  *Samling's Attempt to Silence Save Rivers through Accusations*
  Today's trial involving Samling Company has been postponed for the fourth time, with plans to resume in September. Two of the delays were due to the judge's involvement in other criminal cases, while the other delay was a result of Samling claiming insufficient evidence and requesting additional documents.

  Simon Siah said that, Samling Company asserts that the accusations against Save Rivers are unfounded. They claim that they sell timber after logging to foreign markets and assert that they obtained consent from local communities during the logging process. However, the reality is that the logging operation took place in March 2020, during the outbreak of the pandemic, and Samling did not consult the affected communities or obtain their consent.

  During that period, the communities in the interior Baram were unaware of the events unfolding and did not approve of Samling's intrusion and logging activities. Save Rivers and The Gerenai Community Rights Action Committee (GCRAC) sent letters to Samling requesting an explanation, but Samling did not respond. Instead, they suggested that these NGOs inquire with the Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC), which also failed to provide a formal response. As a result, Save Rivers sent a letter accusing Samling of encroaching upon customary lands in the interior Baram. However, Samling denies these allegations.

  He said that Samling Company has filed a lawsuit against Save Rivers and its board members, alleging that their intention is to silence individuals like Peter Kallang. This is known as a "SLAPP" (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation). We want to make it clear that we will respond to this accusation through our defense.
  Samling is suing SAVE Rivers for allegedly defamatory statements with regards to consultations of local communities in the context of the certification process under the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme MTCS, endorsed by PEFC International. Samling is seeking an apology, an injunction stopping SAVE Rivers from reporting community claims, and damages in the sum of 5 million ringgit or 1.1 million US-Dollar — approximately 45 times SAVE Rivers’ annual budget.

  *Penan Village Set Blockade in Ba Data Bila to Protest Samling’s Logging Activities*

  Nick informed that the Penan in Ba Data Bila (ulu Baram) have set up a Blockade in Simpang entering the village of Ba Data Bila on May 9, 2023, to prevent the Samling Logging Company from logging in their village land area. Samling Company appointed a contractor to carry out the logging works involved. But a day later after the barrier was erected. A group of residents of Kampung Ba Data Bila who support logging came and demolished the barriers involved. There was an argument and finally the party that set up the blockade gave in and their barrier was demolished. Residents object to logging because their village area (Ba Data Bila) is located within the UBFA Area and it has been agreed by the Sarawak Forest Department and ITTO that the area cannot have logging activities.

  According to information from residents, the party that came to demolish the barrier came in a drunken state. They were promised a car and were given several tens of thousands in cash. They argued that the company that entered their village was only to build roads - for a period of 20 years. For Nick and the rest of the penan residents. These are all tricks to deceive and seize their land and forests. Nick is saddened by the promises of money and bonuses by the logging company. Penan people fight with each other.

  Rosli from Kampung Usaha Jaya Tukau Miri

  *Eviction Threat and Dispute Over Land Ownership in Kampung Usaha Jaya Tukau*

  Rosli was the first person, along with his father-in-law, to explore the land in the village in 1986. As a result, they were granted the status of a Traditional Village, Usaha Jaya Tukau Miri, by Adenan Satem when Tok Nan was the Chief Minister of Sarawak.

  Consequently, the village received a government project from the Sarawak government, providing 24-hour electricity and clean water supply to the entire village. When KM Sarawak Tok Nan endorsed the village, the area was surveyed by the Department of Land and Survey to confirm the existence of the village.

  Parabena obtained a Provisional Lease (PL) from the Sarawak government in 2011. This came as a surprise to the entire village when they received eviction notices from the lawyer's office, instructing them to vacate Lot 188 Zone C by May 29, 2023. There was no dialogue between the villagers and Parabena, except for a meeting attended by 11 individuals who did not inform the villagers of the purpose of the meeting.

  The case started when Hj Haslan encroached on Parabena's Lot 187, leading to a lawsuit filed against him by the development company. However, due to Hj Haslan's dissatisfaction, he wants to claim compensation for his oil palm plantation using the names of the villagers from Zone C Lot 188. Many villagers are unhappy with Hj Haslan's actions, dragging the villagers of Usaha Jaya Tukau Miri into a fight, even though originally Lot 188 had no connection to the issue with Lot 187. Hj Haslan's behavior has sparked tensions, seemingly motivated by personal gain in seeking compensation if he succeeds in involving the villagers of Usaha Jaya Tukau Miri.

  Mr. Rosli, a former Special Branch (SB) police officer, knows that Hj Haslan's actions are wrong. As of today, the villagers will not comply with the eviction notice they received.

  *Calls for Action as 125 Police Misconduct Cases Remain Unresolved*
  The Ministry of Home Affairs will investigate reports of 125 misconduct cases involving members of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) that have not been addressed, as revealed by the MACC last week.

  Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stated that although the number is relatively small compared to the 122,000 police personnel nationwide, it needs to be promptly addressed.

  Arul from PSM commented on the issue, stating that complaints against the police have consistently been the highest compared to other institutions such as customs, immigration, and others. This was the reason behind the establishment of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) during Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's tenure, as a monitoring body. However, it appears that the PDRM has not taken any action on these complaints, leading to public concerns about who should be responsible for conducting investigations. In this case, there are two government institutions involved, and it is evident that the MACC is disappointed by the lack of response from the PDRM.

  Initially, it was believed that an institution cannot effectively investigate itself, except for minor disciplinary matters. However, in more significant cases, the MACC possesses independent investigative powers. Currently, there is no information available regarding any cases where decisive actions have been taken by the authorities. The implementation of the IPCMC, which was requested by civil society groups, has not been carried out.

  *Samling's Path to FSC Certification Hindered by Complaints from Local Communities Regarding Lack of Consultation*
  Pertaining to Samling's sustainable certification, it is important to note that Samling holds logging licenses from the Sarawak government.

  There are two types of licenses granted to Samling. The first type is issued by the state government, allowing Samling to log trees in various locations. The second type is the sustainable certificate required for exporting timber to other countries.

  Samling has been operating under the Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC), which is not recognized in other countries. International buyers typically prefer timber from companies with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification.

    Samling is currently seeking FSC certification.

  However, concerns have been raised by local communities regarding a lack of consultation during a research study conducted by certain individuals. Furthermore, the consultations were held with individuals who are not from the affected communities. These actions are considered violations according to FSC regulations. As a result, Samling's application for FSC certification is still pending, and ongoing investigations are being conducted into the complaints raised by the communities of Long Moh, Sian, and Ba Adang.

  *Villagers Forced to Leave Homes as Land Dispute with Parabena Sdn. Bhd. Ends in Favor of Developer*

  More than 600 residents of Kamung Usahajaya Tukau received a notice from Syarikat Parabena Sdn. Bhd. to move and vacate their homes before May 29, 2023. The land of the village site was handed over by the state government to Syarikat Parabena in 2009. Haji Haslan wondered how the state government was willing to give the land of the village site to the housing development company when the villagers needed the land more for living and engaging in agricultural and economic activities. Haji Haslan also wondered how the company had more rights to the land, considering that the ownership letter was only issued in 2009, while the residents of Kampung Usahajaya had been living there since the Japanese occupation, which was 60 years ago. Many projects have been given to the villagers over the years by the government GPS. However, in the end, the residents were ordered to move. Haji Haslan appealed to YB and the state government to provide them with housing sites and compensate the residents. Does the government want to see us living like refugees?" asked Haji Haslan.

  The case of the residents of Kampung Usahajaya VS Parabena has gone through the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Federal Court. In the end, the villagers lost.

  *GPS plan to achieve full electric power by the year 2025, is the promise just a joke?*
  shared his views on the statement made by SEB Chairman, Datuk Amar Hamed Sepawi, regarding Sarawak's plan to achieve full electric power by the year 2025.

  However, the question here is that such statements seem like a mere show, as when the time comes, the interior areas of Sarawak still do not have full access to electricity. Does Hamed Sepawi's statement also include solar power?

  During Nicholas Bawin's time as a PKR candidate in Lubok Antu, he observed that there are still several villages without electricity despite hydro cables passing through their settlements. For example, in Batang Ai, electricity is sold to Indonesia, which is highly disappointing as the local population is left in the dark.

  At one point in the, when Nicholas Bawin attended a seminar, the Sarawak government expressed its intention to build 52 large or small hydroelectric plants in Sarawak. However, existing dams such as Batang Ai, Bakun, and Murum are already sufficient. With Indonesia relocating its capital to Kalimantan, is electricity also being generated from Sarawak?

  *Public Urged to Report Hadi's Extremist Remarks to the Police*

  PAS has recently announced its opposition to the British band Coldplay holding a concert in Malaysia. This is not the first time PAS has opposed a concert; they have previously opposed the performances of the Korean group BLACKPINK as well. Furthermore, a local preacher openly expressed dissatisfaction with BLACKPINK during their concert, which coincided with severe floods in Malaysia, and even went so far as to "pray" for the concert to be affected by floods.

  Such behavior is irrational. Nevertheless, the Malay community remains enthusiastic in their support for BLACKPINK. They understand that concerts are about entertainment, not religious issues.

  Including Anwar Ibrahim, have also shown support for Coldplay.  

  Many believe that Hadi Awang should have been investigated by the police long ago due to his long-standing racially extremist statements, which have caused resentment among the youth. DAP's Lim Guan Eng has also called on the public to report any extreme remarks made by Hadi to the authorities.

