On the show today: Happy Sarawak Independence Day - so what has been the progress in 6 decades since? We don't often get GPS YBs from the state ruling coalition on the show, but we can listen to one of them speaking in the state parliament, Baram YB Anyie Ngau, listing the still unfulfilled promises made to his constituents. Among them upgrading the logging road in Baram to RI, providing better health facilities in the interior, providing internet and bank services. The question is why have these promises made at so many elections failed to be met by BN / GPS after more than 50 years of being mandated by the people of Baram? Also, we hear from Village Head, Garak Jalong, who contacted RFS on behalf of the residents of Long Lawen. Their land was taken for the Penan settlement in Tegulang but they were never compensated by the state government, nor by the developer of the Murum dam project. Once again the Sarawak authorities have simply failed to address native land issues, this time for the people of Kampung Lebor who have waited since 1997 (!!!) to receive a court ruling on their case against the powerful economic arm of the pilgrimage fund Tabung Haji. Meanwhile, YB Wilson Ugak points out in the Sarawak Assembly that there has been similar total inaction on his many longstanding pleas, including to build schools in the settlements for Penan families displaced by Murum Dam and a hospital for natives displaced by Bakun Dam - it seems no one wants to 'waste' money that could instead be poured into (for example) the latest grossly inflated land purchase by the Sarawak Economic Development Agency from the Taib family company Naim Cendera! And activist Denis Along talks about a peaceful action he plans for Merdeka Day to urge for a fair deal for the people of Sarawak.

On today's show: Fear builds downriver of Bakun as the rains continue to pour.and water is being released. Gabrial Atong is a resident of Punan Ba ​​where he says residents are in a state of anxiety. The only road that allows them to get out of the village is through the Samling /KTS Oil Palm Plantation Road to Bintulu. The journey will take 5 hours and they say they need a proper emergency exit. Villagers of Kampung Long Suit have offered a clap of hands to SEB, who after decades of delay have finally installed a promised solar energy power plant in the village. Yet, it seems the wealthy decision-makers behind the project don't want to make rural lives too easy - each family is only allowed enough electricity to EITHER run the fridge OR power five allocated light bulbs. Why not provide a little more when the rivers of Sarawak and native lands have been destroyed to power vast hydro-electric plants and create oil plantations all of which have provided an unwanted glut of electricity and bio-diesel? Do rural folk simply need to know their place as victims and 'squatters' as the Taib family have called the native people? On the show today: Decades of empty promises and still not even basic facilities for native communities robbed of their lands and timber. Boyce Anyie from Mulu, a region ravaged by concessions handed to the Taib family, says promised projects from the last election have still not been fulfilled, including a RM300 million promised upgrade of the logging roads used by Samling to take their timber. Instead of being converted to serve the communities as promised the roads are now fallen into disrepair with bridges collapsed. As for promised micro-hydro electric power from the last election cycle? Nothing. Not even clean water has been provided. Also, sick people from Limbang have to travel through Brunei to get to their hospital, but many are too poor to afford the tolls, why have their powerful YBs failed to solve this issue? On the show today: 'Controlled Release?' Residents of the area beneath Bakun Dam, where around half of Sarawak's native populations live, have been notified that owing to dangerously high water levels in the Dam the operators will begin a 'controlled release' of water starting IMMEDIATELY for the next MONTH. Anyone navigating the river is warned of the danger of the artificially high waters, but what of those not yet warned? What of the native people whose fields and roads and buildings are routinely flooded, crops destroyed and fishing made unavailable by these sudden and unpredicted artificial surges? We speak to the communities who say SEB have never compensated them for their losses or provided roads to withstand the deluges. Nor do these communities downstream of the 2nd largest hydropower installation in the world yet have electricity from the dam - they are still forced to depend on diesel generators despite having been forced from their lands to make way for the dam (whose safety issues remain glaring and unresolved). Also, we speak to the 'Let's Eat' activist who helps many of the displaced native poor obtain food in Miri City and we take a tour of Dayak Cultural Classes and Art.......
