    1. Najib Razak received very special treatment in prison. Ustaz Wan Ji Wan Hussin who has just been released from Kajang prison (the prison where Najib was placed) told. Several times bumped into and caught a glimpse of Najib. Najib does not wear prison clothes and is free to move anywhere. He is like living in his own house. Several parties have requested an explanation from the prison department and the interior ministry. If Najib is free to move around in prison. So the motive of imprisonment to convert Najib will not be achieved. Najib is getting bigger when he is given a half amnesty and even his lawyer once said that Najib is innocent and does not need to go to jail, even for a day.

    2. Jana Wibawa case- Former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin requested a court review of the decision to cancel his release. On February 28, the appeals court overturned Muhyiddin's release and release when it reinstated charges of abuse of power against him linked to the Jana Wibawa program.

    3. The Premier of Sarawak claimed that PADU asked for too much personal information of the people. Therefore it causes public concern. According to Iswardy, the data requested by PADU is general information. In fact, the Sarawak/GPS government is worried that the wealth of their cronies will be exposed and fear that the real poverty data of Sarawak will be known. If this happens-the resurrection of the poor people will punish the GPS.

    -------------------------

    Iswardy Morni. Sarawak political analyst

*Public Unconcerned with Proper Registration, But GPS Cronies Fear Property Exposure*

Sarawak Premier Johari Openg said that the information requested by PADU was too detailed to cause public concern. That is why the Sarawak government has requested that the registration of PADU in Sarawak be postponed.

Iswardy questioned Johari's statement that PADU only asked for 9 basic information, namely basic information of the individual, household, address, job, education, income, commitment, assistance and finally the certificate. Padu asks for individual bank acc no so that cash aid can be credited directly to the aid recipient's account.

The government aid scheme has also asked for the acc number of the recipient. If this is questioned by the Sarawak government, SarawakPay also requests the same information. Why does the Sarawak government agree with SarawakPay's actions but oppose PADU?

In addition, according to Iswardy, PADU data is more comprehensive to determine if the aid recipient is really eligible. All this time with the old government system and data. There are rich individuals who receive government subsidies, on the other hand, many poor people do not get help. Whatever the actions of the Sarawak government. PADU registration in Sarawak is still encouraging and iswardy urges the public to register with PADU in the remaining 3 days. The Sarawak government should not worry too much because the representative of the Sarawak government/GPS is in the ministry of economy. Hanifah Hajar Taib is the deputy minister of economy. But GPS's concern is actually exposing the unusually large number of poor people in Sarawak.

The public is not worried about registering properly, only GPS cronies are worried about their property information being exposed. Even though they are rich, they still want to enjoy government subsidies.

    Mr. Laeng from Uma Akeh

*Costly Misstep: GPS Water Project Fails to Deliver Clean Water*

Residents of Long Suling longhouse are celebrating the completion of their clean water supply project. Spearheaded by Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, the initiative received strong support from the state government, which allocated RM920,031 for the project's success. This project, which began in 2019, has not only benefitted Long Suling but has also improved water access in neighboring areas such as Kampung Long Puak, Uma Akeh, SK St Pius, Long Sayan, Long Latei, and Long Watt.

However, this success stands in contrast to Laeng's experience with a previous water project led by GPS two years ago. Laeng, from Uma Akeh criticized the project, which cost 500K, as a waste of public funds. He argued that the project's budget was excessive, considering that a 3 km pipeline from a mountain water source could have been more cost-effective with different materials. The water quality from the GPS project was poor, resembling Milo even during dry seasons. This substandard water quality also led to laundry issues, as white clothes would turn yellow when washed with the dirty water.

In contrast, before the GPS project, the longhouse had a water system funded by the federal government, which the villagers had successfully managed themselves. Despite the old pipes being in need of replacement, the water was clear, and the villagers were satisfied. The contrast between these two projects highlights the importance of effective resource allocation and community involvement in infrastructure projects.

Sugumaran of PSM cum chairman of Poultry Breeders Association

*Buffalo Breeders Association Protests Detention of Cattle by Sime Darby's Kemuning Estate*

In a recent demonstration in front of the Kuala Kangsar City Council, the Buffalo Breeders Association voiced their protest against the detention of six cattle by the oil palm plantation of Kemuning Estate, owned by Sime Darby. These cattle belong to former estate workers, who are demanding fair treatment and housing.

The breeders allege that during a meeting organized by Sime Darby on February 28 in Sg Siput, involving four estates and 20 breeders, the plantation claimed to have zero cattle. However, the cattle in question are known to belong to former estate workers who have been in the area for three generations.

In the past, the companies encouraged these workers to raise cattle for additional income. This practice was supported by the government in the 1970s, as evidenced by the "green book" agreements between workers and companies. Despite this history, the workers were given only three months to clear their cattle, with restrictions on movement imposed in subsequent months.

The workers are now puzzled as to how their cattle ended up in the plantation's possession. The company is demanding RM1500 for each cattle, a sum the former workers, mostly B40 families, consider excessive. They are calling for the charges to be dropped, citing their longstanding contributions to the area's economy.

    1. The issue of socks with the word allah - The police ask the public to calm down and stop provocation. Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director- Mohd Shuhaily Zain said. The current situation is quite hot and tense. It is time for all parties to "Stand down" because all actions have been and are being taken by the authorities.

    2. Constitutional amendments related to citizenship issues. Making it even more difficult for the children of the indigenous people of the peninsula and the people of Sabah/Sarawak to obtain citizenship. Many natives even old still do not have citizenship/identification card. Thus when they marry a foreigner. Of course it is difficult for their children to get citizenship status. While they themselves have applied dozens of times for citizenship but were unsuccessful. This is their newborn child.

    3. The tactic of misusing diesel using earth moving lorries was exposed in Kuching. With information and complaints from the public - the police managed to arrest and impound a lorry loaded with diesel. Which is believed to be subsidized diesel. The truck had a lot of oil leakage which attracted the attention of road users on Jalan Kulas, Satok-Kuching. The public is asked to report any malversation of subsidized diesel.

