    Today, deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed that he had received intelligence that the "Dubai Move" was carefully planned by a group of PN leaders and government parliamentarians to topple Anwar Ibtahim as prime minister. According to Voon, the information he received, Abang Johari (Premier of Sarawak) was offered the position of PM of Malaysia. Voon thinks that GPS should support Dubai Move and take the opportunity to be appointed to the position of prime minister in order to take back the rights of Sabah/Sarawak that have been usurped by Malaya - especially in relation to oil, gas and the continental shelf and another is that it gives Sarawak an opportunity to reassess its position in Federation of Malaysia.

    Asked if that will once again cause political instability in Malaysia. Voon thinks "Dubai Move" gives GPS an open opportunity to accept the offer or reject it. If GPS rejects the offer and agrees to continue supporting PM Anwar Ibrahim. This also gives more space to GPS to demand more from Anwar. The current situation is so much in favor of GPS and it is up to GPS to take advantage of the current situation for the benefit of Sarawak.

    *Sponsoring the Tallest Flagpole: Is it True CSR? Questioning the Meaning of CSR by Petro Companies*

    During the countdown event at Kuching Waterfront, the tallest flagpole in Southeast Asia, measuring 99 metres in height, flying the Sarawak state flag named officially as ‘Ibu Pertiwi’ was launched by Premier Sarawak Abang Johari. Abang Johari also revealed the RM30-million flagpole project was funded by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and Shell Malaysia as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR)

    What is CSR? CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) is the responsibility of businesses to engage in meaningful actions for society. CSR refers to the corporate responsibility towards society and the environment, encompassing the impact of businesses on society and the environment, as well as the measures taken by businesses to assume responsibility and reduce negative effects. However, the highest flag, symbolizing positive impacts on society, is not being raised.

    Thomas Jalong mentioned that there are still many areas in Sarawak facing inadequate basic infrastructure, such as inland roads, water and electricity supply, clinics, and education. These are areas where businesses can contribute and take on CSR, but unfortunately, the most profitable companies sponsor the highest flags without providing assistance to inland roads, water and electricity supply, and medical education facilities.

    Regarding Abang Johari's statement about including more organizations, Thomas Jalong believes that the responsibility of NGOs is to supervise the government and help voice concerns for specific or vulnerable groups. If they become part of the government, they may lose the right to correct the government or propose policy reforms.

    *Sarawak's Wealth Divide: Unanswered Questions After 30 Years of Leadership*

    Mr Veron criticizes the statement of Taib Mahmood regarding Sarawak's high income. Mr. Veron questions the evidence supporting the claim that Sarawak is a high-income state, pointing out that many Sarawakians still migrate to the peninsula for work. In Sarawak, there are also numerous individuals unable to find employment due to a lack of MyKard (identity card). Additionally, basic infrastructure such as good roads, electricity, and water treatment facilities have not reached many rural residents.

    He highlights that many Sarawakians lack land for development as the government grants licenses to logging and plantation companies on indigenous land. Mr. Veron questions the meaning of being a high-income state when the rights of the people are not protected.

    Despite Sarawak generating billions in profits, he questions whether the people benefit from these earnings. With over 3 million residents in Sarawak, he questions why the government hesitates to allocate even 1 percent of the billion-ringgit revenue to the people. According to him, Sarawak's wealth seems to be reserved only for the leaders.

    After over 30 years of Taib's leadership as the Chief Minister of Sarawak, Mr. Veron wonders where the state's profits from the past 30 years have gone and why Sarawak is still considered poor.

    *Rising Waters and Broken Bridges: The Crisis in Kuala Betis, Kelantan*

    On the flood issue in Gua Musang since December 22nd, continuous rainfall in the interior has led to a sudden rise in water levels in the surrounding areas of Kuala Betis, Kelantan. Kuala Betis serves as a connection point for three rivers: Sg Broke, Sg Petrias, and is known as the mouth of the river.

    The ongoing rainfall in the interior has caused damages, including connection problems, broken bridges, and landslides. People in the affected areas are unable to access food supplies from the town, and currently, there is no news of food supplies from anybody. The speaker hopes that JAKOA, the welfare department, or government agencies can urgently supply food to the affected families via air transport.

    The affected communities include Pos Haw, Pos Balar, Pos Belatin, Pos Simpo, Pos Goh, Pos Tohoi, and Pos Pasih. Usually, school children experience delays in starting school.

