  *Penan urges the GPS Gov to withdraw the MTCC certificate (FMU) and the Samling Logging license simultaneously*

  Nick Kelesau praised MTCC's action in withdrawing one of the Samling certificates for the Ravenscourt Forest Management Unit (FMU) in Sarawak. This was done after Samling failed to prove corrective action through a previous audit. According to Nick all this time Penan made a blockade to protest the logging done by Samling. This is real proof that Penan does not want logging. We also demand that the government cancel the logging license given to Samling in our area (Ba Abang and Long Pakan). Since Samling logged in our area, our forest has been badly damaged. Our forest reserves were encroached upon, our food supply was affected and even worse, the good relations between the villagers were becoming strained. Residents can no longer pray in one church. There are villages that are arguing over the existence of two village head positions. Samling carried out a campaign to divide the villagers so that they would be easy to dominate. Nick wants all Samling logging licenses revoked and the Penan forest returned.

  *Environmental and Social Impacts: SAM's Stand Against the Kledang Saiong Forest Proposal*

  SAM urges the state government not to proceed with the proposed forest plantation project. Covering an area of 4,289 hectares within the Kledang Saiong forest reserve in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, this project raises serious concerns about the extensive habitat damage it would cause. The plan involves clearing and cutting down natural trees and replacing them with just one or two species of trees. According to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report, the surrounding area still boasts rich biodiversity, including endangered wildlife such as siamangs, tigers, and sun bears.

  Clearing all 4,289 hectares of the Kledang Saiong Forest reserve would leave these animals with nowhere else to go. Observations indicate that the area is blocked by a highway that runs through the Kledang Saiong range, preventing animals from crossing to the opposite area. In addition to the ecological concerns, the project would also lead to the loss of livelihoods for communities in the surrounding areas. It is worth noting that the project could result in pollution of the drinking water treatment plant in the vicinity, as well as the emission of carbon dioxide, an increase in heat, and a decrease in oxygen levels.

  It seems that the government has not learned from past experiences, as similar issues have arisen in Kedah. SAM strongly urges the state government to reconsider this project and prioritize the preservation of the valuable natural habitat in the Kledang Saiong forest reserve.

  *Sri Aman's Quest for Development: A Long Journey Yet to be Completed*

  When the Agong had to cancel the trip to Sri Aman, many people were deeply disappointed because all the preparations had already been made.

  Tay Wei Wei informed RFS that the true desire of the people of Sri Aman is to convey how difficult their lives are due to the lack of progress given to the people. Despite this, many longhouses still do not have access to clean water and electricity since the Sarawak government took power. The people are very thirsty for these basic amenities. Despite being part of Malaysia for 60 years since independence, the people are still far behind in terms of development.

  *Controversy Surrounding Zahid Hamidi's Release and DAP's Welcome*

  Zahid Hamidi's release, attendance at the DAP conference, and the warm welcome from DAP members mark an unprecedented event, symbolizing unity within the government. However, it has also sparked anger among some DAP supporters who are unhappy with DAP's support for politicians facing corruption allegations.

  Chris stated that Anwar Ibrahim has always emphasized the importance of combating corruption, which is a demand of the people. When the people voted for PH to form the government and elected Anwar as Prime Minister, it was with the hope that the country could rid itself of corruption and provide a brighter future for the people.

  Despite the fact that several members of parliament, including Anwar Ibrahim, have stated that they were not involved in Zahid Hamidi's release, there is still a lack of clarity regarding judicial justice.

  He pointed out that MUDA's only parliamentary seat, Muar Syed Sadiq, chose to withdraw support for the unity government, based on MUDA's principles. As for the future impact on the unity government, it remains to be seen. However, the country is in need of reform rather than reverting to a state of corruption and mismanagement.

  *Electricity Export vs. Local Needs : Unequal Access to Electricity*

  The Sarawak government's plan to sell 1000 megawatts of electricity to Singapore will not affect domestic needs, said Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi. Selling electricity to Singapore will be done through the construction of a 700 KM submarine cable. Gabril thinks that in terms of the long-term economy it is good, there is continuous income for the state and the country. But the question is, who is the government's priority GPS?. While the majority of residents downstream of the Bakun dam still do not have access to electricity, even though the Bakun dam has been generating electricity for more than 10 years. Rumah Panjang Punan Datah Ba is only 60 km away from the Bakun dam. The Sarawak government still fails to supply electricity to the population. According to Gabril, all these mega project plans were made to produce contracts worth billions of ringgit which were then given to GPS cronies. Their priority is not the people. Their priority is the GPS party and their cronies. For the record of Bakun dam 2400 MW, Murum 944 MW and Baleh 1285 MW and all 3 dams in the parliamentary area of Hulu Rajang This produces more than 4000 MW of electricity. But strangely, the people in this parliamentary area are categorized as the poorest.