Shaq Koyok, artist and activist from the Temuan tribe

*Identity Struggles: Shaq Koyok's Fight for Recognition*

Shaq Koyok comes from the village of Pulau Kempas in Selangor and has not had an identity card since birth. The government is proposing to amend Section (a) Part 2, Second Schedule of the federal constitution to no longer automatically grant citizenship to foreigners residing in the country.

Currently, anyone born in Malaysia with at least one parent who is a Malaysian citizen or a permanent resident in Malaysia automatically receives citizenship. The government plans to remove the term "permanent resident."

For Shaq, this proposed amendment is cruel and inhumane, as it would make our current difficult situation even more challenging. Currently, many indigenous people in Sabah, Sarawak, and the peninsula do not have identity cards or citizenship, which is a failure of the government. If a stateless native marries a foreigner, what will happen to their children's fate?

Shaq suggests that the government first solve the citizenship problem among the natives of the peninsula, Sabah, and Sarawak. For a long time, JAKOA (the Department of Aboriginal Affairs) has forbidden raising the issue of the lack of identity cards among indigenous people to avoid embarrassing the government.

However, Shaq, as an indigenous child without an identity card, has been denied the right to receive any help. During school, Shaq did not receive any government assistance due to not having an identity card. Shaq believes there is no need for this amendment. Instead, the government should focus on solving the citizenship problem among Malaysians.

Dr Micheal Teo, ex MP of Miri

    *Supporting PADU: Enhancing Aid Accessibility*

Dr. Teo doesn't understand why GPS keeps promoting the negativity of PADU. He stated that it is a system that allows the government to provide fair and comprehensive assistance to anyone in need.

He said that Anwar has always been people-oriented, putting the people first, so the introduction of PADU is to make the assistance system more convenient.

He urged the people of Sarawak to register for PADU so that they can receive support from the government promptly when assistance is distributed, rather than having to appeal and apply later.

    ---------------------

    (call-in) Mr. Robert from Bintulu

*GPS's Arrogance: Hindering Government Aid to the Poor*

Mr Robert feels angry about the arrogant attitude of GPS Sarawak which is hindering the poor from registering for PADU. Why should they incite the people when the YBs are already rich and surely afraid of their personal data being known by the government and unable to avoid paying taxes?

It is truly disappointing for a party that is part of the United Government not to respect the government system itself.

Currently, GPS is not focusing on eradicating poverty in Sarawak, and GPS has failed to address the issue of poverty in Sarawak. So why should they hinder the government from helping the people?

In Bintulu, almost every coffee shop is talking about the PADU issue, so Mr. Robert feels compelled to express his disappointment with GPS for oppressing the people by preventing the poor from being assisted by the MADANI government.

Nora Kantin, villager from Kampung Angkeh Gua Musang

*Orang Asli Group Seeks PM's Intervention Over Gua Musang Dam Project*

The Jaringan Kampung Orang Asli Kelantan (JKOAK) intends to bring up issues related to the hydroelectric dam project in Gua Musang to the attention of the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

This step is planned after claiming to have received information that the project was approved silently several months after its cancellation was proposed by the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment, and Climate Change Malaysia (MESTECC) in 2019.

The villagers were disappointed with the announced cancellation as the project had commenced in March last year and had now reached 40 percent of the construction phase.

Nora said that the community want the federal government to immediately investigate the approval of this project to the grassroots. Those mega projects like this have the potential to become a source for certain parties to gain profits and personal benefits.

His statement was read by a representative of JKOAK, who is also the Chief of the Indigenous Land of Pos Simpor, Mohd Syafiq Dendi, at a press conference at the Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) office in Petaling Jaya today.

With the lead of JKOAK, Nora said they will also bring the matter to the MACC as they alleged that there are individuals seeking to profit from the project.

The dam involves a large cost, the future of the people, and serious effects on the environment, the way of life of the Orang Asli, and the destruction of the early civilization of the Orang Asli.

Dennis Along, Social and environmental activist

*GPS tried to confuse the people regarding Cascading Dam, Carbon Trading and PADU*

Dennis is on his way to the villages of Tutoh and Tinjar in Baram parliament. In an effort to provide information to the villagers regarding some of the latest issues. But according to Dennis in the many issues raised - there are 3 issues that are of concern and confuse rural residents. That is the issue of carbon trading, cascading dams and PADU. Rural residents are confused about whether or not to support carbon trading and whether they will benefit. In the law passed in the Sarawak State Assembly related to carbon trading. Ordinary people will not be paid if their land is used. PL will be issued by the state government to large companies. Just like in the matter of palm oil plantations and logging. But in this matter GPS sings that carbon trading will protect the environment and the people will be able to benefit. Related to Cascading dams GPS/Sarawak government said that cascading dams are not building dams or drowning rivers and villages. It is to build a waterfall that will be a tourist attraction, increase oxygen in the river and prevent the breeding of crocodiles. The people were persuaded to agree that their village and land be used for the cascading Dam. For registration and updating PADU. GPS acted aggressively by stopping all PADU registrants in Sarawak on the grounds of data security and not wanting their property ownership to be exposed. Dennis explained that only people who have extraordinary wealth that cannot explain their wealth are the only ones who bother to register with PADU. The failure of the people of Sarawak to understand the real issues of carbon trading, cascading dams and PADU. Showing that GPS failed to provide real information to help the people of Sarawak. GPS wants the Sarawak government to get a lot of money but the people remain poor - Dennis Along.

    Madam Agnes from Dijih

*Broken Promises: Decades Without Clean Water in Dijih Mukah*

Madam Agnes shared the issue of her community in Dijih Mukah facing insufficient water supply during the dry season.

She said that residents of longhouses have to go down to the river to bathe even though the river is polluted with waste from the Rimbunan Hijau palm oil mill, and the river water smells. She is disappointed that their longhouses have never had a water treatment supply from the government for decades.

Every election campaign, every candidate promises to connect clean water, but it's all empty promises. Along the road to Madam Agnes's longhouse, there are 17 longhouses facing the same fate of not having clean water supply, and the entire community has to buy drinking water from the market every day. But how long must they use their own money to buy drinking water when many cannot afford it due to low income?