  It is believed that PAS's actions are aimed at gaining recognition from like-minded individuals, but are they really in the minority?

  Lee Chean Chung has questioned the actions of Tun M and Faizai Azumu, Deputy President of Parti Pribumi Bersatu PPBM. Both individuals have challenged PMX Anwar Ibrahim to declare his wealth. Lee expressed his concern about those who have not declared their own assets forcing others who have done so. He highlighted that all leaders in the People's Justice Party (PH) have declared their assets before nominating candidates for elections, and even after assuming positions in the government, PH leaders are required to declare their assets. Lee called for Parti Pribumi Bersatu PPBM to follow suit and declare their assets. He criticized the opposition party for their lack of transparency in this matter and accused them of using propaganda to discredit the leadership of PH and Anwar Ibrahim. Lee deemed this behavior inappropriate, shameful, and irresponsible.

  *The Coldplay Concert: A Nonsensical Tool for PAS to Incite People*
  Just a day after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim welcomed Coldplay with a tweet, a PAS leader is calling for the British rock band’s concert to be cancelled. PAS central committee member Nasrudin Hassan posted yesterday on Facebook: “Does the government want to nurture a culture of hedonism and perversion in this country?”

  Oscar Ling comment that, the demand from PAS is excessive. They continuously manipulate racial and religious issues, and we need to respect every religion and race.

  Regarding the concert, Oscar Ling believe it should not be opposed. The reasons mentioned by PAS are likely driven by the upcoming state elections, where they use such issues to threaten the position of the federal government.

  Hadi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Marang, claimed in a Facebook post that Malays are being openly deceived because non-Muslims and non-Malays are the "big robbers". In fact, back in August, Hadi also alleged that non-Muslims and non-Bumiputeras were the cause of corruption and were the majority involved in damaging the politics and economy of the country.

  Hadi's statements actually violate the sedition laws. In reality, Malays or Muslims are the majority, so if anyone should feel threatened, it shouldn't be the Muslims as claimed by Hadi. Instead, shouldn't the indigenous people of East Malaysia be more concerned about being marginalized?

  Additional : How can power be lost when all important positions in this country are held by Malays and Muslims? Even in the Cabinet, out of the 28 members, only nine ministers are non-Muslims. Furthermore, out of the 148 government parliament members, 77 of them are Muslims, which is more than the 72 members from Perikatan Nasional. Therefore the President of DAP Lim Guan Eng called on the Malaysian people to jointly file police reports against Hadi to put an end to divisive and racially-driven politics and to safeguard national unity and integration.

  * Roundtable Discussion Explores Feasibility of Unity Government and Hung Parliament in Malaysia *

  Deepening Democracy in Malaysia: Making Coalition Government and Hung Parliament Work, held on 9-10 May, was organized in collaboration with Kofi Annan's foundation, Global Bersih, and Bersih Malaysia, with full support from the Department of the Speaker of the House.
  The focus of the discussion was on whether a unity government and the concept of a "Hung Parliament" can be successful in Malaysia, considering the current situation after the 15th General Election where no single party has a simple majority to form the federal government.
  The Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition has expressed their intention to overthrow the unity government. To shed light on the topic, Bersih invited experts from democratic countries such as Finland, Germany, Australia, Canada, and the Philippines to share insights on how their political systems operate with discipline and stability. The forum included local panels, politicians, academia experts, who offered suggestions for the country. Approximately 200 participants, including Members of Parliament, senators, NGOs, and youths, attended the event. One particularly interesting topic discussed was the utilization of constructive votes of no confidence in the German parliament.

  *Strongly Opposes Extension of Ta Ann Group's Logging License*

  I agree with the extension of the Ta Ann Group's logging license for up to 1000 years, as long as it benefits the people of Sarawak and the Orang Asal. However, I have concerns about the current situation. Dennis Along, for example, has pointed out that despite Ta Ann's logging activities in the area, the local people remain poor and lack basic facilities.

  Dennis suggests that Ta Ann and Hamed Sepawi, who was appointed as an economic advisor to the Prime Minister by the Anwar Ibrahim administration, should follow the example set by PMX and implement the Madani practice. This practice aims to provide justice and economic prosperity to the local community.

  Dennis believes that Ta Ann, through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, should be able to construct essential facilities for the residents in the areas where they conduct logging operations. Additionally, Dennis questions how Ta Ann managed to obtain various approvals and certifications when the majority of local residents oppose the logging activities.

  In conclusion, Dennis strongly objects to the extension of Ta Ann Group's logging license, citing the need for greater consideration of the well-being and interests of the local community.