    *Worry and Reality: the Impact of False Diesel Subsidy Cancellation News on Rural Residents*

    A notice went viral on social media stating that the diesel subsidy will be removed effective January 1, 2024. However, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living - quickly denied that the news was true and informed that the ministry is conducting a pilot project to see the effectiveness of the fleet system card and Mysubsidi Diesel system. Involving 6 companies that received quotas for "skid tanks" that will expire on January 14 next. Even if it's fake news, it still worries us rural residents. Moreover, we are diesel users - Dominic Langat said. The majority of poor people in the interior use 4-wheel drive cars. Not because we are rich. But only this vehicle is able to move on rickshaw and muddy roads (log roads) in the interior. Our one-way trip to the village took 8 hours and a round trip would take over 16 hours. Therefore, the consumption of diesel for my car per month averages RM700. I am worried if the targeted subsidy that will be implemented next year does not provide as much subsidy as expected. Maybe the government thinks why poor people need to use a lot of diesel. The reason is, our village is far away. The distance between the garden and the place where we go hunting is deep in the forest. Therefore, I hope that the government will consider these factors when approving the amount of diesel subsidies that will be given to us

    Anyi Lah from Long Tebangan Ulu Baram

    *Holiday Homecoming Hurdles: Damaged Roads and Bridges in the Interior*

    Anyi Lah shared the challenges faced during every festive season, particularly the road conditions for the journey back to the village through logging roads that become slippery during the rainy season. Additionally, there are several damaged and unsafe bridges.

    The road, which takes several hours to travel to Long Tebangan, has been in use for a long time through logging roads that depend entirely on logging companies. It is disheartening for a wealthy state to have such road conditions used by the rural population for decades. Every return to the village results in vehicle damage, posing a significant burden on the people who have no choice but to use these poor roads.

    Anyi questions whether they can pay lower road taxes compared to the high rates for 4x4 vehicle owners, as it is unfair to pay the same road tax as urban areas for poorly maintained roads in rural areas for decades.

    *Unity in Diversity: A Call for Inclusive Nation-Building*

    Arutchelvan argues that having an "Indian or Tamil-speaking" minister does not necessarily translate into better representation for the community, which continues to be plagued by socio-economic problems. He responds to the comments made by the former Penang deputy chief minister II P Ramasamy, who described the new cabinet as a "big disappointment" to the Indians for failing to appoint an Indian minister. Arutchelvan states that in the past, during Mahathir Mohamad's 22-year tenure as prime minister, there were calls for two full ministerial posts for Indians, but this did not materialize. "Then during Mahathir's 22-month reign (when Pakatan Harapan was in power), suddenly there were four Indian ministers. I am including Gobind as well for this one. But the point is, whether one, two, three, or four, was the community better represented?" Arutchelvan questions. For Arutchelvan, the fundamental question is whether cabinet ministers should represent all Malaysians or just their respective races. He also points out how the ideology of multiracial and class-based politics is challenged by mono-ethnic politics, emphasizing the importance of a nation-building project based on unity instead of divide and rule.

She urged employers to uphold their employees' rights and refrain from religious discrimination.

    Siti emphasized that religious matters should not be excessively sensitive, emphasizing that it's common sense, but societal manipulation and misunderstandings on social media have exacerbated the situation. This distortion led to instances like the restaurant owner misinterpreting the act of wearing a cross as inappropriate. Siti Kasim deems such perspectives as misguided.

    *Summit Memo: Orang Asli Communities Appeal to Perak MB for Urgent Intervention*

    Encroachment logging activities are taking place in the Orang Asli communities of Kg Sg Papan, Kg Kensew, and Kg Janking in Grik, Perak, carried out by Majuta Sdn Bhd. The affected area, known as the Kensew ancestral domain, encompasses the Luakwang region and spans 80 hectares. The signboard indicates that the initial entry occurred in July 2023, marked by the construction of a logging road that traverses from Sg Papan straight to Felda FGV 1, then to Felda Tawai 2, and into the Luakwang area. The boundaries of this area connect with Kg Keyef, Ong Jemol, and Kg Cunek, forming four distinct territories.

    Anjang and the team submitted a memorandum to Menteri Besar Perak and JAKOA Perak on Tuesday. Earlier, the communities set up a new One Kensew AJK, which includes communities of Kpg Papan and Kpg Jenking as required by JAKOA. PEKA also intended to visit the encroachment site but needed to postpone due to cabinet reshuffling. Despite the company's attempts to seek permission and offer compensation, the communities, including Kg Keyef, Ong Jemol, and Kg Cunek, steadfastly refused, even declining a cash compensation proposal of RM100.00.

    There has been no approval for the redelineation of electoral constituencies in any state in Malaysia, according to the Deputy Chairman of the Election Commission, Dr. Azmi Shahrom. The addition of parliamentary seats can only occur through an amendment to the federal constitution. Media reports mention that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) claims to potentially gain at least 12 new parliamentary seats after the redelineation of electoral constituencies.