    ------------------------

Mr. Dee, a firefighter from Miri

*Miri's Air Quality Plunges: Peat Fires Engulf 21 Hectares*

The air quality in Miri, Sarawak, has significantly deteriorated due to peat fires within the district, resulting in fog-like conditions with strong odors. The fire and rescue department has advised the public, especially those with respiratory conditions, to stay indoors.

Approximately 21 hectares of peatland and forest have already been destroyed in the blaze, which is expected to spread further.

Mr. Dee, a firefighter from Miri, reported that a fire in Sg Adong, covering an area of over 20 hectares, is currently being actively extinguished. According to Mr. Dee, the land is owned by the company Naim. However, the cause of the fire has not been identified yet, as the dry season makes it easy for some areas to catch fire. Nevertheless, it appears suspicious that the fire was planned for future plantation opening, especially since only the Naim zone is affected by the fire.

    1. What is the trick of the Sarawak Government to delay the registration of PADU in Sarawak. Are you afraid of the revelation that the high poverty rate in Sarawak shows the failure of GPS to govern Sarawak. Or with the success of PADU, the people of Sarawak will benefit and support Anwar's administration and GPS will lose the election? YB Rafizi - the economy minister will meet the GPS government this week.

    Soleman, Residents of West Kalimantan

*Daughter Deceived into Work in Kuching: Father's Journey from Kalimantan to Rescue*

Soleman is from West Kalimantan, his journey to Kuching, Sarawak, began with a desperate quest to find his missing daughter, Sesilia Putri. His heart heavy with worry, he turned to his friend, Peter John Jaban, for help.

Soleman's search for his daughter started with a woman named Sendi, whom he had only known from Balai Ringin. Sendi had promised Sesilia a job at a coffee shop or restaurant in Kuching, with a monthly salary of RM1,500, accommodation, and meals provided. However, after arriving in Kuching, Sendi handed Sesilia over to an agent named Roni, who confiscated her passport and phone.

Sesilia managed to hide another phone and contacted her father, revealing that she was forced to work long hours as a housemaid without pay for three months, as her salary had been taken by the agent. She also expressed fear of working without a permit.

With this information in hand, Soleman bravely made a police report, detailing the deception and exploitation his daughter had faced. He provided crucial information, including the contact numbers of the agents involved, in the hope that the authorities would investigate and take action.

Soleman's determination to save his daughter from this unjust situation led him to Kuching, Sarawak, armed with his police report and a fervent hope for justice.

    ------------------

Peter John Jaban, Deputy president of the Global Human Right Federation (GHRF)

*Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery: The Dark Reality for Migrant Workers in Sarawak*

Peter reports that cases like those reported by Soleman often occur in Sarawak. Indonesian workers are promised high wages with attractive jobs in Sarawak Malaysia, but in the end they were sold from one agent to another. What GHRF can do is report the case to the police, immigration and even the Indonesian consulate in Kuching.

-For us at GHRF this is a case of manipulation of migrant workers, human trafficking and modern slavery. It is wrong in the law. I remind Indonesian workers who want to work in Malaysia to check with the consulate to ensure a valid employment agent. All personal documents are complete and have a work permit. Never come to work in Malaysia using a social visit pass. I will help Soleman to trace and bring his daughter back to Indonesia. - Said Peter John.

    ------------------

Wendy Dara, Sintang West Kalimantan Indonesia

*An Indonesian worker who was cheated by a fake employment agency in Sarawak*

Wendy Dara comes from Sintang, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. She entered Sarawak three weeks ago to work in a restaurant in the city of Kuching, with a starting salary of RM1500. An employee agent named Cindy is responsible for placing several employees at different job locations. A problem arose for Wendy Dara when she was not eligible to work in a restaurant because she did not have a passport. While at the beginning when brought in it was said that it was not necessary to use a passport and work permit to work in Sarawak, Malaysia. Then this agent placed Wendy in several workplaces such as taking care of the elderly, taking care of children, or becoming a social worker. But the job that was offered was not what was promised at the beginning. Some conditions are imposed by the agent, such as not being able to use the telephone, not being able to hold cash (salary directly credited to the account), and having to work for at least 2 years before being allowed to go home.

    - I realize that I have been cheated by some employment agents based in Sarawak. I'm stuck looking for a way to return to Sintang, Indonesia because I don't have a passport – Wendy Dara said.

    ------------------

Sivaranjani Manickam, National Workers Bureau Coordinator, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM)

*Voices of the Vulnerable: Bangladeshi Workers Speak Out Against Exploitation*

Recently, three Bangladeshi workers were arrested last Friday under the pretense of a quarrel among themselves. However, the real issue stems from the exploitation of over 160 workers brought to Malaysia last October by Beak Construction Company. These workers were promised jobs, salaries, and accommodation, but to date, they have received none of these. Instead, they have been living in terrible conditions for the past seven months, with inadequate food and overcrowded accommodations.

Upon realizing their predicament, the workers contacted PSM and other NGOs for help. PSM assisted around 50 workers in lodging a police report against the employer who was holding their passports. They also sought assistance from the Labour Department to claim their unpaid salaries.

In an attempt to suppress the workers and deter them from pursuing their rights, the employer orchestrated a confrontation among the workers and then surrendered three of them to the police. This action was intended to intimidate the remaining workers.

It is crucial to note that withholding workers' passports is illegal under the Immigration Act and constitutes a criminal offense. Despite PSM lodging a police report on 12 March, the employer has not been arrested, highlighting a double standard in law enforcement.

PSM urges the authorities to release the three Bangladeshi workers, as they have no legitimate case against them. The government must take proactive measures to protect vulnerable migrant workers and hold irresponsible employers accountable. This includes setting up a task force to address issues of exploitation and abuse of migrant workers.

    ------------------

    Mr. Nichol from Kuching

*The PADU Puzzle: GPS Government's Rejection and Its Impact on Sarawakians*

Mr. Nichol explained that it is detrimental to every citizen if they do not want to register with PADU. Why should they be afraid to fill it in if they really want to receive government assistance?

