Broadcast: 9 December 2019

On today’s show, we return to Tanjung Penasu near Sibu where the communities have taken steps to remove the concrete blocks that are blocking the road to their two longhouses. As the Sibu Resident Charles Siaw tells the Borneo Post that this is a dispute ‘between landowner and kampung folk’, activist Bill Jugah says that this remains irrelevant in the light of their human rights. All that the community can hope is that someone will take responsibility for the mess and open their access route immediately.

Last week we spoke to George Young Si Ricord Jr of Hidup about Kampung Maang. So today we speak to Gloria who comes from the community itself, cut off from all infrastructure. She tells us how they live in the dark and, even worse, how poor sanitation and lack of facilities have sparked an outbreak of dengue fever as mosquitos flourish.

From Sabah, we have two stories of statelessness and the differing strategies to tackle this key issue. Nelson Dino of Pertubuhan Profesional Suluk Sabah gives us an idea of the extent of the problem in our neighbouring state and a broad view of the problems that this causes for everyone affected. Then we speak to Marcel Simok, a filmmaker and activist from Citizen Journalists Malaysia. He has made a documentary on the subject entitled ‘Living in the Drains’, highlighting the plight of the stateless in Sabah. He describes how he was driven to document this issue as every ‘official’ version of the story ended up one-sided, in his view, praising the state government’s efforts to the detriment of those actually affected. This is the power of freedom of expression, he says, to speak out against such bias.

We end our show with a spotlight on dengue fever. Horrifying statistics are seeping out of the Ministry of Health, which show a 69.5% increase in cases across the country in the last year and, even worse, of an astronomical 236% increase in Sarawak itself. But these reports follow a general trend across Southeast Asia as rising temperatures caused by global climate change are fuelling an explosion in the mosquito population. Aroe from KAMY (Klima Action Malaysia) shares the realities of climate change with our rural listeners who are on the frontline of environmental protection as custodians of some of the world’s richest rainforest. Then Azrul Mohd Khalib from the Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy tells us how this change in temperatures is increasing the incidence of dengue in their area, a new threat, which is particularly pressing for those far away from decent hospital provision or even for those with difficulty accessing it, like our friends from Kampung Maang.

Tune in for all this and more, including our usual Berita Menoa. Semoa Kitai Tau Bejako.