    Constitutional expert Tan Sri Azizan Harun stated that any effort to redelineate parliamentary and state constituency electoral areas is subject to Article 113 of the federal constitution. Only the Election Commission (EC) has the authority to propose the number of additional seats. Redelineation can take place after 8 years and must be completed within 2 years. This implies that the last redelineation of parliamentary electoral constituencies occurred in 2018, and the next redelineation will commence in 2026, to be completed by 2028. If the 15th parliamentary term ends in 2027, the elections at that time will still use the old electoral format/constituencies.     *Energy Transition Challenges: Advocating Ministerial Transparency and Community Involvement*

    In the recent cabinet reshuffle, the Ministry of Environment underwent a transformation, being split into the Ministry of Energy Transition and Public Utilities, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Sustainable Development. Deputy Prime Minister Fadhilah simultaneously assumed the role of Minister of Energy Transition and Public Utilities. Barnie Lasimbang expressed that the addition of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Public Utilities by the government reflects a heightened focus on energy transition, and there are expectations regarding the achievements this department will make in areas such as dams and solar energy.

    However, he also voiced concerns about Fadillah Yusof's appointment as the leader of this ministry. He pointed out that Fadillah Yusof hails from Sarawak's GPS, and the current GPS state government appears to be actively promoting projects such as carbon trading and the construction of giant dams. However, a critical issue arises when these projects lack transparency, potentially leading to significant environmental damage and adverse impacts on the land rights of indigenous communities.

    Barnie Lasimbang urged Fadillah Yusof to engage more actively in dialogue and communication, to listen attentively to the opinions of the communities, and to conduct more effective communication. Simultaneously, he called on the government to allocate funds to non-governmental organizations and the general public to collectively promote green energy, enabling broader societal participation in the pursuit of sustainable development goals.     Lim Hui Ying, Former Senior Journalist

    *Pressing for Change: Evaluating Malaysia's Legislative Reforms After One Year*

    Hui Ying told that her name is the same as the name of a deputy minister in Anwar Ibrahim's PMX cabinet. But she is just a former senior journalist of a newspaper.

    Hui Ying gave a view in conjunction with the 1 year PMX administration and analyzed the report published by CIJ - Center for Independent Journalism. The CIJ survey related to the Madani government's commitment to the level of freedom of expression in Malaysia, is still far from fulfilling the promise of reform.

    She agree with the view of the CIJ, the Sedition Act of 1948 is still in place, despite pre-election promises that it will be repealed. In fact in 2023, 184 investigations were conducted and 29 of them were investigated under the sedition act. Not only the government has not abolished, in fact, no act to replace it has been proposed. If it is maintained? what is the reason and should there be a special provision. Not a one-size-fits-all/all-issues act. In addition, the amendment to the Official Secrets Act of 1927 has not yet materialized. The printing press and publishing act was still in force and there were several raids on bookshops. The amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act and the 2010 Whistleblower Act amendments have not yet appeared in Parliament. The protection of whistleblowers should be taken seriously. Failure to do so will affect the outcome of cases being investigated in court, Hui Ying summed up.

    Although the government seems to be trying and there have been efforts, However, the failure to amend or improve these acts after a year, causes the government to be seen as a failure. Hui Ying believes that only pressure from the people can force the government to act quickly and fulfill their promises.

    Ms. Agnes from Dijih Selangau

    *Sarawak's Firm Stand: Rejecting PAS's 2R Politics*

    Ms. Agnes shares her perspective on PAS, which she believes often plays on religious and racial issues. She responds to Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang's statement regarding non-Muslims being able to become Prime Minister, criticizing PAS for rebuffing such statements.

    Ms. Agnes emphasizes that politics should not involve playing the "2R" card, as this can destroy unity. She expresses gratitude that PAS is not accepted in Sarawak, as she perceives that PAS remains unchanged and continues to use the "2R" issue in their political agenda.

    She asserts that individuals from other ethnicities can become Prime Minister, as what matters most is the sincerity and cleanliness of a leader, free from corruption and power abuse.

    Ms. Agnes urges the Malaysian people not to be swayed by the "2R" issue frequently raised by PAS. She cites Singapore as an example of advancement, attributing it not to race or reflecting the religion of a leader.

    She concludes with a plea not to exploit politics to spread religious ideologies.