He has tried to convince many people not to hesitate about PADU. The Sarawak government does not instruct its people to fill out PADU because they have things they are hiding from the federal government.

Lately, the people have been frightened by GPS that the information in PADU is like exposing themselves, but Mr. Nichol firmly states that GPS actually does not want it to be known that all the funds from the federa government have not really been distributed to the people, meaning that GPS has been misusing the federal government's finances. Indeed, GPS members will not fill out PADU because they are afraid their wealth will be known. The MADANI government is doing its utmost to help the people, but GPS's instigation has frightened the people.

    3. Today GPS Sarawak expressed its open objection to the implementation of the Main Database System (PADU). According to Minister Karim Rahman Hamzah. Padu violates privacy, data security and exposes the information of registered citizens. In fact, GPS is worried about their failure to govern Sarawak to the extent that the majority of Sarawak residents are still poor. PADU exposes the hypocracy of GPS. According to the economy minister. There is no compulsion to register with PADU but don't anger the government if your name falls off the list of aid recipients.

    ----------------------

Iswardy Morni, Activist and Sarawak political analyst

*Unveiling Sarawak's Poverty: The GPS Objection to PADU*

Today, Sarawak's political leaders began protesting the Main Data Base System (PADU) launched by PMX Anwar Ibrahim at the beginning of January 2024.

According to Sarawak's tourism, creative industries and performing arts minister - Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah - When you register in the integrated system, this means you are exposing yourself.

The GPS government requested that PADU be reviewed, and changes made. Karim mentioned that the government should respect the privacy of the people and there is no need to develop PADU because there is already ekasih data. Today, an official memo from Sri Aman Residents asking for PADU registration to be stopped in the entire Sri Aman Division went viral on social media. YBs GPS Sarawak in their respective whatsapp groups asked the people not to register with PADU.

For Iswardy, the real reason GPS objected to PADU was because they did not want Sarawak's real poverty data to be exposed. The latest data in PADU shows that many Sarawakians are registering. Many poor people are registered and many will get government assistance. In terms of "people's welfare" this is good, but GPS leaders are worried that their weaknesses in governing the state of Sarawak all this time will be exposed. With the high revenue and budget, why are there so many poor people in Sarawak?

Regarding data security, the Sarawak government pioneered several initiatives such as SarawakPay, Kenyalang GoldCad and Ekasih, all these platforms store the data of Sarawak residents. In fact it is operated by a third party/private. Why is data security not an issue? Is it because it is run by the Sarawak state government?

Iswardy ask the Sarawak government to have the courage to face reality, that the majority of the people of Sarawak are poor and deserve help. Don't interpret everything through political and election perspectives only.

    ----------------------

Thomas Jalong, environmental activist from Ulu Baram

*The Environmental Crime Surge: Addressing Illegal Logging*

Minister of Natural Resources and Sustainable Environment, Nik Nazmi, stated in parliament that environmental crimes in court appeared to be increasing, with 409 cases last year compared to 289 cases in 2019. He listed several issues, including illegal logging, which has various impacts.

Thomas believes that encroachment into the forest is a crime, meaning that whoever encroaches into the forest, especially companies or individuals, regardless of whether it is a reserve forest or community-protected forest, is committing a crime according to the Forest Ordinance. Illegal logging should not be conducted in these areas without consultation or consent from the community. Indigenous people have long understood the importance of forests to our livelihoods. It is only now that we are hearing about the impacts of climate change and other negative effects, such as the lack of important natural resources to sustain our lives. Indigenous people know how to manage the forest sustainably. However, enforcement or state governments often do not provide legal support for the practices of indigenous people who want to continue protecting forest areas that are crucial not only for the local community but also for the state and global purposes.

Thomas said that, with this, they wish to emphasize that when they are protecting our forests, they should not be labeled as anti-development. In fact, who is truly anti-development? Those who are destroying the forests are the ones against development.

Abun Sui, Senator of PKR Sarawak

*Lack of GPS Government Aid in Flood-Affected Sarawak Villages*

Abun Sui raised concerns about the lack of government aid to two remote villages in Sarawak, despite being repeatedly hit by floods this year. He highlighted that villages like Long Busang and Long Kajang in Belaga, Sarawak, have not received flood assistance, as their representatives have complained. Abun urged the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) and the Social Welfare Department to address this issue promptly and provide assistance to the affected villages.

Abun Sui also urged that the GPS government would shoulder its responsibility and not solely rely on the federal government because the Sarawak state government itself has more than enough financial resources to assist its own people.

Oscar Ling, DAP MP of Sibu

*Balancing Development: Oscar Ling Calls for Fair Allocation of Resources by GPS goverment*

Sibu MP Oscar Ling Service Centre is organizing a special subsidised food programme near SK Rantau Panjang on March 23, from 8:30 am to 10:30 am. A total of 200 packs of subsidised food items will be available for RM10 per set. Each set includes instant noodles, biscuits, flour, 2kg of white rice, sugar, and a packet of cooking oil.

According to Ling, each household is limited to one set, and distribution will be on a first-come-first-served basis. This programme is a joint initiative with the Federal Agricultural Marketing Agency (Fama) and aims to help reduce the financial burden on the people. Ling encourages the public to come early to enjoy discounts and attractive promotions.

Oscar Ling stated that the economic downturn is not just a problem in Malaysia, but a global issue. Therefore, the monthly provision of aid is part of the support program in line with the Madani government to help people cope with the difficulties of rising prices.

However, Oscar Ling pointed out that despite GPS's annual development budget reaching billions, the current focus is only on areas like Kuching, Miri, and Bintulu. On the contrary, other areas such as Sibu, Kapit, and Kenowit are marginalized and also need the state government's focus and development.

He noted that many outskirts of towns are facing the plight of being ignored, which has led to a continuous decline in economic development in these areas, making life increasingly difficult for the people there. Therefore, he urged the state government to pay attention to the welfare of all Sarawakians and to distribute development opportunities and resources evenly across the state to achieve balanced development.

