ENGLISH - On today’s show, we catch up with the long-standing story in Simunjan, where Senabong and his community are still withstanding attempts to take over their ancestral land. This time, the Indonesian workers at the plantation, with whom they had a violent fracas just one year ago, have come to keep the peace, informing the community that their ancestral graveyards, at the centre of the plantation, had been desecrated. The community are now standing vigil there, escorted by police into the area, to protect what remains. Old enemies become new allies, it seems.

Then, as the Chief Minister announces that Petros is being given the right to prospect for oil and gas in onshore areas, we look at an Indonesian comparative. Merah Johan Syah from Mining Watch tells us how the Indonesian government pursued similar policies as part of the ‘Pesta Rampok Kayu’, during Suharto’s time, but all this apparent wealth generation never quite seemed to trickle down to the indigenous people who suddenly found themselves with a Lithium mine on their doorstep. This seems a familiar story, in Indonesia, in Southeast Asia, throughout the world. Resistance is possible, especially if you start early, such as when the licenses are first awarded!

As news breaks that the new coronavirus might possibly be spreading via the digestive system, we speak to Professor Doctor Martin of the Sabah Colon Cancer Association. He talks first about the links between good digestive health and a strong immune system, especially important during an outbreak of this kind. However, he also goes on to look at the health of our health system and whether reforms have been taking place under our new Federal Government. There is slow progress, he says, especially in the Borneo States; a situation that requires a special Borneo-based solution.

The papers are suddenly full of indications that an election might be on the horizon; somewhere, sometime at least. Prospective candidates are being named, and parties are promising solar projects and every possible inducement for a positive judgement of their performance. But following on from Friday’s coverage of the Meluan YB campaigning hard outside the campaign period, we speak to Anung of Meluan, who tells us that they have written a letter to the State Secretary to complain about YB Rolland Duat’s abuse of power when he suspended the appointments of 20 Tuai Rumah in his constituency, leaving all their communities and the remaining public servants in limbo.

Then we talk to Mengga Mikui, former President of Sarawak Dayak National Union, about the characteristics of a good leader. All Tuai Rumah should be selected by the people, he says, in this new age of democracy, and their political affiliations do not appear on the list of personal qualities of fitness for office. Most importantly, they must be able to think for themselves and their community. So, we turn to the story of Nawan Luhat, the first Orang Ulu penghulu to also be a degree holder. An MBA, no less. In this case, Paul Baya tells of how the local YB consulted with the community and this Penghulu is the result, a decision respected by all. We end with Belayong, also from Meluan, who believes that elections should follow the Adat. The Tuai Rumah will be its guardian and so their appointment must maintain it if they are to do the job.