    Mr James of Kampung traditional Tukau Jaya

    *Broken Promises: The Plight of Tradisi Usaha Jaya Tukau Miri Residents*

    Once again, the issue of evicting villagers from Tradisi Usaha Jaya Tukau Miri has resurfaced, and those who still reside there will be taken to court for questioning. What is surprising is that despite several houses, including Mr. James's house, being outside the company's designated area, why should he follow the directive to leave his area? During the agreement session with the Land and Survey office, they were accompanied by representatives from the ADUN office, Sibuti Parliament office, police, and Parabena company for a dialogue session and agreement between Parabena and the villagers. The developer agreed to replace the land taken by Parabena with a relocation area to help the villagers rebuild their homes. However, now the villagers are asked to leave peacefully, or their houses will be demolished without mercy or compensation. The question is, why not follow the terms of the agreement during the dialogue session?

    On 05.01.2024, the villagers were summoned to court for a case involving five villagers, raising concerns as to why only five residents who have been living on Lots 187 and 188 are involved. Regardless of winning or losing, information suggests that no compensation will be given for each demolished house.

    If the villagers go to court, they will not be represented by any lawyer. If they need legal services, the cost for each family to pay the fee is RM2,000 per unit, and there are more than 90 families.

    The villagers cannot afford to pay for lawyers, so they are highly stressed by the eviction threats from the developer.

    1) Rosmah Mansor has applied for the third time for the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) to review 12 charges involving money laundering, totaling RM7 million, and 5 charges of failing to declare income to the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN). The application and representation were submitted to the AGC yesterday.

    2) The Sultan of Johor's view (the upcoming King) is that more responsibilities should be given to the King, including direct monitoring of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM) and Petronas. According to PMX, this perspective can be discussed amicably as long as it upholds the principles of constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy.

    3) The investigation into Lim Kit Siang - Putrajaya's signaling is unhealthy. The prime minister should rectify the situation.

    The police confirmed the investigation into Lim Kit Siang following a blog post on Nov 30 that touched on the issue of the appointment of the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Lim, when speaking in front of Malaysian students in the UK, said that the future Prime Minister of Malaysia may be a non-Malay. According to Baru Bian, the police should not investigate Lim Kit Siang. Because what Lim said is clearly not illegal or against the federal constitution. The pressure and investigation against Lim should stop. According to Baru Bian- the Constitution does not limit the Prime Minister of Malaysia to only Malays or Muslims. Anyone can become prime minister, as long as he is a member of parliament, has the trust of the majority of members of parliament and is approved by the Yang-Di-Pertuan Agong. There is no reason why the police should investigate Lim, clearly Lim did not break the Law. Even according to Baru Bian. In Sarawak - the Sarawak constitution also does not prevent non-Malays or non-Muslims from becoming the Premier of Sarawak. This also includes the position of TYT/Governor of Sarawak.     Regarding Lim Kit Siang's recent statement that "non-Malays can become PM," which has sparked dissatisfaction from PAS, Nixin expressed that since the Federal Constitution does not specify or emphasize that non-Malays and non-Muslims cannot become prime ministers, Lim Kit Siang's statement is not incorrect. He believes that anyone capable should be eligible to become prime minister, which is the model expected in a democratic country.

    He stated that PAS has consistently played with racial and religious issues, and whenever something threatens PAS, they find fault. This, in his view, is regressive for reform. He thinks PAS's strong reaction to Lim Kit Siang is aimed at stirring up ethnic and religious identity within their community to collectively oppose Lim Kit Siang's statement. However, he sees this as baseless and an obvious attempt to play the race and religion card (2R). It's something all Malaysians should reject.

    Regarding the situation in Sarawak, currently, Abang Jo is Malay, and Taib is Dayak-Melanau (Muslim). The next Premier and TYT (Governor) are unknown. Similarly, the constitution does not specify any particular ethnicity or religion for these positions. Nixin looks forward to seeing capable individuals, particularly from the Dayak community, becoming leaders in Sarawak.

    The representatives of nine resident associations in Marudi, Baram Tengah, Bakong, and Niah recently gathered in a meeting organized by Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) to address vital development concerns in their villages. To coincide with Human Rights Day 2023, they plan to submit a memorandum to the Sarawak and federal governments, highlighting issues such as Native Customary Rights (NCR) land encroachments, increased flooding, the need for reform in village head appointments, and limited access to basic services.

    Despite more than 60 years since Malaysia's inception, concerns persist over inadequate land tenure security and flawed leadership appointment systems. The plea is for both the Sarawak and federal governments to take these issues seriously and work towards finding resolutions.

    Jok Jau, SAM Sarawak's coordinator, emphasized the urgency of the memorandum submitted by nine communities on Human Rights Day. SAM urges the government to promptly respond to their concerns. Notably, the federal government has approved allocations in the 11th Malaysia Plan (RMK 11), and it is crucial that these funds are used effectively. Jok Jau specifically highlights the importance of using allocations for building proper roads, especially during the rainy seasons, to facilitate the transportation of children to schools in these communities.