  Abun Sui, Sarawak PKR Deputy Chairman Senator Abun Sui

  *Bakun Road Dangers: Urgent Calls for Safer Infrastructure in Sarawak*

  Sarawak PKR Deputy Chairman Senator Abun Sui recently survived a serious accident on the treacherous Bakun Road near Bakun Dam in central Sarawak. His pickup truck overturned after encountering potholes in a waterlogged stretch of the road. Fortunately, Abun and his fellow party members in the vehicle emerged unscathed.

  Abun had been driving cautiously at a speed of 70 km per hour when the accident occurred at KM65 of Bakun Road. This incident has highlighted the perilous conditions of Sarawak's interior roads, with similar accidents resulting in fatalities in recent times. Abun has urgently called on relevant federal and state ministries and departments to address the persistent road hazards.

  Abun emphasized the immediate need for the Public Works Department to repair the damaged sections of Bakun Road. This 200-kilometer road, connecting Bakun to Bintulu, was originally constructed in 1996 during the Bakun Dam project. Over the years, it has deteriorated, plagued by potholes, erosion, and landslides, primarily due to heavy usage by timber logging and plantation trucks.

  Before the incident happened, the Public Works Department has approved an additional allocation of RM1.5 million, increasing the total funding to RM7.5 million, for the repair and maintenance of the Simpang Bakun Road to Bakun Dam in Bintulu.

  Abun has also raised a pertinent question about the government's plan to export power to Singapore. Despite the presence of Bakun Dam nearby, he questions why there is insufficient street lighting on the roads. In comparison to well-lit highways in West Malaysia, Sarawak's roads are dangerous, marred by potholes, and pose significant risks to drivers. Abun insists that Sarawak's interior regions, where many still lack access to electricity, should be a priority. He believes that charging for electricity is reasonable, and any disconnection due to arrears should be contingent on ensuring that electricity is provided to the interior areas first.

  *The Role of Syed Saddiq: Balancing Power in the Malaysian Parliament*

  President of MUDA, Syed Saddiq, has decided that MUDA will withdraw its support for PH (Pakatan Harapan). However, Thomas believes that Syed Saddiq does not need to vacate his parliamentary seat, as he contested the election under the MUDA party and not under PH. Although there was an understanding with PH that he would support them with the condition that PH not contests in Muar, it is argued that he is not in violation of the Anti-Hopping law. In principle, every Member of Parliament must have the freedom to make decisions on issues, especially when they believe their principles are at stake.

  The disagreement arose primarily because Syed Saddiq was not in agreement with the decision to discharge but not acquit Zahid Hamidi of all his corruption charges. This was seen as a violation of PH's promise to fight against corruption and uphold the rule of law.

  Drawing a parallel to the 1MDB case during Najib Razak's tenure, where many UMNO members such as Muhyiddin and Syafie Abdal left their party, it is understood why Syed Saddiq decided to leave PH. At that time, these individuals were hailed as heroes for their principled stand.

  In this situation, Syed Saddiq plays an important role in parliament, as without his support, a Unity government would have no guarantee of securing a two-thirds majority in parliament. By including Syed Saddiq, the parliament just might have the numbers needed to support the PH government's agenda. Therefore, PH needs to negotiate with him if they want to achieve institutional reforms in parliament. This situation is not necessarily negative, and he is not violating the anti-hopping law.

  *PKR Baram's Call for Transparency and People's Rights in Sarawak*

  John attended the Baram PKR Branch Annual General Meeting (MATC) on 9/9/2023. He shared some interesting things decided by PKR Baram. Among them, PKR Baram wants to cooperate with the GPS government in Sarawak. However, from what has been observed, GPS is reluctant to accept cooperation (Unity Government) at the state level. There are complaints that there are still longhouses that have not displayed the official photo of the prime minister in their longhouses/villages. There are also government offices in Sarawak that have not/do not display the official photo of the prime minister in government offices. PKR Baram requested that the complaint be accompanied by photographic evidence for further action. Both PKR Baram will oppose GPS in the Sarawak State election in all DUN seats in the upcoming 13th Sarawak PRN, in line with the recent statement by the Premier of Sarawak which stated that there is no seat negotiation with the unity government at the state level. PKR Baram is firm in this matter because all this time PKR Baram has realized that GPS Sarawak has many weaknesses and should be changed. In conjunction with MATC this time, PKR Baram held several forums. Among them is a forum entitled People's rights to determine their respective village heads and people's rights to a clean and healthy environment. PKR Baram is upset with the action of GPS interfering in the matter of the appointment of the village head. Taking the example of some Penan villages in Baram. The Village Head is appointed by the GPS even though in the meeting in the village the majority of the residents have other options. PKR Baram believes that Orang Asal are efficient forest owners and custodians. So Baram PKR urges the government to give a carbon trading license to every longhouse that owns a large NCR land in Baram.

