be looking for change, finally seeing through the old style of money politics and threats. As for Awang Tengah telling us not to listen to West Malaysian Opposition, Jermat asks the obvious question: what about the West Malaysian leaders of the BN coalition?

Nicholas Bawin continues the theme. With PKR’s Shamsul, the latest in a long list of West Malaysian opposition leaders and civil society representatives to be banned from entry, Bawin questions this policy and many others. Why should we exclude, he asks? It is not Sarawak style to bar people from our hospitality and totally against Adat – talk about West Malaysian imports.

Then we move on to election issues. Lee Wee Tak of the MERAP (Malaysian Electoral Roll Analysis project) tells us how Barisan Nasional have an assured win in Sarawak, or rather they have assured themselves a win through the redelineation exercise. After all, only 33 areas were subject to the redelineation with seats like Padungan, which should have been split, remaining untouched. With 11 new seats ‘guarantee menang’, the scale is already weighted in favour of the scale! Then Ann Teo tells us what the procedure will be from now until election from dissolution to nomination to polling day. Check your registration and your polling centre in advance, she warns. Every vote does count!

Tune in for all this and more, plus our Borneo Bulletin.