    *Voicing Freedom: Zunar's Stand Against Repressive Laws and Actions*

    Zunar was on his way to a cartoon drawing workshop at La Promenade Mall in Kuching, Sarawak, when he was detained by Sarawak immigration at the entrance gate of Kuching Airport on December 8, 2023. He shared with RFS that he was not informed why he was detained or why his name was on the blacklist for entry into Sarawak. Despite his willingness to address any shortcomings if informed, he was not given any reason for the detention. After three hours, he was eventually allowed to enter with a three-day authorization pass. Zunar expressed hope for a government administration, including GPS, that avoids imposing restrictions without clear reasons.

    Zunar expressed satisfaction with Anwar Ibrahim's PMX administration, praising Anwar's efforts to restore the country's economy and maintain a clean, corruption-free, and stable political environment. Within a year, Malaysia saw an influx of foreign direct investments under Anwar's leadership.

    However, when questioned about the administration's failure to repeal the Sedition Act of 1984 and specific incidents such as the imprisonment of an individual waving the Israeli flag and the charges against a Cambodian citizen for making critical remarks about lazy Malays, Zunar voiced dissatisfaction. He disagreed with the imprisonment of Cambodian citizens for criticizing lazy Malays, emphasizing the right to express disagreement. Similarly, he opposed the imprisonment of individuals waving the Israeli flag, asserting the importance of freedom of expression. Zunar also disagreed with the retention of the Sedition Act, citing its weaknesses and potential for manipulation. He suggested that if a specific act is needed to protect the king from insults, the government should enact a dedicated law rather than maintaining the Sedition Act.     Siti asserts that there is nothing wrong if the individual is just expressing views about the future possibility of Malaysia establishing diplomatic relations with Israel. She questions whether someone who is a fan of the Israeli football team and uses their logo, similar to foreign country logos, would face similar consequences. She also questions why there is no action taken against those displaying the Palestinian flag. She questions the government's focus on international issues when there are unresolved problems within the country.

    *Road to Murum: Navigating Infrastructure Challenges in Sarawak*

    Two days ago, Abun Sui visited Murum with PKR Chairman Roland Engan to assess the current situation. Passing through Murum Road, which had been damaged by recent rain, it was observed that the muddy conditions had been cleared, allowing for vehicle passage. However, caution is still advised as certain sections of the road remain damaged.

    In Tegulang, they conducted an examination of the infrastructure in Long Malim and Long Wat, including roads, clinics, and schools. The Penan and Kenyah communities continue to depend on unpaved, muddy roads. A surprise visit was also made to SK Tegulang without prior notice to observe the actual conditions. Unfortunately, the observed toilets and facilities have not witnessed any improvements. Despite the federal government's announcement, led by Anwar Ibrahim, of a RM70,000 allocation for maintenance and upgrades in government schools nationwide, SK Tegulang has not received the related funds. The current status of this allocation remains uncertain. The condition of toilets in the area remains old and inadequate.

    Abun Sui discovered that there are still indigenous children without identification cards, rendering them unable to enroll in schools. Despite the Malaysian Constitution guaranteeing every child's right to education, it is disheartening that in Sarawak, children without identification cards face barriers to education. Abun Sui mentioned that he has already reported this situation to the Minister of Education.

    Anjang Aluej, Chairman of the Network of Kampung Sungai Papan

    *Land Struggles: Orang Asli Communities Resist Encroachment Logging*

    Encroachment logging activities are taking place in the Orang Asli communities of Kg Sg Papan, Kg Kensew, and Kg Janking in Grik, Perak, carried out by Majuta Sdn Bhd. The affected area, known as the Kensew ancestral domain, encompasses the Luakwang region and spans 80 hectares.

    The signboard indicates that the initial entry occurred in July 2023, marked by the construction of a logging road that traverses from Sg Papan straight to Felda FGV 1, then to Felda Tawai 2, and into the Luakwang area. The boundaries of this area connect with Kg Keyef, Ong Jemol, and Kg Cunek, forming four distinct territories.

    The company's representatives approached the communities in July, expressing the company's intention to enter the area for logging. However, the communities adamantly refused to grant permission. A second meeting took place, during which Anjang Aluej mentioned that the company would offer the communities some form of token. Despite the offer, the communities declined to accept. Subsequently, the company proposed a cash compensation of RM100.00, but once again, the communities refused.

    Despite the community's opposition, the company proceeded to enter the area with machinery. Consequently, the communities have lodged two police reports. They are currently seeking advice from COAC and PEKA.