  *MUDA's Stand Against Corruption: The Zahid Hamidi Case and Its Consequences*

  Muar Member of Parliament (MP) Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has announced his departure from the Madani government. As the president of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda), he deemed this decision challenging yet necessary. The catalyst for this move was the government's controversial decision to drop 47 corruption charges against Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

  Jeffrery affirmed that MUDA's withdrawal of support for PH was a difficult decision, but Sarawak MUDA stood behind their president's move. Their commitment to eradicating corruption remained unwavering. The recent acquittal of Zahid Hamidi on corruption charges, despite prima facie evidence, underscored the growing discord between MUDA and the government.

  Furthermore, Sarawak MUDA aligned itself with the headquarters by withdrawing its support for PH. However, this decision did not impede Sarawak MUDA's ongoing public service, as they had historically operated independently. Despite prior support for PH, MUDA had never received equitable treatment and was notably excluded from recent six-state elections and PH negotiation meetings.

  With PH now aligning with UMNO, public sentiment is closely monitored, and it is anticipated that in the forthcoming elections, people may react by withdrawing their support. The evolving political landscape raises questions about the future trajectory of MUDA and its alignment with political parties.

  *DAP's Commitment to Reforms: Collaboration Amidst Political Diversity*

  This is the first time UMNO has attended a DAP convention, which reflects the harmony and cooperation within the unity government.

  In the past, UMNO has often described DAP as a communist party and accused it of holding racist positions. However, today they are present at the DAP convention and have witnessed a diverse, multi-ethnic representation within the DAP delegation.

  Regarding MUDA's decision to announce support for DAP, Oscar Ling expressed his belief that MUDA might have been disappointed in DAP. However, he also pointed out that the acquittal of Zahid Hamidi was a decision made by the judges, and as such, we need to await the court's explanation. If Zahid Hamidi is proven guilty, he should, of course, be charged accordingly.

  Oscar Ling further stated that DAP has been actively working on the reforms entrusted by the people, including collaboration with the unity government.

  In summary, UMNO's attendance at the DAP convention signifies a form of reconciliation and cooperation in the political landscape, while emphasizing the importance of multiculturalism. Meanwhile, cooperation and reform efforts between the government and the opposition are ongoing.

  *Sarawak's Interior Challenges: From Flooded Bridges to Neglected Needs*

  In recent news, a viral video has been circulating on social media depicting a four-wheel-drive vehicle plunging into a swift river. This incident occurred on a road in Ulu Tinjar, where there used to be a bridge. Unfortunately, the bridge was washed away during a flood that occurred in the past two years. Despite the passage of time since the pandemic began, the bridge has yet to be rebuilt. Consequently, residents of the inland areas have been forced to take risks, waiting for the river to recede before attempting to cross. However, this approach is fraught with danger, especially during the rainy season or when the river swells, as it poses a risk of vehicles becoming stranded in the middle of the river.

  Around the same time, during a visit to Sabah, Agong called on the relevant authorities to address the bridge issue in the Sungai Liwagu area. His Majesty noted that the area was beautiful, but the condition of the divided bridge made it challenging for local villagers to access.

  In light of these concerns, residents of Ulu Tinjar are also appealing for attention to the dire situation in Sarawak's interior regions. They point out that issues related to roads, schools, and healthcare persist in these areas. Nunggang, a spokesperson, expressed hope that when Agong visits Sarawak, he will take notice of the problems plaguing the state's interior areas and advocate for their resolution.

  *Injustice in Sarawak: The Fight Against the Carbon Trading Bill*

  Sarawak's Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni said that only owners of NCR land that have been gazetted are eligible for a carbon trading license. According to Dennis- this is GPS's tactic of denying the rights of the Natives and Dayaks of Sarawak to be involved in an industry worth billions of ringgit. Throughout Baram, Apoh-Tutoh, Marudi up to Mulu. Not a single acre of Baram residents' NCR land is gazetted. On the other hand, logging companies that destroy the environment (Samling) are given a carbon trading license by the GPS Sarawak Government. Dennis urged the people of Sarawak to realize that since the beginning the policy of the Sarawak BN government and now the GPS is pressuring the Indigenous/Dayak people to remain poor so that they are easy to manipulate. Dennis asked the public to protest the Carbon trading and Land Affairs Bill that will be tabled in the Sarawak state assembly this November. Which it will definitely not favor the Dayak people. For 60 years the Orang Asal/Dayak have been pleading for their NCR land to be gazetted and given a title deed. However, this request could not be fulfilled by the GPS Sarawak government. On the other hand, PL and logging concessions of hundreds of hectares were given to foreigners who came from Sibu, Miri, Bintulu, Kuching and even some companies from Malaya were also given PL.

  *Baram's Potential as a Rice Hub: Government Initiatives Needed*

  George Laeng from Baram comments on the rice issue. He mentions that Baram still has vast areas suitable for rice cultivation, but the government does not have plans to promote rice farming in Baram. This is because the government tends to grant land (PL) to companies for oil palm cultivation. If the economy is uncertain and people suffer, it is not the fault of the people but rather the government's lack of early planning for the future economy and its people.

  The issue of rising rice prices would not exist if the people could engage in modern rice cultivation supported by the government, eliminating the need to import rice from foreign countries. People often hear promises of rural development from the government, but these are often just empty words.