A company shortlisted for a government immigration system contract. According to Isham, government contracts worth more than RM50 million must go through the finance ministry, where Anwar is the minister, and Immigration under the Ministry of Home Affairs, whose minister is Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Both of these ministers are from the PKR. For the record, PMX Anwar Ibrahim's administration is actively cleaning Malaysia from corruption and abuse of power.

    Paul Wan from Long Lama

*Decades-Long Issue: Why is Sarawak Spending Money on Container Clinics?*

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has approved RM951,200 to purchase and modify high cube containers for use as an interim clinic in Long Lama, Baram. In a written reply to a question raised by Baram MP Datuk Anyi Ngau in the Parliament recently, MoH said that the project is expected to take at least six months to be completed and will kick off as soon as the process to acquire the site is completed.

This decision comes after longstanding issues with the clinic's facilities, dating back 20 to 30 years. Initially, the clinic was a wooden structure on the riverbank, but it has since fallen into disrepair, with the old site eroded and abandoned.

Paul Wan from Long Lama comment that, despite the need for repairs, the old clinic site has remained untouched. Instead, the clinic was relocated across the river, where only staff quarters were built, leaving the community without a proper clinic. For the past five years, the Long Lama clinic has been operating out of the Long Lama Community Hall, causing inconvenience during events held there.

The Sarawak government has previously expressed self-reliance, yet the lack of action on the clinic issue raises questions. The old clinic, established in the 1960s-80s, should have been upgraded to a hospital, given Long Lama's importance as the central area of Baram. The area relies heavily on the old road, and with the completion of the Sabah/Sarawak link road, Long Lama is set to become a central point between the two states.

However, instead of addressing these pressing needs, the government's focus seems misplaced. There are concerns that the decision to use containers for the clinic is a temporary solution, indicating a lack of long-term planning. Furthermore, plans to build a DAM to control river flow raise suspicions of land grabbing under the guise of development.

Paul emphasize that, The people of Sarawak deserve better, and it is time for action to address these longstanding issues.

Voon Lee Shan, President of Bumi Kenyalang Party (PBK)

*Judicial Review Sought for Appointment of Sarawak TYT*

On 17 March 2024, the Majority (238 in favor/1 against) of the members of the Malaysian Bar agreed that a judicial review be filed against the reduction of former prime minister Najib Razak's sentence. For Voon- it is clear that Malaysia is a country of "constitutional kings" where the king has no absolute power. When this matter is brought to court, the public will know how the Board of Pardons advised His Majesty the King/King and whether His Majesty the King/King followed their advice.

Basically, the people need to be informed that the decision-making process is transparent and institutionalized.

Likewise with the appointment of the new TYT Sarawak - Voon think that there is a violation of the Sarawak constitution. According to the Sarawak constitution, the proposal of the TYT candidate should be brought in the Sarawak state assembly meeting first. After being approved, it is presented to the Agong/King.

But in the case of the appointment of TYT Sarawak Tun Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, there was no discussion in the Sarawak State Assembly and the name of the prospective TYT was sent directly to the Agong. In this matter, Voon think that Sarawak Advocates Association should dare to use judicial review and then correct past mistakes. While the appointment of senators from Sarawak will be discussed in the Sarawak state assembly first. This is also a much more important post like TYT.

    Nick Kelesau, Penan Activist

*Empowering Penan Unity: Addressing Internal Regulations and Rights*

Dayak Daily reported that the Penan village of Sedin Laeng in Data Bila has established rules to regulate visits to a tourism attraction in Ulu Baram, citing them as part of their local Penan rights.

Nick Kelesau commented on a statement by Daud Sedin from Data Bila, which he found concerning for the Penan community. Daud Sedin suggested that even if the Agong were to visit the Tekiwit waterfall, a fee would be required. This approach of creating and enforcing their own regulations appears to be aimed at personal benefit, as it involves charging fees to all tourists wishing to visit the Tekiwit waterfall. It is important to note that Daud Sedin cannot unilaterally create laws, and it is essential to consider the well-being of all community members. Such actions may give the impression of living without governance. It would be more beneficial for the Penan community to make decisions that align with the common good, ensuring unity among all Penan, including the Penan or Punan, in the future.

    1. redelineation of the Sarawak state assembly constituencies. Action Malaysia proposes the addition of 11 new state assembly seats, making the total number of seats 93. For now, GPS is still silent and has not proposed anything to the EC. TIndak Malaysia provides a google form for the public to jointly propose a new demarcation area. The last time the Sarawak state assembly area was demarcated was in 2015.

    2. Landslide to the penan settlement area in Sungai Linau, Belaga. After 8 days GPS failed to help. Ngang Kuja, Residents of Penan Long Tanyit

*Lost Contact for 8 Days Due to Road Broken, Rescued by NGO, Not Government Authorities*

Ngang Kuja reported that today marks 8 days since the Penan people in the Linau River (Murum State Assembly) have lost contact with the outside world - due to landslides, the road to the 5 Penan settlements in the Linau Belaga River is impassable.

The penan settlements affected are Lusong Laku, Long Kajang, Long Lidem, Long Abit and Long Tanyit. More than 1000 Penan residents live in this area. In this area there is also a school and a health clinic.

Ngang Kuja was wondering why there is no road repair work by the government. Thankfully today the road can be passed, and it is not from government and YBs, but was repaired by an NGO- ASAP MOTOR. This is a four-wheel drive vehicle club based in Bakun Sungai Asap.

He said that, the big problem for them penan in linau is the road of communication. The log road they use now is a log road built by Samling. This road has been abandoned because the logs have run out. The Shin Yang logging company operates in the upper reaches of the Linau river, but not through the penan village.

Ngang appeal to PMX and Premier Abang Johari, most importantly, give them paved roads, electricity supply, clean water and telecommunication. After this everything is there, provide them modern agriculture, clinics and schools. As now they are fully dependent on helicopter services when land roads are impassable. When he spoke to this RFS over 10 times the call was disconnected. In the afternoon - the Sarawak state wifi that they use will have no signal at all.