  Mr. Ah Pek from Niah
  *Voices of Smallholders: Exposing Weighing Fraud in the Oil Palm Industry*
  Mr. Ah Pek from Niah, a small oil palm farmer, does not deny the existence of weighing fraud committed by middlemen, which has caused significant losses for smallholders. Ah Pek is well aware of the discrepancies in weighing conducted by the purchasing middlemen, resulting in fraudulent practices of up to 100kg per ton.

  For smallholders who do not have their own transportation to deliver the palm fruit, they are forced to pay transportation fees of around RM70-80 per ton, along with the same amount for labor costs. This means that they receive less than RM670 per ton after deducting the transportation and labor fees. Additionally, if the road conditions are poor, they have to bear an additional RM100 per ton for transportation.

  However, due to the distance of the palm processing mills, smallholders have no choice but to sell their produce to the middlemen, despite being aware of their fraudulent weighing practices. Mr. Ah Pek hopes that the GPS government takes this issue seriously and protects the rights of smallholders.

  *Slow Progress of Hospital Project in Sarawak's Mukah Division*
  Deputy Health Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni has expressed his concerns regarding the negative implications on both the people and various projects caused by the prolonged delay of several "sick" projects, particularly in the healthcare sector, within the Mukah Division. Urgent action is required to address these issues and safeguard the overall well-being of the local population.

  Abdul Jalil from PKR Mukah commented, "The progress of this hospital project has been delayed for a long time, with no visible signs of advancement."
  During a recent visit to Sarawak, Health Minister Dr. Zaliha Mustafa held a meeting with Sarawak PKR, during which Abdul Jalil raised concerns about the slow progress of the hospital project. He also highlighted the challenges faced by the people of Mukah, including the lack of a major hospital for the treatment of serious illnesses, forcing them to travel to other cities for medical care.

  The pressing issues in Mukah include the immediate need for essential medical equipment at Mukah Hospital, as it directly impacts the accessibility of healthcare services for the local population. The deputy minister's call for urgent action reflects the importance of prioritizing these projects and ensuring the timely completion of healthcare infrastructure to meet the needs of the community.

  Today, Borneo Post reported that TA ANN Holding has received a 30-year lease renewal. Hamed Sepawi, the Executive Chairman of TA ANN, stated that this renewal signifies significant recognition of our efforts in sustainable forest management. TA ANN manages the logging areas of FMU Song-Kapit, FMU Pasin, and FMU Raplex. All three logging areas have obtained forest management certification under the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS), accredited by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

  John said, "This confirms what I said yesterday, that Sarawak is ruled by crony capitalism. Hamed Sepawi is the cousin of TYT Taib Mahmud. He is a proxy for Taib Mahmud. He is the Treasurer-General of PBB/GPS and also the CEO of SEB. He is also the Executive Chairman of TA ANN Holding. This explains how the leaders of PBB Sarawak control the politics and economy of Sarawak. I want to ask, what benefits have the locals in Kapit and Song gained from the logging activities of TA ANN? Song is among the poorest districts in Malaysia. Has the company contributed to CSR projects such as building schools, roads, providing clean water, or supplying free electricity? After earning millions in profits from logging for decades?" "

  John hope the voters realize that although Sarawak shows economic growth and results, it is being plundered by political rulers and wealthy tycoons who will continue to control Sarawak's economy even after their deaths. Their cronies will carry on the same practices.

  John explained that his PBDS party leadership will collaborate with PH in the upcoming state elections, and he hopes the people of Sarawak realize that PBB and GPS are not the right choices.

  *The Opposition's Focus on EPF: Stirring Emotions or Addressing People's Concerns*
  Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expects the issue of Employees Provident Fund (EPF) withdrawals to continue to be politicised in the campaign for the upcoming six state elections. He said that he is ready to tackle the matter to ensure that the EPF does not run away from its fundamental function of providing an employee with retirement savings.
  Lee Chean Chung expressed that it seems like the opposition party has no other issues to challenge the coalition government and can only repeat the topic of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) in an attempt to stir up people's emotions. He mentioned that the unconditional withdrawal of EPF funds was allowed during the period of the pandemic when people faced difficulties in their lives and economy. However, now that the situation has improved and the economy is recovering, the Prime Minister has firmly stated that people will no longer be allowed to withdraw EPF funds unconditionally. Nevertheless, individuals can still withdraw funds from their EPF accounts based on existing regulations, such as for the purpose of purchasing a house, furthering education, or other specified options. They can also apply for EPF loans according to the established criteria, which are all permissible. Li believes that the opposition party should raise challenges on other policy issues that benefit the people, rather than inciting people's emotions through topics related to race, religion, and so on.