  While many blame the federal government for the rising rice prices, it is important for every state government to make efforts to control rice prices, even though it is a global issue. Therefore, the Sarawak state government must take action and plan to promote rice cultivation in the interior regions with significant potential for rice farming. Areas like Baram and Bario have fertile land suitable for rice cultivation.

  The Sarawak government should focus on Baram as a major rice producer in Sarawak. There was a time when Kuala Tutoh was a place for rice cultivation, so why wasn't it continued? The government should reactivate rice farming schemes in the interior regions. If the issue of rice prices cannot be controlled, it means that the Sarawak state government has failed to assist its people. The government should raise awareness in every longhouse and encourage rice cultivation so that people are not dependent on imported rice.

  *The Need for a Robust Opposition in Sarawak Politics*

  The announcement by Abang Jo that GPS will be contesting all 82 seats in the upcoming State election in 2026 or 2027 is not a new development, as they already achieved a substantial majority in the 2021 state election with a significant win of 76 seats. This tally does not include seats from PSB, which is said to support Abang Jo's government and collaborate with PDP, led by Datuk Tiong. In Sarawak, there are only two opposition ADUN from DAP of PH, so it may not be too early to speculate that GPS will negotiate with any party, especially Sarawak PH, with the goal of contesting all seats, possibly under the banner of a Unity Government.

  However, if we reflect on the outcome of the 2021 election, more than 289,000 voters turned out, and the voter turnout was 746,000, who voted for opposition parties, constituting approximately 38.7 percent of the total vote. What could be on their minds? The point being made here is the need for a strong opposition party to provide a check and balance in the political landscape.

  The release of Zahid (DNAA) is strange and surprising. After going through a 4-year trial and calling 99 witnesses including 15 witnesses featured by TPM Zahid. It is strange for the prosecution to acquit Zahid with DNAA. When the prosecution has succeeded in establishing a prima facie case, the case should continue to the end. At this point, saying that Zahid was released by the court is too general a statement. Zahid was released by the judge when the judge had no choice when the prosecution did not proceed with the prosecution. This shows as if there is a conspiracy to free Zahid. Moreover, the Attorney General has just been changed, the prosecutor for this case has also changed. Although PMX insists that he does not interfere in judicial affairs. This is not enough to convince the general public. So the way forward - according to Hui Yee. The king will ask the prime minister to solve the problem immediately. This is the good thing when a King who has the soul of the people can go down to the field and understand the people's problems. Therefore - according to Dennis Along, if only TYT Sarawak Taib Mahmud - could do the same thing. This will help solve people's problems. In Baram, the Sungai Tutoh bridge has been cut off due to flooding for the past 3 years. Causing problems for thousands of Baram residents. So far not fixed. Bad and dangerous road problems, no electricity and water supply. Still shackles the people of Sarawak. Is this what the people of Sarawak should be proud of after 60 years of independence, asked Dennis. Therefore, I suggest that the Governor of Sarawak should be appointed from among people who are outside the political radar - so that they can act using humanitarian values.   Deputy Premier Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has announced that Sarawak aims to create 1.5 million jobs by 2030 through its Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. Around 200,000 of these positions will be in the technical and skilled sectors.

  Chris wonders why we have to wait for seven years to provide such a significant number of job opportunities. In Sarawak, the minimum wage is 1500, and even with a degree, salaries are not substantial. Given the current economic downturn, these wages may not be sufficient for a decent living, prompting many young people to seek employment abroad or in West Malaysia.

  Despite Sarawak's numerous large-scale projects offering employment opportunities, like the Pan Borneo Highway, questions arise about what will happen once these projects are completed. Could they potentially lead to a surge in unemployment? It appears that the Sarawak government has yet to develop a comprehensive plan to address these concerns.

  Following the high court's decision to release without releasing TPM Zahid Hamidi's DNAA on Monday 4 Sept 2023. Is this a desperate move by PMX to release Zahid from the court case to maintain UMNO's support for the Unity government?. Iswardy answered no. Anwar insisted that there is no political interference in judicial affairs. The cause of this DNAA case is because of the prosecution's evidence. The case was brought to court at the insistence of PM Mahathir (2018) in a hurry before enough evidence was collected. Mahathir wanted Zahid to disband UMNO in June 2018. But Zahid refused, so in October 2023 Zahid was charged, even though the MACC did not have all the evidence yet. So if this case continues. Iswardy is confident that the prosecution does not have enough evidence to convict Zahid. If PMX is accused of having the intention of freeing Zahid, why can Muhyiddin Yassin also be released and released on 15 August 2023 on 4 charges of using his position for bribery amounting to RM232.5 million. According to Iswardy these two cases were started when Mahathir was prime minister. The decision was made when PMX Anwar became prime minister. Anwar is firm that he will not interfere in judicial matters. However, when asked if the Anwar administration was serious about reforming the judicial institution by avoiding the Prime Minister's intervention in relation to the appointment of the attorney general and the separation of the attorney general and prosecutor departments.   *Protecting Judicial Integrity: A Call for Reform in Malaysia's Legal System*

  Regarding Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi's corruption case, which saw him being discharged without an acquittal on all 47 corruption charges related to Yayasan Akalbudi, this has raised genuine concerns among Bersih and many Malaysians. We are questioning whether there might be political influence involved in this matter.