    --------------------

Danesh Prakash, Director of TINDAK Malaysia

*Tindak Malaysia Advocates for Fair Electoral Boundaries in Sarawak*

Tindak Malaysia is an NGO that promotes democracy and fair and clean elections. The last delimitation of the Sarawak state assembly constituency was done in August 2015. The constitution requires that a new delimitation can be done after 8 years, which means that the delimitation of the Sarawak state assembly can be done since August 2023. However, until now, the state government has not submitted any proposal for the redelineation of electoral areas to the EC.

The question arises: how many state assembly seats are ideal for Sarawak? Logically, to achieve administrative efficiency, one parliamentary area can be divided into 3 state assembly areas. Currently, the numbers are uneven, with some parliamentary constituencies having 2 state assembly constituencies and some having 3. This suggests that if one parliamentary constituency has 3 state assembly constituencies, Sarawak is proposed to increase the number of DUN areas to 93.

Political reality also points in that direction. The merger of PSB with PDP has made it possible for GPS to need new state assembly constituencies to accommodate their candidates and former candidates who lost in the last election. Considering the current situation, the Sarawak government and EC have a very short time to complete this process, as this gazetting requires at least 2 years. Danesh Prakash commented that we are already in 2024, and the state election is expected to be held in 2026. What preparations are the Sarawakians making for the delimitation of electoral areas in Sarawak? Three parties can participate in this demarcation: the Sarawak government, local authorities, and 100 registered voters in an area. For that purpose, Tindak Malaysia has prepared a Google Form for the public to give suggestions and recommendations. Visit the Facebook page "Tindak Malaysia" for further developments.

    --------------------

Diog Dios, retired teacher from Puncak Borneo

*Calls for GPS Government to Prioritize School Infrastructure*

Mstar reported on March 13 that a parent was shocked to see the poor condition of mattresses and pillows when accompanying his two sons to the boarding house at a hostel of a school in Serian. Despite Tebedu assemblyman Simon Sinang later stating that these were damaged mattresses and pillows to be discarded, not intended for student use, the issue of poor school facilities in Sarawak, especially in rural areas, is not new.

Retired teacher Diog Dios stated that there are many poorly equipped schools in Sarawak, lacking in both facilities and teaching materials. This is known to the GPS government, and it is on their list, but they always wait for federal government funding, or if they have the funding, the repair work is often delayed.

He said that education can change the future of children, especially in inland areas. Having a good school environment can provide children with a comfortable learning space, but these are not the concerns of the GPS government. Schools report to the State Education Department about the lack of teaching materials or facilities on campus, or the need for repairs. If the GPS government is unaware, it is the school's negligence, endangering students' future. However, if they are aware, it hinders students' learning and progress, acting as a stumbling block to education.

He urged the GPS government to pay attention to the situation of schools in the state and to make good use of available resources to help schools and children.

Chong Yee Shan, central committee of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM)

*Peaceful Assembly Rights Under Scrutiny: A Call for Police Accountability*

Chong Yee Shan is one of four individuals who were summoned to the Dang Wangi Police Station on March 18 in relation to a peaceful assembly rally held in conjunction with International Women's Day on March 9.

Chong expressed dissatisfaction with the way the police handled their situation, stating that they encountered multiple obstacles from the day they submitted the notice to the police. The police refused to accept the notice, citing numerous excuses, which, in Chong's opinion, indicated that the police were unwilling to allow the rally. However, according to the Assembly Act, anyone wishing to organize a public assembly is only required to submit a notice to the police five days prior to the event, a requirement that Chong and her team complied with. Despite this, the police continued to insist that such assemblies required a permit, which is incorrect according to the Act. This was extremely frustrating for Chong.

There were over 200 people at the rally, and in addition to being investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act, the police also investigated them under minor offensive acts. The police claimed that the placards brought by the participants were sensitive.

Chong felt that the investigation was a waste of time and that the police should focus more on real criminal issues, as crime in the country is becoming increasingly serious.

Asking for humanitarian aid from the world community. Have been laid off because SFI has been declared bankrupt, evicted from company housing and running water and electricity supply cut off.

    2. Five penan settlements in Sungai Linau, Belaga have been cut off from land/road communication with the outside world since a week ago. The road to Lusong Laku has been completely cut off again since Wednesday @ 13 March 2024 - due to a landslide. The road leading to this penan settlement is a road built by a logging company. So far, there has been no positive response and action from the authorities towards the efforts to rehabilitate the collapsed and broken areas. For the record, the road to Lusong Laku was broken from 04 to 18 February 2024, causing stress and trauma among the stranded parties. The actions of the authorities are VERY SLOW AND SLOW in this matter. As marhaen people in the interior, we can only report, see, wait, hope and pray. It is hoped that this will not be prolonged and prolonged. This is one of the posts on FB SK Lusong Laku. For the record. More than 2 thousand penan residents in 5 longhouses are involved. We wonder why the government has failed to build safe roads for rural communities. Sarawak budget 13.6 billion 2024.

Jeffery Boudi, Spokesman for former SFI employees.

*The situation at SFI is still the same, even worse*

More than 600 employees of Sabah Forest Industry have been laid off following the bankruptcy of SFI approximately 11 months ago. SFI is a subsidiary of the Sabah state government. The last salary received by these workers was in May 2020 when Chief Minister Shafie Apdal was still in power. But since the GRS government led by Hajiji Nor ruled, every complaint from former SFI employees was ignored.

These former workers were evicted from their residential quarters. The water and electricity supply to the residence was cut off. Residents get dark and get a supply of rainwater. The situation becomes worse during this month of fasting. We have appealed to the chief minister of Sabah.

Recently Jeffrery also appealed to PMX Anwar Ibrahim. But until now, he said their pleas have been ignored. In conjunction with the current parliamentary session, they appeal to all YBs from Sabah to speak on their behalf, but only the former Sabah Chief Minister Shafie Apdal is willing to speak up and meet with them.

Jeffrery Baudi said that, they appeal to the government to be humane and take care of their welfare. Moreover, many of the former SFI employees are old and unable to work anymore. They appeal for humanitarian aid and need free accommodation.

