ENGLISH TRANSLATION

On today’s show, we talk to George Young Si Ricord Jr about a community at Kampung Maang on the Kuching/Serian Road who have been living without electricity for 20 years, despite their proximity to the state capital. They have petitioned almost everyone for help, including 5-term state legislative assemblyman Roland Sagah, to no avail, so at last it is up to NGO Hidup to help them.

From SCRIPS (the Society for the Indigenous Peoples of Sarawak), Michael Jok shares a story to highlight the concerns surrounding the section 6 survey. He tells of a community who discovered that their land surveyed under Section 6 commanded a much lower rate of compensation than neighbouring land under alternative systems of survey. Why should there be a difference if it is entirely their land? Then Sidi Munan delves into that difference and also shares on the idea of usufructuary rights, a difficult word and a difficult concept for our rural folk.

Peter John Jaban speaks to us from the first day of a seminar entitled: “East Malaysians Against Corruption.” With a newly empowered MACC, a newly empowered group of NGOs from across the two Borneo states are learning how to better monitor the corridors of power.

As hopes for agricultural innovation and rural investment dominate the headlines, we speak to two smallholders and entrepreneurs who are leading the way. Lampu from Tatau has multiple income streams, engaging in handicraft production alongside market garden agriculture to bring in a decent income. Meanwhile, Rosemary from Balai Ringin has won awards for her approach to agricultural growth, diversifying her crop to include vegetables and fruit, alongside oil palm.

Tune in for all this and more, including our Berita Menoa. Semoa Kitai Tau Bejako!