  As we are aware, the Attorney General also serves as a public prosecutor under current laws. The Attorney General is appointed by the Prime Minister, which is a political appointment. This raises the question of whether the reasons provided by the deputy public prosecutor for needing more time to investigate the charges in Yayasan Akalbudi are valid. Furthermore, if there was not a thorough investigation conducted, why did the judge accept four years ago that there was prima facie evidence to proceed with the judgment?

  The fact that he was charged four years ago suggests that there was some basis for those charges. This raises concerns, especially in light of recent cases where individuals like Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Najib Razak were acquitted. In Najib's case, the Attorney General's office failed to file an appeal, resulting in the acquittal of Nasir and Arul Kanda.

  Our question is whether the Attorney General's chamber made a mistake or if these actions were deliberate. We have genuine concerns in this matter. Therefore, we propose the separation of the role of public prosecutor from the Attorney General's Chamber. This role should be played by an independent Attorney General, ensuring a fair and impartial legal process.

  *Communities Concerns Logging and its Environmental Impact in Ulu Baram*

  Mr. George Laeng calls upon the GPS government, together with PH, to halt logging activities, as logging has caused significant damage to the forests. During Adenan Satem's tenure as Sarawak's Chief Minister, he had put a stop to logging activities. However, these activities have now been reopened by the Sarawak government. Logging in Ulu Baram does not adhere to approved standards; in fact, they have expanded logging areas, which is deeply concerning because incursions are still occurring in Ulu Baram.

  George and Roland Enggan frequently monitor and take swift action in the event of incursions. They monitor illegal logging areas promptly. Logging is happening due to government-issued licenses. The people of Baram no longer trust the empty promises of logging companies because they are good at making promises but what happens to the logged timber and the royalties for the indigenous people?

  The roads and bridges in Ulu Baram have suffered severe damage, and they request the government and logging companies to repair and restore the roads and bridges.

  *Carbon Trading in Sarawak: Who Reaps the Benefits?*

  In the keynote speech at the Carbon Asia conference on 15 March 2023 which took place in Kuching. The Sarawak Premier expects that Sarawak will earn RM315 million to RM1.039 billion a year through Carbon trading. We agree with carbon trading for economic benefits and environmental sustainability. We maintain the forest and stop this logging (Zero logging) which PKR Baram proposed more than a year ago - according to Roland. But we still question who benefits the most when this carbon trading is implemented. Will Orang Asal also get a share of the carbon trading revenue? asked Roland. Or licensees and concession holders will be given and monopolized by giant logging and plantation companies that have been destroying and polluting the environment. We Sarawakians want laws that favor the people, not capitalist companies. Roland lashed out at the Sarawak Government under the leadership of GPS which wants carbon emissions but still allows/gives licenses to loggers. This is the difference between our policy when compared to GPS. Roland wants the proceeds of carbon trading to be paid directly to the people who look after/own the forest where the carbon is obtained.

  Another thing that the people should be aware of according to Roland, the Carbon Trading and Land Affairs Bill (to be presented in November 2023) will give the state government the right to control, dominate and collect revenue not only from the forest but also what is in the land , rivers and in the air (including carbon). This all gives results to the state government but not to the poor people who own land, rivers and forests. Roland urged the people of Sarawak to elect a government that safeguards their rights and at the same time provides economic prosperity. Regarding the GPS issue, all 82 state assembly seats will be contested in PRN13 Sarawak. Roland stressed that PH and PKR Sarawak are ready at any time to replace GPS to govern Sarawak. With the awareness of the majority of the people will give hope for change.

  *GPS Persists with ART, but Fails to Solve Traffic Realities*

  Sarawak now has an Automated Rapid Transit (ART) system, which is currently in the testing and data collection phase. Will it effectively address traffic congestion in both Samarahan and Kuching?

  Despite criticisms from the public, including those raised in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN), ART has finally been introduced in Kuching. It appears that GPS state government is determined to proceed with this project.

  However, the question remains: why do we need ART? Its designated route is from Kota Samarahan to alleviate traffic issues in that area. Can this ART system truly resolve the traffic problems in Kota Samarahan?

  Jeffrery said that, currently, we have hydrogen and electric buses that remain unused and are parked at the old DUN building. Now, with the introduction of ART, which can transport hundreds of passengers, we have a more visually appealing and modern alternative. ART operates on rubber tires and is touted to be more cost-effective than Light Rail Transit (LRT), which requires expensive rail infrastructure.

  ART has the capacity to accommodate 300 passengers, but the question arises: do we have a sufficient number of passengers to fill it? Public buses faced challenges in the past, with limited success. In earlier times, they were more popular due to lower car ownership rates.