  *Orang Asli in Johor Protest Proposed Conversion of Reserve Land*

  A group of Orang Asli in Johor gathered yesterdaymorning to protest against the proposed conversion of their reserve land in the state into "sultanate land." According to Sinar Harian, over 200 Orang Asli gathered in front of the Johor Chief Minister's office in Kota Iskandar at 10 a.m. to peacefully voice their objections and submit a memorandum regarding the matter.

  The community is concerned that they may be classified as "squatters" on the land, making them vulnerable to eviction at any time. They said that the protest is not personal, but rather about defending our rights. We are still comfortable with the old system where Orang Asli land is placed under the regular reserve system, governed by Act 134 and the National Land Code.

  During the event yesterday, Linda, along with 200 Orang Asli from Johor, submitted a memorandum to the Menteri Besar at Kota Iskandar. However, the Menteri Besar refused to come out, and instead, the State Secretary received the memorandum on their behalf. The memorandum aimed to protest against the proposed conversion of Orang Asli's reserved land to Sultanate land, in order to prevent manipulation of the Orang Asli by certain individuals.

  The Orang Asli from Johor wish to manage their own land in the same way their ancestors managed their ancestral land. They are content with their traditional way of life in the Orang Asli community. They have also made plans to meet with the Prime Minister in the near future. The rally was peaceful, and the police were very cooperative.

  Roderick Wong Siew Lead has urged relevant parties to address the issue of damaged road at Jalan Kim San junction in Sarikei caused by the construction work of the Pan Borneo Highway. He said, despite having reported the issue to the authorities, there had been no further action so far. He stated that damaged roads pose a danger to road users' lives. He stressed that although the Pan Borneo Highway construction work is ongoing, the authorities must always ensure that the temporary road does not endanger road users and safety must be prioritised.

  The Economist magazine in 2023 ranked Malaysia in third place, behind Russia and the Czech Republic, in the Crony Capitalism Index. This indicates the extent of cronyism practices in Malaysia. According to John Brian, all of this stems from political power. Politics is used as a means to become wealthy. Let's take the example of a retired teacher who was poor but became rich shortly after winning the election representing the BN. It all starts when election candidates representing BN are funded by wealthy capitalists for their campaigns. When these sponsored politicians win in the elections, it becomes their obligation to repay the money that was used during the campaign. They do this by awarding contracts and projects worth millions to these capitalists.

  According to John, in Sarawak, it is not a secret that companies like Samling, Shin Yang, Rimbunan Hijau, Ta Ann, WTK, and KTS have funded the election campaigns of BN candidates in the past. As a result, the wealth of Sarawak is plundered by a group of wealthy capitalists. It is truly unfortunate for Malaysia that 6% of the population monopolizes the country's wealth. The administration of Anwar Ibrahim began to break the monopoly on rice, sugar, diesel/petrol in a short period of time. Only by changing the government can this practice be eradicated, says John Brian.

  *Vote Against Capitalist Pawns: Empowering the People*
  Nicholas explained that the practice of Crony Capitalism has hindered the country's development progress. Many projects and contracts are awarded to individuals who lack qualifications, solely based on their connections with politicians and influential figures. As a result, some projects were not implemented, some faced delays and cost overruns, and others were completed but with subpar quality. Additionally, there were cases of misappropriation of project funds and contracts. This crony-capitalism culture thrived during the BN government's rule for decades. According to Nicholas, there are two necessary steps to counter the influence of crony capitalism. Firstly, the government and politicians must firmly reject manipulation by capitalists, and secondly, the people should remove any politician who becomes a pawn for capitalists through their votes in elections. Nicholas is confident that if given the opportunity to govern Malaysia, PMX will succeed in achieving these goals.

  *Equal Recognition: Advocating Public Holidays for Keamatan and Gawai Festivals*

  The 8 NGOs have come together to discuss the Keamatan celebration on the 30th and 31st of May for the natives of Sabah, while the Gawai festival for the Dayaks in Sarawak takes place on the 1st and 2nd of June. However, these festivities have not been officially recognized as public holidays in Malaysia. Currently, there is only a one-day holiday for Gawai. Considering that Sabah and Sarawak are integral parts of Malaysia, it would be beneficial for the federal government to declare public holidays for Keamatan and the Gawai festival. Malaysia already have public holidays for Hari Raya and Chinese New Year, and as Malaysians who are of diverse backgrounds, it is important that we are treated equally.

