On the show today: 'Controlled Release?' Residents of the area beneath Bakun Dam, where around half of Sarawak's native populations live, have been notified that owing to dangerously high water levels in the Dam the operators will begin a 'controlled release' of water starting IMMEDIATELY for the next MONTH. Anyone navigating the river is warned of the danger of the artificially high waters, but what of those not yet warned? What of the native people whose fields and roads and buildings are routinely flooded, crops destroyed and fishing made unavailable by these sudden and unpredicted artificial surges? We speak to the communities who say SEB have never compensated them for their losses or provided roads to withstand the deluges. Nor do these communities downstream of the 2nd largest hydropower installation in the world yet have electricity from the dam - they are still forced to depend on diesel generators despite having been forced from their lands to make way for the dam (whose safety issues remain glaring and unresolved). Also, we speak to the 'Let's Eat' activist who helps many of the displaced native poor obtain food in Miri City and we take a tour of Dayak Cultural Classes and Art.......

On today's show: Surang Laing from Long Lua Belaga speaks of the plight of the forgotten Penan people displaced by Murum Dam. The state government invested billions in the dam and certain politically connected people made billions from taking out the wood, but compensation to the Penan who have no livelihood as a result of the destruction of their area is given in terms of a mere RM250 monthly allowance per family plus food items supposedly worth RM600. BUT WHEN COVID STRUCK THE SUPPLIES STOPPED. Promised agricultural lots and training have still not been granted and the settlement areas for the 353 families are woefully under-provided with a promised school still missing. It seems the wealthy men from GPS who made all the money from the Penan lands express their guilt through cruelty towards the victims they have plundered - and since few are still registered to vote GPS don't care.....

We speak to local activist Alex Lihan about the lamentable services still at the settlement for Penan displaced by the hydropower dam at Murum, in particular regarding schooling, roads, water and electricity just a short distance from the mega-installation. On RFS today - as the state elections loom PN has taken snap action to STOP voter registration reveals Philip Jau of the Baram Peoples Action Committee. The government has announced the CLOSURE of the Miri National Registration Department's Mobile Unit (JPN) which means that thousands of native people who had been hoping after decades to get their Mykad registration, Birth Certificates and right to vote will again be deprived of these basic rights of citizenship thanks to corrupt decision makers. It costs over RM500 per person for any of these folk to get to town to sign up, Jau explains and as they have received nothing from the destruction of their lands they don't have the money. Unggal Raja from the Nibong Marudi Valley asks with the virus still around if any politicians would send their own kids to schools where children are forced to share a bed, like in Sarawak’s leaking rural boarding schools? And while on the subject of rural education he points out that rural schools have no internet, many of them are decaying with broken buildings and collapsed roofs. On RFS today, two top lawyers on the abuse of native land rights. Veteran legal campaigner Harrison Ngau says that the amendment of the Sarawak Land Code Section 6a represents a sham attempt by BN / GPS to gain the confidence and votes of the indigenous people of Sarawak. Official records show the average NCR land ownership per Original Longhouse in Sarawak amounts to over 15 000 hectares. So just recognising 1000 hectares is an insult to Sarawakians he says. And Dominique Ng from Kuching says he is mystified how so many native land rights lawyers have now joined a party run by loggers. And should Christians turn the other cheek to proposals to build non-Christian places of worship - their teaching says so?