  Given the evolving circumstances, self-driving options have become increasingly important. Are the people of Samarahan willing to rely on ART as their primary mode of transportation for commuting to work or sending their children to school? Will it replace services like Grab, motorcycles, and private cars? So far, it doesn't seem to be heading in that direction.

  *Dapsy Sarawak Urges Government Action for Affordable Local Rice*

  The Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak has urged the state government to take immediate actions to ensure that Sarawak residents have access to affordable locally-produced white rice.

  Peter Hee, expressed concern over the rising prices of imported rice, attributed to supply issues and increased transportation costs. Recently, Bernas announced a significant increase in the wholesale price of imported white rice, from RM2,350 per tonne to RM3,200 per tonne, effective this month.

  Hee pointed out that many Sarawakians are compelled to buy costly imported rice because most local vendors do not offer locally-produced white rice.

  He stated, The people of Sarawak have no other alternatives and are compelled to purchase expensive imported rice.

  Hee proposed that the Sarawak government take steps to reduce the reliance on imported rice, promote local rice cultivation, safeguard food safety, and ensure a stable supply and pricing of locally-produced white rice.

  He emphasized that, across Malaysia, Sarawak is the only region lacking access to affordable locally-produced white rice. The Sarawak government bears responsibility for this shortfall.

  Hee also cautioned that it would be a grave dereliction of duty if Sarawak residents were unable to afford the benefits of reasonably priced local rice.

  *PRN13 Sarawak: GPS want to Oust PH Sarawak from Power*

  Iswardy give his opinion on 3 issues related to the Sarawak GPS government. That is, Sarawak Premier Abang Johari stated that in PRN13 Sarawak which is expected in 2026 or at the latest on April 15, 2027. GPS will not compromise to give state assembly seats to friends in the unity government. Because not a member of the coalition at the state government level. For Iswardy - this open statement by the Premier of Sarawak gives a clear indication that GPS wants absolute power at the state level at the same time this will strengthen their dominance at the parliamentary level. With that strength will allow GPS to have enough bargaining power. This means that PH Sarawak can criticize the wrongdoing of the GPS administration in Sarawak and PH Sarawak's preparations for the state election should start from now.

  Petronas group president/chief executive Tan sri Muhammad Taufik revealed that until August 2023, Petronas has paid SST- RM13 billion to Sarawak and RM8 billion to Sabah. This payment is made monthly. According to Iswardy, money is not a problem for Sarawak. On the other hand, the big problem for Sarawak is efficient management, good governance and priorities. Many mega projects are implemented not for the people. But implemented to benefit cronies. Therefore, according to Iswardy, the upcoming PRN13 Sarawak is an important moment to get rid of the capitalists/taukeh who control the movement and behavior of GPS politicians in Sarawak. The people of Sarawak have a great responsibility to make changes. At the federal level, the government led by Anwar Ibrahim is doing it and PRN13 is an opportunity for the people of Sarawak to kick out the big taukehs who have controlled all the state's revenue all this time

  GPS in November 2023, will present the carbon trading and land affairs bill. Will it benefit the people of Sarawak? Iswardy thinks that the number of opposition in the Sarawak State Assembly is too small, so that GPS can do anything. All laws passed by GPS are for the benefit of the capitalists who have financed their election campaigns all this time. The people of Sarawak must unite to get rid of GPS.

  "Some 1.5 million jobs are expected to be created in Sarawak up to the year 2030," announced Deputy Premier Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. He further explained that these job opportunities would be the result of various programs and initiatives outlined in the state's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. One of the primary objectives of this strategy is to increase the income of the people of Sarawak. Out of the total projected job opportunities (1.5 million), approximately 200,000 of them will be in the technical or skilled sector.

  However, Mahmud raises questions regarding GPS's approach, asking why they must wait until 2030 for these additional employment opportunities. He also asserts that GPS seems to lack a fundamental understanding of the challenges faced by young people. Mahmud contends that the issue goes beyond merely creating job opportunities; it also involves the necessity for skill development and avenues for personal and professional growth.

  Mahmud emphasizes the importance of staying current with the times and argues that young people need to adapt to the new era by acquiring a diverse set of skills. He criticizes GPS for not adequately addressing this aspect. Instead, Mahmud believes that GPS is repeatedly presenting large figures (such as the promise of 1.5 million job opportunities) as a solution to the economic pressures faced by young people, which, in his view, falls short of addressing the underlying issues.

  He strongly urges GPS to gain a better understanding of the realities and pressures experienced by young people and to create more opportunities for improvement and education among the youth.

  Fatimah of Ulu Tingkayu Lahad Datu

  *Appeals Court Favoring the Company: Sabah Community to Appeal to the Federal Court*

  The Sabah Court of Appeal, on August 29, 2023, dismissed the appeal made by Fatimah and others, who are smallholders of oil palm plantations. The case has its roots dating back to 2002 when Fatimah's late father, along with his friends and in-laws, cleared an area in Upper Tingkayu. They planted tapioca and oil palms in an area that was hours away from Lahad Datu in those days.