According to Violet Yong- anything monopolistic will affect the market and consumers in the long run. Give an example of the monopoly power possessed by CMS cement. Making the price of cement and houses in Sarawak one of the most expensive in Malaysia. Although the Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Sarawak Julaihi Narawi assured the price of LPG Gas will remain at RM26.60 (the federal government's subsidy control price) Petros Niaga has become so powerful that it can choose any business partner who cannot object to any PetrOs Niaga directive. In the future, PETROS niaga has the authority to raise the price of gas barrels or charge any fees if deemed necessary. What the market needs right now is open competition. Where all parties have the same rights and powers in the sale and distribution of LPG Gas in Sarawak. YB Chong Cheing Jen and I protested at the State Assembly. But GPS has almost 100% majority. The GPS government should not bring or approve such a law in Sarawak which has a negative impact on the people of Sarawak.

The primary objective is to ensure that the lives of these individuals are not adversely affected and burdened. This inquiry becomes particularly relevant in light of Prime Minister Anwar's statement on November 3. Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, announced the phased re-targeting of diesel subsidies, specifying that this initiative would solely be implemented in the peninsula. He further clarified that Sabah and Sarawak would be excluded from this plan due to the extensive use of diesel in these states.

    Dominic Langat underscores that the proposed cancellation of diesel subsidies would pose a significant burden for users of four-wheel drives in the interior and interior regions. Notably, approximately 80% of the roads in these areas are logging routes, characterized by challenging terrains rather than smooth surfaces.     1. Hilman Idham's (Azmin Ali's team) victory in the Selangor State Assembly (DUN) for Gombak Setia will be challenged in court next Monday. Hilman won by a slim majority of 58 votes. In addition to Gombak Setia, Azmin's team also won narrowly in three other areas: Dengkil with 407 votes, Sungai Kandis with 167 votes, and Taman Medan with 30 votes. There are allegations from Hilman's side regarding vote count manipulation.

    2. "The appointment of village or community leaders should not be under the authority of State Assemblymen (YB ADUN) or Residents. The call from PKR Sarawak Chairman - Roland Engan - is for village leaders to be appointed by the people of the village themselves.

    3. PMX Anwar Ibrahim urges the acceleration of all public facility projects without any excuses. Anwar is in Sabah for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Ulu Padas hydroelectric dam project. This dam is being built to generate electricity and supply water. For Sarawak, the number of dams is already more than needed. We in Sarawak want schools, roads, bridges, and modern basic amenities.

    *Ba Pakan Chief Removed for Environmental Stance: Village Rejects Replacement*

    The Miri High Court will make a decision on 9/1/2024 for the case of judicial review against the appointment of Sakaria Padda as tribal leader for the Ba Pakan, Baram penan. A few months ago - 6 applicants, led by Julian Joy Singa - requested that there be confirmation or not of the appointment of Sakaria Padda as tribal leader.

    Previously, Kampung Ba Pakan appointed Padda Jutang (father of Sakaria Padda) as the tribal leader for the village of Ba Pakan. But Pada Jutang is an anti-logging person. When a logging company wants to log in the Ba Pakan area, Padda Jutang will oppose. Therefore, there is a need to change/replace him. So Sakaria Padda was suggested by the Miri Resident Office. Immediately after being appointed. Sakaria Padda continues to deal with logging companies that want to log in the Ba Pakan area. While the majority of the Penan Ba Pakan people are against logging. It is understood that counsel for both parties have argued in the oral hearing on 6/12/2023 - before high court judge Yang Arif Tuan Dean Wyne Daly.

    Roland Engan represented 6 applicants while Sarawak Attorney - Mr. Justin Lau represented the respondent. There are 4 respondents namely; Sakaria Padda, Miri Division Resident, Sarawak Government Secretary and Sarawak Government. Roland thinks, to solve the problem appoint a tribal leader in the future. The decision of the majority at the village level should be respected by the government or the Resident's office. The Resident's Office should accept anyone appointed at the village or longhouse level. The state government, YB and resident officials should not be involved in choosing who the tribal leader they like.

    *Logging and Dams: Abang Jo's Version of Green Economy?*

    Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg has arrived in Dubai for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) on 6 Dec. He is set to witness the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between InvestSarawak and Surbana Jurong Pte Ltd. The MOU signifies collaboration in the state's green economy initiatives, focusing on environmental sustainability.

    Regarding Abang Jo's active promotion of the green economy, Nick Kelesau expresses significant contrast in Abang Jo's ideas and actions. He states that the GPS state government led by Abang Jo is actively involved in logging and dam construction, activities that harm the environment. The so-called promotion of the green economy, according to Nick Kelesau, is actually contributing to the destruction of forests.