Our fate is the same as the fate of the Palestinian people - Jeffery Baudi said. Jeffery is asking for help from the public by contacting him at 011-3663 3628. He hopes that an RFS representative will visit and see for himself the condition of this former SFI employee.

    -----------------------------

Abun Sui, Senator of PKR Sarawak

*SEB, plantation company and Belaga District Office must Restore the access road to Penan Settlements in Sungai Linau NOW*

It happened a same problem on 04 to 18 February 2024 too.

Abun Sui explained the situation regarding the Lusung Laku road, which has been cut off for a week. Abun stated that the responsibility for this road issue should be attributed to SEB (a GLC company), plantation companies operating in the area, and the Belaga District Office as representatives of the Sarawak government that collects timber royalties or land premiums from companies given land for oil palm and timber planting. These companies can assist in repairing this road.

This means that SEB plantation companies, and the Belaga District Office should work together to repair the collapsed Lusung Laku road, as it is the main road for the community in Lusung Laku to enter and exit for their daily activities.

    -----------------------------

    Larry Sng,MP of Julau

*Sarawak's Energy Vision: Prioritizing People Over Projects*

Months ago, Sarawak Premier Abang Johari mentioned the state's potential plans to construct two undersea transmission lines to strengthen its renewable energy agenda. Although discussions have started with Singapore and the Federal Government, no timeline was provided for the commencement of these lines, as Sarawak is still in the process of building its renewable energy capacity.

In response, Larry Sng commented on the need for caution regarding overspending on unnecessary mega projects that primarily benefit certain interest groups over the people. He highlighted the plan to build two power transmission lines—one to Singapore and the other to West Malaysia—as an example of potentially excessive spending, suggesting that one line might be sufficient.

Sng acknowledged Sarawak's abundance of resources and wealth but stressed the importance of avoiding overspending to prevent accumulating national debt. He expressed concern that many large-scale developments primarily benefit contractors rather than the people of Sarawak.

Moreover, Sng warned that poor decisions made by current leaders could create problems for future generations. He recommended that the GPS government focus on salvaging existing projects, some of which are already costing billions of ringgits.

    1. There has been evidence in court that land measurement using sec 6- People's land is changING ownership to government land. That's according to Councilor of the Indigenous Foundation (FSC) Nicholas Mujah. He referred to a case that happened in Sebangan in 2014. The case was brought to court. Nicholas Mujah VS Hock Tong Hin Sawmill, Sarawak Government and Forest Department. Mujah and the villagers won the case.

    ------------------------------

Nicholas Mujah Ason, Member of the Indigenous Foundation Council (FSC)

*Impact of land measurement sec 6 (people's land converted into government land)*

Today Nicholas Mujah shared a court case involving 7 villages in Sebangan Simunjan. Nicholas Mujah representing the villagers brought the case to court in 2014. In 2005 the residents of 7 villages were shocked when the logging company Hock Tong Hin Sawmil encroached on their land in Sebangan.

The company was given a logging license by the Sarawak state government.

In 1956 the government measured the land in the 7 villages using sec 6. The residents assumed that it was their land and would not be disturbed again by any party. Apparently sec 6 only gives the right to use the land but cannot own it - in simple language the land remains Government land.

Furious with the problem, Mujah sued the Hock Tong Hin Company, the Sarawak Government and the Sarawak forest department. By having strong evidence the people in 7 villages won in the high court, the appeal court and the federal court. By order of the court the residents regained their rights to the land in Sebangan.

But according to Mujah, the best method of recognizing indigenous land ownership is land measurement sec 18.

Returning to his duties as a member of the FSC council of indigenous expert-Mujah was given the task of maintaining environmental sustainability. That is, any forest activity must be sustainable, legally valid, environmentally friendly and socially friendly/ not change the composition of the social life of the local community. Any party that is threatened with environmental/forest development in their respective places.

Can report to me and I will take action as soon as possible. In addition to that, we also instill environmental awareness in the younger generation, through various programs – Mujah said.

    ------------------------------

Jeffrey Ngui, Chairperson of Muda Sarawak

*GPS Prioritizes Self-Enrichment, Neglects Impoverished Rural Villagers*

Recently, Jeffrey Ngui visited Noah's Ark, a free school for the Penan community in Miri. The visit included a meeting with Mdm Nelly and Bon to deliver supplies for the school. MUDA Sarawak, focused on service and value politic, emphasizes community service and has a humanitarian vision. They collaborate with NGOs to avoid making communities feel uneasy, steering clear of overt political involvement.

Noah's Ark, initiated two years ago, initially distributed 2500 food packs across Sarawak, leading to engagement with the Penan community in Miri and establishment of the free school. Unfortunately, the school closed due to lack of funding, though it served as both a school and daycare center, offering convenience for parents. Penan individuals who had left school would return to become teachers there. The government in Sarawak has been controlled by the PBB (Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu) from the past until now, whether during the era of Taib Mahmud or the current leadership of Abang Johari. Their approach towards the people has not changed – focused on self-enrichment. While acknowledging that Abang Johari has undertaken infrastructure improvements in urban areas such as the Automated Rapid Transit (ART) and many other large-scale infrastructure projects, these initiatives do not directly assist people in escaping poverty.

He stated that the GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) government is best at finger-pointing, rather than implementing policies that genuinely benefit the people. The GPS government tends to shift the blame for poverty issues towards the federal government, requesting more budget allocations for Sarawak's development. However, Sarawak is known for its abundant natural resources and a high reserve fund of up to 38 billion, so where is this money being used? This is why there are still many poor communities in Sarawak, as the government prioritizes self-enrichment over the welfare of its people, despite Sarawak's economic growth.

    ------------------------------

Mr. George, RFS listener from Miri

*Sarawak's Wealth Misused by GPS, Say Critics*

George commented on the statement of Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi that state governments should not solely rely on the federal government for development in their respective states, as state governments also have a responsibility to share in eradicating poverty.

Mr. George characterized the GPS government as not genuinely committed to eradicating poverty in Sarawak. Sarawak has more than enough financial resources to develop the state and its people. However, for the past 60 years, the GPS government has focused more on enriching themselves and their cronies.