  However, in 2020, they were confronted by a group of individuals acting as enforcers, seemingly on behalf of Mega Land oil palm plantation, who sought to forcibly remove them from the area. The community demanded an explanation from these enforcers, who had been ordered by Mega Land, and resisted their efforts. They lodged police reports and discovered that the land had been issued titles, even though the community had applied for titles for many years, facing various excuses from the Land and Survey Department.

  Over the course of three months, the community faced intimidation, with even some villagers being assaulted. Initially, when unknown individuals entered their area, they believed it might have been a mistake. However, they later realized that land titles had only been issued in 2021.

  In October 2021, the company presented land titles and ordered the villagers to vacate the area. The community was also surprised to receive a court letter, which they had never received before. In response, in 2021, Mega Land filed a summons against Fatimah and five others.

  In total, there are 29 lots in that area, but only 21 of them fall within the area claimed by Mega Land oil palm plantation.

  The community was unaware that the area had been surveyed. Following the Court of Appeal's decision in favor of the company, the community intends to pursue an appeal to the Federal Court.

  *Instead of Emphasizing Rural Development, Minister Should Visit the Interior to Assess Public Sentiment*

  Len Talif Salleh, the Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, has reaffirmed the importance of rural development as a top priority in Sarawak. He emphasized that the GPS led state government remains dedicated to prioritizing essential infrastructure projects and implementing comprehensive development initiatives that benefit all communities across Sarawak. Robert has highlighted that despite Malaysia celebrating its 60th anniversary, there are still numerous regions within Sarawak lacking essential infrastructure. He has called upon the government to impartially provide all Sarawakians with the welfare and rights they deserve.

  Robert has made a specific request for Minister Len Talif Salleh to personally visit the interior regions and witness their conditions. As an illustrative example, he pointed to the situation in Ulu Sebau, which is a mere 40 kilometers away from Bintulu. Despite the proximity, students in Ulu Sebau must still rely on boats to reach their schools, as the GPS government has not constructed even basic bridges. This makes the journey to school exceptionally challenging, particularly during the rainy season when river levels rise, posing significant risks to the children's safety.

  Robert's overarching argument is that despite Sarawak's 60-year membership in Malaysia, the GPS state government has not adequately addressed the infrastructure issues in the interior regions. Consequently, many residents in these areas continue to grapple with challenges related to accessing clean water, education, and communication facilities.

  Four days ago, a coalition of Islamic NGOs in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan proposed the establishment of an Islamic Malay government/administration without DAP (Chinese) at the state and federal levels. The reason – because of the big victory of all the Muslim Malay candidates in the last 6 state elections and the majority of the current members of parliament are Muslim Malays. Furthermore, according to the Chairman of Ummah Defender Movement – Mohd Zai Mustafa, DAP oppresses Malay Muslims in Selangor and Sembilan state.

Monopolizing national and state administration based on Islamic Malay alone is against the concept of power sharing which is the basis of the formation of Malaysia. If this basis is set aside.   In the recent state election trend, PAS retained its ruling position in Kelantan. However, despite numerous development projects being planned and initiated, the anticipated benefits and outcomes have yet to materialize. Furthermore, the economic foundation of the state is facing sustainability challenges, primarily due to its heavy dependence on logging as the main source of income. This overreliance is problematic due to the limited availability of forest resources. The long-term impact on the state's economy is a significant concern.

  It's important to note that all development projects are currently handled by the federal government. Regrettably, the state government has not introduced any projects aimed at alleviating poverty among the Orang Asli communities in Kelantan. Compounding these issues is the strained relationship between the Kelantan state government and the federal government. This strained relationship could potentially lead to negative consequences in terms of collaborative efforts and resource allocation.

  Furthermore, there has been an encroachment by state government agencies on the lands of Orang Asli communities in Kampung Angkeh. While over 30 individuals have lodged police reports, there are still many who are yet to do so. As a result, the release of a comprehensive press statement has been postponed until all affected villagers have submitted their police reports.

This declaration comes in anticipation of the upcoming Baram Regatta 2023 scheduled for next month, which is expected to draw a considerable number of visitors.

  Elias, a concerned local resident, highlighted a shift in the approach towards managing the stray dog population in Marudi. During the initial outbreak of the first rabies case, organizations like the Marudi District Council actively pursued stray dogs as a preventive measure. However, over time, the emphasis on hunting down stray dogs has diminished, leading to a noticeable rise in the number of dogs freely roaming the streets.

  This trend has raised several concerns, particularly in light of the upcoming Baram Regatta. Elias called upon individuals who are dog advocates to take responsibility for their pets and prevent them from wandering unrestricted. He stressed the importance of maintaining vigilance to avoid any potential rabies transmission risks during the event.

  As Marudi assumes its new classification as a rabies infected zone, the focus on managing the stray dog population gains renewed importance. With the convergence of visitors expected for the Baram Regatta 2023, it is crucial for both local authorities and the public to collaborate in ensuring the safety of everyone by preventing the unchecked roaming of dogs and potential rabies exposure.