  *Equal Celebration: Recognizing Gawai and Keamatan as National Public Holidays*
  Ms. Florence residing in Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam, welcomes the proposal by Sarawak NGOs to request recognition from PMX for public holidays during the Gawai festival and Sabah's Keamatan celebration at the national level. She expresses that during the Gawai festival, Sarawakians who are unable to return to Sarawak feel that the federal level does not pay sufficient attention to the sentiments of diverse communities and celebrations from Sabah and Sarawak, which occur from the 30th of May to the 2nd of June each year. Since living in Peninsular Malaysia since 1998, Ms. Florence and her family face exorbitant costs, reaching up to RM 3,000, to travel back to Sarawak. Consequently, during the festive season, their children continue schooling as usual in Peninsular Malaysia. Ms. Florence wonders why Hari Gawai and Keamatan are not celebrated throughout Malaysia, whereas Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, and Christmas are embraced nationwide. Does the Dayak celebration hold such little significance? Ms. Florence hopes that the proposal by Sarawak NGOs will be implemented for the sake of a diverse and inclusive Malaysia

  The issue of rising cost of living in Peninsular Malaysia is still a topic of concern among the people. With the heavy economic burden that remains unresolved, Ms. Florence hopes that the Pakatan Harapan government can promptly address the people's problems and regain their trust.

  *Controversy Surrounding Larry Sng's Appointment as Chairman of Malaysian Timber Industry Board*
  Dennis objected to the appointment of Larry Sng as the Chairman of the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB). Larry, who is a Member of Parliament for Julau and the President of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party, was appointed to the position by Deputy Prime Minister Fadilah Yusuf, who oversees the portfolio of the Ministry of Primary Industries.

  Dennis asserted that Larry was not qualified for the position because he has never been at the forefront of opposing illegal logging or defending the rights of indigenous people to the forest. Instead, activists such as Peter Kalang or Dr. Ellie Luhat should be appointed to the position because they have proven expertise and understanding of sustainable environmental conservation.

  Larry is also not a principled leader. After Pakatan Harapan fell in 2018, he left the People's Justice Party and now infiltrated the PMX administration through an appointment by GPS. If Larry had stayed principled in PKR, he would likely have been a minister by now, said Dennis, not appealing for a position like the Chairman of MTIB.

  Protecting Children During the Pandemic

  Malaysia’s health ministry is mulling the implementation of a mask mandate in schools amid a rise in COVID-19 cases. According to the latest data from the health ministry, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose by 30.4 per cent in the 14 days leading up to Apr 22. The health ministry also recorded 14,161 active cases as of that date.

  Dr. Malina comment that, in the current situation, the majority of people have been vaccinated against the pandemic, making a significant difference compared to the period between 2020 and 2022. However, the severity of the outbreak still depends on the location and population affected.

  Therefore, the education department recommends that children continue to wear masks. For families who cannot afford the cost of masks and other protective equipment, the government can provide subsidies to assist them.

  Moreover, it is still advisable to wear masks in crowded places, especially for families with children, as it can protect them from getting infected since their immune systems may be more fragile than adults.

  In hot weather conditions, it is recommended to drink more water, consume fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins, and stay indoors as much as possible to avoid going outside.

  *Heavy Machinery Remains at Disused Mines in Tasik Chini for Over Two Years*
  It has been two years since the Pahang royal household decreed the cessation of mining activities in the second-largest natural lake in Peninsular Malaysia due to environmental concerns. However, as of the time of writing, valuable heavy machinery such as excavators and dump trailers are still parked in the former mines, causing unease among the Orang Asli community living in the vicinity. These villagers depend heavily on the natural lake for their income, such as fishing and tourism.

  In 2000, Bob Manolan visited the area and spoke to the community. At that time, most rivers were already polluted due to mining operations. He was told that while all mining licenses have been ceased for operation, some licenses are still valid. Villagers have also informed him that heavy machinery is still parked in the area, causing worry not only among the local communities but also among tourists and environmentalists.

  Bob hopes that the owners of the heavy machinery will remove their machines from the area. He also plans to visit the site before the next parliamentary sitting and bring up the issue.

  - Five officers attached to Human Resource Minister V Sivakumar had their services terminated with immediate effect, according to sources from the Prime Minister's Department.  The move was part of the government's efforts to clean up the Human Resources Ministry after recent allegations of corruption and abuse of power linked to Sivakumar's officers.

  *Unresolved foreign worker problem in Malaysia may affect corruption perception and migrant labor reputation*

  The Malaysian government announced the approval of 500,000 foreign workers' entry into Malaysia in January. However, problems arise when these foreign workers are not provided with work upon arrival, leading to their dumping in temporary detention depots. These foreign workers have to pay between RM 10,000 to RM 25,000 to agents to enter Malaysia, and the employer who employs them also pays almost the same amount to the agent.

  Despite this, the problem of placing workers still persists. Pereira pointed out that every time the approval for foreign workers to work in Malaysia is opened, dozens of millionaires are born immediately. This is the main problem that needs to be investigated and resolved by the Malaysian government. Pereira also emphasized that if employers and workers work together, they can defeat agents who take advantage of foreign workers entering Malaysia. Furthermore, it should be noted that suppressing the wages of foreign workers also suppresses and affects the wages of local workers.