Therefore, the people must change and replace the GPS government so that the new government will prioritize the welfare of the people.

    1. The trial of Najib Razak, who is charged with 4 counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering involving RM2.27 billion from 1MDB funds, continues. The 50th prosecution witness, 1MDB’s former general-counsel Jasmine Loo denied that she had any agreement with the MACC, the prosecutor, or the Malaysian government to testify in Najib's case. She also testified that she did not suspect fugitive businessperson Low Taek Jho (Jho Low) of being involved in embezzling funds from 1MDB as the latter was already a rich man.

The trial will resume on April 1, 2024. There are still many trials involving Najib. Why should he be pardoned when he still has many cases to face?

    2. Pas lost the suit and the court ordered the party to pay RM659 thousand to NAJ Press Resources (M) Sdn.Bhd (printer of Harakah Daily).

    3. Parents in Sarawak should speak up and report the schools where their children attend school. Only then will their problems get attention and have a chance to be addressed. Today Serian MP Richard Riot Jaem visited a poor school in Tebedu - as reported yesterday. The free education offered by GPS will only come into effect in 2026. Only involves IPT/IPTS, in terms of fee payment and free books. Free education should include modern school facilities at all levels and education should not be politicized.

Boyce Ngau Anyie, Retired Baram online teacher

*GPS, don't politicize education and don't make education a gimmick to get people's support!*

Boyce contacted the RFS to give his views on SSLR and poor schools in Sarawak. Boyce was impressed and saddened by the report of the secondary school in Tebedu/Serian- Hostel where students live in a very poor and sad condition. With such conditions, how can students study comfortably, Question- Boyce.

Boyce said, he as a retired teacher, he very sure that there are significant weaknesses. If the report has shown the school is in poor condition, allocations should be channeled immediately, either by the state or federal government. Or the assigned officers are not doing their job.

GPS is chanting a slogan - that they will give free education to the children of Sarawak by the year 2026. What is free education meant by GPS. Do you give free books and tuition fees at the IPT and IPTS level?

Boyce suggested that free education be given from primary, secondary to university level. Not just fees and free books. Even school facilities should be modern and clean. The state government that really wants autonomy in the field of education and health- should do the work and collect accurate data from now on. So that there will be no more cases like this in Tebedu - Boyce said.

Don't politicize education and don't make education a gimmick to get people's support.

Boyce also informed that the SSLR highway project has reached Baram. The people of Baram are happy with the construction of the road to the interior but still oppose the construction of the dam.

We are not anti-development. We are against dams that affect our lives and the environment. However for the SSLR project. We ask the government to be transparent and that our land involved is adequately compensated.

*Accountability in Action: Tracking Sarawak's Rural Development Funds*

Last December, Sarawak Premier Abang Johari announced an allocation of RM550 million to implement Projek Rakyat, RM420 million for the Rural Transformation Projects (RTP), RM200 million for Regional Development Agencies, and RM260 million for Minor Rural Projects (MRP).

Similar claims are made almost every year, meaning that every year, interior/rural state assemblymen receive a certain development budget to address infrastructure issues in their constituencies. However, there has been no visible development in the inland areas, and state assemblymen have not submitted reports explaining how the state government's budget has been used for projects.

Teo stated that these allocations must be transparent, and it must be reported where they are used. Like our Members of Parliament, who have to submit report cards every three months to explain where the budget has been used, but he has never seen where the state legislative assembly has used the budget.

He demands transparency from the state government regarding the use of funds, insisting on accountability for where the money is spent. Otherwise, there will continue to be accusations of no development in his constituency. If there are expenditures that are not disclosed, it is best to present accounts for clarification.

*Stateless Communities at Risk: amendments create conflict*

Last Friday, Saifuddin announced that the Cabinet had approved proposed amendments to the constitution regarding citizenship, which would be presented in the Dewan Rakyat. On Monday, he explained that the amendment aims to establish a degree of control to prevent granting citizenship to ineligible individuals. However, these proposed amendments have raised concerns among some Members of Parliament and activists.

Agnes Padan, a long-time advocate assisting Sarawakians in obtaining Malaysian citizenship, criticized the amendment, calling it a step backward and unfair to current applicants. She stated that while streamlining procedures could be acceptable, any changes affecting current applicants, given the already stringent requirements, could further complicate the application criteria and process, worsening the situation instead of alleviating it.

Agnes urged Members of Parliament, especially those from Sarawak, to understand the challenges faced by Sarawakians in obtaining Malaysian citizenship and to oppose these amendments. She also highlighted that these amendments could harm existing stateless communities, including the Orang Asli and Indigenous Peoples of Sabah and Sarawak, potentially creating a new class of stateless individuals trapped in bureaucratic processes.

*Unseen Poverty: The Realities of Rural Sabah*

Yesterday, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli disclosed in parliament that hardcore poverty in Sabah is six times higher than the national rate. According to the Sabah Economic Outlook 2024-2025, economist Dr. Abdul Aziz Karia highlighted three districts requiring assistance from both federal and state governments: Pitas, Tongod, and Kota Marudu.

However, many in Sabah argue that the need for assistance extends beyond these three districts. In the Kota Belud district, for example, a village named Kpg Koduko Pituru Darat has been grappling with poor road conditions since 1963.

Asthar said that, in 2011, they took matters into their own hands and initiated road repairs using their own funds, unable to wait for government intervention. In addition to road issues, the village also lacks access to electricity and treated water. Despite its potential for eco-tourism, Kpg Koduko lacks basic amenities. Consequently, residents have had to build second homes near the roadside and even sold lots to raise funds. Despite their efforts, no elected representative has ever visited the village, not even during election campaigns. The villagers have voiced their concerns, but it appears that their pleas have fallen on deaf ears. During the dry season, the road becomes dusty, and during the wet season, it turns muddy.

The situation in Kpg Koduko is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by many rural communities in Sabah. Lack of infrastructure, government assistance, and economic development have left the villagers in dire need of support. They are calling on the government to address their plight and provide the necessary assistance to improve their living conditions.