  Celine and the delegation from Sarawak are in Basel Switzerland to attend the Rainforest Tribunal and will then attend the trial of the defamation suit brought by (Jamilah Taib) daughter of TYT Sarawak Taib mahmud against BMF. Explaining about the Rainforest Tribunal - according to Celine it is a staging that talks about the deforestation/logging that is happening in Sarawak (Borneo). Many parties were called to testify, including logging workers, scientists, journalists, activists, politicians and the indigenous/Penan people who every day feel fear and threats every time they defend their forests. According to Celine, although we are unable to stop logging completely. But at least, we are informed, consent from us should be obtained and our rights should be respected. We also question - where are the results of logging for decades?. Celine was excited because many parties sent positive feedback (especially Sarawakians) and wanted to join the campaign against deforestation.

  Samling Group received the distinguished 'Most Diversified and Value-Adding Timber Manufacturer' award from the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) as part of their 50th-anniversary celebration. The award was presented in the presence of Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg. STIDC commended Samling for diversifying their operations, prioritizing high-value production, and aligning with the Sarawak government's goal of boosting the timber industry and achieving RM8 billion in annual exports by 2030.

  However, amid this recognition, Salomon expresses discontent with Samling's honor and raises thought-provoking questions about the ethics of deforestation and the resulting extinction of trees. Salomon, a master of the traditional Sape musical instrument, has dedicated years to both studying and crafting Sape instruments. He highlights the necessity of the Adau tree for crafting Sape, but due to rampant deforestation, these trees are now increasingly scarce and at risk of extinction. The scarcity of Adau trees as raw materials has driven up instrument prices and led to a decline in the number of people learning this art. Beyond the economic implications, this situation presents challenges for the continuation of this traditional culture.

  Salomon asserts that the destruction caused by deforestation cannot be viewed as honorable. He draws attention to the fact that these forests are vital for sustaining indigenous communities, and the negative impact extends beyond livelihoods. Practices such as preserving indigenous culture through music are also suffering due to the consequences of destructive logging activities.

  *From Ballots to Land Battles: PAS State Government Accused of Encroaching Orang Asli Ancestral Lands*

  After the conclusion of the state elections in six states on August 12, PAS secured significant victories in Kelantan, Kedah, and Terengganu. While the public anticipated the state governments to implement policies beneficial to the people, news emerged that indigenous lands in Kelantan were being encroached upon by the state government, contradicting this expectation.

  On August 16, 2023, more than 30 communities from Kpg Angkeh in Gua Musang, Kelantan, including Nora, jointly filed a police report at IPD Gua Musang. The incident revolves around the encroachment by the Kelantan state's Yayasan (Foundation) onto land owned by the Kpg Angkeh community.

  This encroachment led to the destruction of their gardens, which contained fruit trees, rubber trees, and other crops, all without obtaining Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC). Their water catchment area was also impacted. The community, under Nora's leadership, organized a press release on-site to draw attention to the issue. The encroachment came to light when one member of the community discovered the incident while visiting their garden and informed the entire community.

  Nora herself suffered losses, as her paddy farm and vegetable garden were also destroyed. Adding to the complexity of the situation, the Kelantan state agency, Tok Kenali, erected signboards claiming the land as state government property and prohibiting the community's access to the affected areas.

  As a response, more communities are expected to file police reports, highlighting the urgent need to address this encroachment issue and the broader concern of land rights and sustainability.

  *Defending Vulnerable Groups' Rights Amid Death Threats? Siti Kassim Calls for Fair Police Investigation*

  The police investigation into the discovery of two homemade bombs found beneath the car of lawyer-activist Siti Kasim has reached a standstill. According to Kuala Lumpur police chief Shuhaily Zain, the examination of CCTV footage from various locations has failed to identify any potential suspects. Furthermore, no fingerprints were found on the explosive devices except for Siti's fingerprints on the vehicle. Siti Kasim expressed her surprise at this turn of events. However, she expressed disappointment upon learning that the CCTV cameras at the Kajang court complex car park were not operational. She stated, "I don't know whether it's true or not, but I was told that the CCTV (there) is not working." The incident unfolded on July 21 when Siti noticed two suspicious objects beneath her car after taking it to a workshop in Kuala Lumpur for routine servicing. She documented the discovery in a video posted on Facebook, showing what appeared to be plastic water bottles attached to her car's suspension. The bomb squad was subsequently dispatched. Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain later confirmed that the objects were improvised explosive devices (IEDs) intended to cause harm to Siti. In response to the situation, Siti highlighted her involvement in advocating for indigenous rights and various cases, including indigenous individuals dying in detention centers and land disputes. The threat she now faces is unexpected, as most threats were previously limited to online platforms. Adding to her concerns, Siti expressed frustration at the shifting stance of the police. Initially, there were indications of imminent arrests, but the situation has changed. She is now calling for a more comprehensive investigation into the matter.