    He points out that the remaining forest areas are small, especially in areas like Baram Inland and Limbang Inland. Despite efforts by inland residents to protect the forests and demarcate areas for preservation, active logging companies are still present, attempting to persuade village chiefs to allow them access for logging. The conditions offered include money, housing construction, road development, and other incentives to entice village chiefs to permit logging in the area.

    These situations have been ongoing, but there is no visible government intervention to stop them. Nick Kelesau mentions that opinions among inland villagers regarding dam construction vary. Some are deceived by the government's sweet words, believing that the construction of dams will bring roads, job opportunities, and new longhouses. However, Nick advises those in favor of dam construction to visit the resettlement areas in Murum and Bakun to see if the future is as they imagined.

    *Towards Permanence: Resolving Land Allocation Issues in Kampung Wawasan*

    On December 6th, Remould Siew, together with Tr. Edy and a few others, visited the Jutamas Oil Palm plantation company to further discuss their situation. The company has agreed to allocate a lot for them to stay in the areas where their respective houses and a longhouse, consisting of 18 families (including 3 individual houses) in Kampung Wawasan, batu niah, were built prior to the implementation of the oil palm plantations. The community has occupied the area since 90s, and now they are allowed to stay there permanently. The government has also contributed funds to the community to build the longhouse. The Penghulu and their State Assemblyman (YB) made efforts to issue a letter to the company.

    One crucial aspect of today's meeting was to exclude the community from the company's PL (Plantation License) or to provide the community with enough surrounding compound called "Payong Rumah." The manager agreed to this condition, and he mentioned that he would bring the letter to their superior for approval. Both parties aimed to resolve the situation in a win-win manner. The area is not far from the school and clinic. However, the current issue lies in the poor condition of the access road to the settlement.

    *Concerns about the mandatory use of Malay arising in Sarawak*

    Mr. Nicol has expressed his views on the issue of the Malay language, which has become a hot topic on social media following the statement by the Minister of Home Affairs that those who are not proficient in the Malay language will not receive services.

    Mr. Nicol emphasizes that if the Malay language is obligatory according to the constitution, he questions how this aligns with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), which has not been implemented for Sabah and Sarawak for a long time. The people of Sarawak do not consider Malay as the primary language in Sarawak because English is regarded as prioritized. Moreover, in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN), English can be freely used.

    It is disappointing if Malayan culture were to spread to Sarawak.

    1. Petros Niaga monopolizes the LPG Gas business in Sarawak. In the long term business monopoly is not good for the people of Sarawak. The Sarawak government suddenly stopped MyGAC's business license effective December 1, 2023. Caused all MyGaz retailers and distributors to be out of a job. Meanwhile Yb Violet Yong in a press conference today informed that all 19 LPG distributors in Sarawak had not been contacted by Petros Niaga before.

    2. The National Registration Department should take an extraordinary approach to solve the citizenship problem of Sarawak residents. Not only adding JPN staff but the ability to communicate in various languages is also required. This is to help rural residents who are not fluent in Malay.

    *Environmental Impact and Disrupted Lives: Murum Penan's Plight Post-Dam Construction*

    Recently, heavy rain led to the road entering the Murum resettlement area being cut off. According to a report from the RFS yesterday, the logging company Shin Yang will undertake the task of repairing the road. The Murum Penan community expressed uncertainty about Shin Yang's intentions, while Abun Sui stated that there has been no sign of repair work starting.

    This road cutoff incident once again brings to light the problems faced by the Murum Penan. It is understood that the state government, during the construction of the Murum dam, promised assistance to the affected communities, including a monthly allowance of 250 Malaysian Ringgit per household. However, this support was halted after 2018.

    Abun pointed out that the environment in the Murum Penan resettlement area is not as abundant as before, lacking the forests and rivers for hunting and abundant resources for sustenance. Despite the diminished living environment, the standard of living for the Murum Penan has not improved, and they still rely on subsidies promised by the government. He mentioned that the Murum Penan have raised this issue, indicating that they still require assistance.

    He emphasized that dams within the state of Sarawak are projects of the state government. If there are any issues of exploitation, the state government must address them. However, he also stressed that he would bring up relevant issues in parliament and with the relevant ministers to prevent the rights of the people of Sarawak from being compromised.

    *Rural Rights: MyKad Achievements in Lawas*

    Agnes comes from Lawas. She focuses full time on helping the residents of Lawas who do not have Mykad/citizenship. Especially poor people in rural areas.