  Pereira explained that in 2018, during the PH administration, a committee was established to investigate and find a solution to this problem. However, until now, the results of the investigation and findings of this committee have not been presented. If the problem of foreign workers in Malaysia remains unresolved, Malaysia's position in the corruption perception index, human trafficking, and migrant labor will continue to be questioned at the international level. Andrian urged the PMX administration to solve this problem as soon as possible and prosecute those involved in corruption and abuse of power in court.

  *10 written questions for DUN sitting give Abang Jo advance notice to prepare answers*

  Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen has submitted 10 written questions for the upcoming State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting that will be held from May 15 until May 24.

  Chong Chieng Jen's special assistant, Michael Kong, said that one is about Sarawak's developments and economic growth. Also, there are questions on the average income of Sarawakians and what the state should do to increase it. Besides that, Chong also has some questions on strategies for Sarawak to increase the usage of EVs (electric vehicles), as Sarawak is a state that supplies a lot of electricity.  Apart from that, Kong said Chong is also querying the Premier on the total costs for the construction of the proposed 600 telecommunication towers announced in 2019 and how many of these towers have yet to be rented by telecommunication companies for the installation of their transmitters.  

  Michael Kong commented that as usual, the GPS government is not going to answer all those questions. But since they raised the questions earlier, they have time to answer, or answer in the next DUN sitting, which is in December.

  *Communities Worried About Possible Further Delays to Marudi Bridge Project

  Mr. Robinson frequently travels between Marudi and Miri to inform people that the Marudi bridge project is under construction. However, the progress of the project seems to be slow, and nobody knows when it will be completed. The Marudi bridge project is very important for the people of Marudi, who currently rely solely on the ferry service.

  Mr. Robinson became worried when a friend, who is an excavator operator, told him that he would be moved to another project. Therefore, Mr. Robinson thinks that there may be some problems with the Marudi bridge project, and it may be delayed again.  

  However, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas stated two days ago that the Marudi bridge project across Baram River is making good progress, with a two percent increase ahead of schedule from its previous 'sick project' status. The contractor, Pekerjaan Piasau Konkerit Senderian Berhad, has committed to completing the RM116.5 million project within two years. The 650-meter long two-lane single carriageway bridge is expected to be completed by October 2025.

  Malaysia’s 73rd ranking on Reporters Without Borders’ (RSF) World Press Freedom Index 2023 is a positive development which emphasises the commitment of the government in its assurance of press freedom, said Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

  Veteran journalist Mr Bennett Bunyau stated that freedom of the media has its pros and cons. The good thing about it is that it provides space for media practitioners to speak up without fear, unlike during the era of the Internal Security Act. Only with this freedom of the media, people are more aware of human rights issues and can object to what they feel uncomfortable with the government's administration.
  Mr Bennett was once expelled from a district for writing an article about NCR issues in a newspaper company, and he often received arrest threats for publishing articles about NCR issues. However, this kind of thing no longer happens recently, and Mr Bennett Bunyau is also actively selling a book about NCR written in English at the Gawai Bazaar in Miri.

  What are the drawbacks of media freedom?

   Mr Bennett Bunyau said that the downside of media freedom is that it can be misused by religious extremists to pursue their religious agendas, as we have seen in the peninsula of Malaysia, where religious extremists have used media freedom to play on their religious sentiments.

Kus hopes that local workers will be trained and absorbed as permanent employees after the completion of mega-projects, which will improve the skills and socio-economic conditions of the people in Sarawak.

  Rumors are circulating that the government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will fall in the near future. This matter was further fueled by a Facebook post from Muhamad Faiz, a member of the PPBM party's Supreme Leadership Council, who claimed that PN already has the support of 126 members of parliament.

  According to Iswardy, the possibility of changing the government through SD support is no longer valid after the anti-party jumping act came into force. But if it is true that PN/PPBM has more support than the majority, there is only one way to change the government, which is to bring a vote of confidence or a vote of no confidence in parliament. This is the only way allowed by the constitution, and the King is bound by the constitutional amendment after the party hopping act is passed and enforced by parliament.

  When asked about the worst scenario Anwar might face after the elections in six states, Iswardy stated that even if the worst scenario happens and all six states fall into the hands of the opposition, the federal government will still remain in place. The possibility of UMNO changing its stance in support of PN is also unlikely because UMNO and PN+PAS both draw support from Malays and Muslims, while PH and PKR have widespread support from all races and religions. UMNO will likely choose PH and use the next four years to strengthen the party before GE16.

  Commenting on Hadi Awang's meeting with Tun Mahathir to sign the Proclamation of the Malays, Iswardy confirmed that PAS is a party that sells religious and racial products. Hadi hopes that by doing so, his party will gain strong support from Muslim Malays. Hadi affirmed his support for the proclamation in accordance with the principles of Islamic struggle. However, Iswardy believes that Hadi is wrong because the Prophet Muhammad's struggle crossed racial boundaries. Iswardy thinks that the concept of Madani Malaysia is encouraging and that Malaysians as a whole are accepting it. It remains to be seen whether Hadi's innate race and religion narrative or Madani Malaysia will be more popular in the six states that will face elections in a few months.

  It is justified to have matters related to carbon under the administration of the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities, in view of the United Nations (UN)’s recognition of it as being a ‘commodity’. In pointing this out, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg opined that carbon should be seen as a commodity in view of Malaysia’s robust carbon market.

  Barnie Lasimbang said that, Abang Jo is emphasizing whether carbon is a commodity or whether it must be under the administration of the energy sector. However, the main issue here is that carbon is actually a platform that has emerged due to the need to control climate change.
  Therefore, the UN program or plan proposed under the UN framework for climate change mitigation aims to make use of carbon.
  This sudden value of carbon is the reason why everyone is struggling to control this new resource. He believes that using carbon as a means of climate change mitigation is entirely wrong if carbon emissions persist.
  This is because it will also affect human livelihood, and we can see that it will not reduce forest degradation.

  Therefore, that is why they want carbon to be classified as a natural resource.

  In the context of Sarawak, climate change is a regulation or platform where Malaysia is a signatory to the convention, not Sarawak. It means that the jurisdiction related to climate is under federal authority.

  *The Pardon to Najib is contrary to the principle of the rule of law*

  Muda has expressed its position that the Pardon Board should reject any pardon applications submitted for former Prime Minister Najib Razak

  As one of the Muda Central Executive Committee, Jeffery said the party would oppose any attempt towards granting pardon to Najib. The Committee described Najib as a "kleptocrat" who has brought hardship to the country, and a pardon for him would send the wrong message to the Malaysian people.

  Jeffrery ask, will ordinary citizens who have been found guilty of the same crime also be given this privilege? A pardon for Najib while he is still serving his sentence would send a message that any influential individual with power and connections need not worry about the law. This is contrary to the principle of the rule of law.

  Najib is currently serving a 12-year jail sentence after being found guilty of charges involving criminal breach of trust, money laundering and abuse of power related to RM42 million of SRC International funds.

   UMNO, which is now a key party in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's administration, has filed a petition for a pardon for Najib.

  SUARAM Executive Director- Sevan Doraisamy thinks Anwar Ibrahim will be the worst prime minister in Malaysian history if he fails to fulfill his reform promises. Doraisami questioned Anwar's political determination. According to Doraisami, it is not yet on the list of laws to be amended by the government; Security Offenses Act (Special Measures), Crime Prevention Act, Terrorism Prevention Act, Dangerous Drugs Act which still have clauses of detaining suspects for a long period of time without having to prosecute them in Court. Sim asks SUARAM to be rational and give Anwar some time. In these 5 months, Anwar has done many reforms and there will be more in the future. Among them, according to Sim - Parliament Reform - there is a special question and answer session with the Prime Minister (PMT). Abolish the mandatory death penalty in drug cases and establish a special Parliamentary select committee that has full power to summon anyone to testify. Add YB Sim- most importantly, a Law Reform Committee has been established, which is examining outdated laws that need to be amended. According to YB Sim- despite leading the Unity government, there is nothing stopping Anwar from reforming his administration. According to Sim, Anwar carried out reforms in his administration faster than all previous prime ministers, besides Anwar is the prime minister who listens to the voice and welfare of the people the most. The question is not how quickly outdated laws are amended. But an amendment should be neat, orderly and precise.

In the index, Malaysia's position improved to 113 with 51.55 points compared to the previous year's position of 119 (60.53 points). Journalist Chris Lau agrees with YB Fahmi's statement on media freedom. This is because since the first time the PH government came into power in 2018, media freedom has been increasingly allowed to cover both the government and the opposition.   Currently, he has around 100 applicants statewide who have been forwarded to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for further action. In June, the ministry is expected to make some decisions. At the moment, they are still collecting more documents. Some have birth certificates but are having citizenship or permanent residency issues, while some are still in the process of finalization. Others have no personal documents at all. According to his records, most applicants are from the Bintulu-Miri area and other areas. Some have called in but have yet to provide copies of their documents. He is also following up on previous applicants whose applications are still in progress. By the end of this month, he will follow up on whatever he had submitted to the ministry. He will bring up the issue of traditional marriage registration in longhouses to be made acceptable for easy marriage registration for people living in the interior in the upcoming Dewan Negara sitting. This is because many rural couples cannot register their newborn children as they do not have legal marriage certificates.