    Today Agnes is happy because the 4 children of the late Lina Samuel got Maykad. After years of struggle. The late Lina Samuel is a descendant of Lun Bawang, who suffered from stage 4 cancer. She died in April 2023. Her MYkad was confiscated by JPN because she was allegedly not a citizen. she appealed to JPN. Finally she was given a temporary MYkad to enable to commute for cancer treatment (Lawas - Miri - Lawas).

    Lina Samuel's case was referred to the Indonesian embassy. Indonesia confirms that Lina is not a citizen of the Republic. Making Malaysia no choice to give Malaysian citizenship to the late Lina Samuel. With that confirmation, her children have the right to have Mykad. In addition to praising the commitment of the ministers and administration of the unity government. Agnes thought, someone who is honest and sincere will be able to help launch the MYkad application process.

    She said she will always ask for updates related to the applications of those she help. She will provide supporting documents when requested and she will answer all difficulties when questioned by the NRD. This helps speed up the application process. The NRD should also know that rural residents do not have money to go to the NRD office regularly, the phone service in the interior is so bad and the elderly in the interior do not speak Malay fluently and do not know how to answer questions in Malay. JPN officials should understand all these problems and appoint competent officials.

    The recent incidents involving individuals facing reprimands from Road Transport Department (RTD) officers and alleged mistreatment at the Johor UTC due to a lack of Bahasa Melayu proficiency have ignited a debate. Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail emphasizes that proficiency in the national language is a non-negotiable requirement under the Federal Constitution, making individuals ineligible for services if they cannot understand Bahasa Melayu. This assertion has sparked an active debate on social media platforms.

    Romuald Siew from Tahabas expresses disappointment that non-Malay-speaking citizens may face difficulties accessing services at government agency counters in the absence of Bahasa Malaysia proficiency. Siew advocates for Malaysia to embody tolerance and harmony.

    Addressing the potential implementation of a mandatory Bahasa Malaysia speaking system, it is suggested that such a change should not be abrupt. Sufficient time should be provided for people to attain proficiency in the national language.

    In the context of Sarawak, where Bahasa Malaysia is not the lingua franca, there is an argument against adopting the language system practiced in Malaya.

    *Belaga-Murum Road Repaired by Logging Company: Questions Arise*

    Gereng Jadum gave the latest report regarding Landslides that buried and cut the Belaga-Murum road at KM17. Today is exactly 10 days since the incident.

    According to Gereng, the road has been passable, but the repair work is still ongoing. Surprisingly, it was not the Public Works Department that carried out the repair work. But on the other hand Shin Yang SY Logging Company. Perhaps Shin Yang SY feels responsible for repairing the road, because they are the biggest contributors to the damage to the road. Or Shin Yang SY- need to fix the road as soon as possible because they need to bring the logs and oil palm fruits immediately to the factory for processing.

    Gereng realized that there are 5 people's representatives in the Belaga area. One Member of Parliament (Wilson Ugak MP for Hulu Rajang GPS) 2 Assemblymen - Liwan Lagang and Chuck Pai Ugon (GPS) and 2 Senators. YB Senator Abun Sui (PKR) and YB Senator Micheal Mujah Lihan (GPS-UN) respectively. However, until now the problem of Murum pens still cannot be overcome.

    At the end of 2013, Penan Murum was relocated to Tegulang and Metalun. Promised assistance of RM850 per month until the results of the agricultural SKIMS that are being worked on give returns to the displaced Penan people. 6 years ago (2017) assistance of RM850 for a family was stopped, without reason and the promised agricultural scheme did not work. I request these 5 YBs to speak up for the Penan Murum people. We are currently working as a laborer in a nearby oil palm plantation with a salary of RM1500 per month. This is just enough to buy the basic necessities to continue living. We need the promised help of RM850 per family and we want the agriculture and animal husbandry scheme. The construction of dams has completely destroyed our forests and lives.

Nick mentioned that many inland Penan people often inquire about how to apply for the Malaysian identity card (MyKad). Frequently, even when the father possesses a MyKad, the children face challenges in obtaining one. Approval conditions seem unclear, yet the required documents are numerous. Nick pointed out that Penan individuals encounter issues with officials citing incomplete documentation during the MyKad application process. He has repeatedly reminded the Penan community to prepare thorough documentation, including copies of family members' MyKads, a letter from the village chief, and the chief's MyKad copy. Despite some documents not being explicitly required, when Penan individuals submit them in urban areas, they are informed of insufficient documentation, hindering their applications. Nick acknowledges the government's attention through the establishment of a special committee for inland areas, reducing the challenges for many applicants. However, he urges village chiefs to cooperate by compiling a list of residents without MyKads and assisting them in preparing documents so that the special committee can efficiently handle applications upon arrival, avoiding unnecessary trips.
