On today’s show, we speak to Zulhaidah Suboh about the residents of Rumah Lagan, Sungai Telajan in Ulu Sibuti who finally received their water supply, not from taps but rather from tanks, even though they applied as far back as in November last year. The Jabatan Bekalan Air Laku (Department of Rural Water Supply) opted for tanks, filled with mosquito larvae and all kinds of other unmentionables, in spite of every bilek already being fitted with a water meter and now a pipe to nowhere.  Then, we talk to Marudi YB, Dr Penguang about the month-long problem of polluted water in Bakong, a result of zero maintenance at the plant supposed to supply drinking water to the community. The YB blasts the JBALB for sitting on the problem for so long. Why do I have to interfere before you do your work, he asks?

The YB then goes on to address the delicate balance between wildlife conservation and community income as restrictions on the sale of wild boar in traditional markets start to bite. Dr Penguang comes out on the side of nature, saying that wild boar should be conserved and should not become a commercial commodity. If communities wish to eat it, according to their traditions, he says, it can be traded in the privacy of their own longhouses and not sold on the open market. But lawyer Abun Sui goes the other way saying that communities have relied on this kind of income for generations. The forest is a genuine resource to those that live in it and therefore they should be allowed to benefit from it. As long as loggers and plantation companies reap the rewards from Sarawak’s land, why shouldn’t the local people, who respect its bounty and waste none of its resources, he asks?

The state of Sarawak’s healthcare is back in the news with the appointment of a new state Health Director and calls from Dr Sim of SUPP for decentralization of the Sarawak healthcare system. Agnes Padan, a healthcare activist from Lawas, details the difficulties faced by rural people in accessing healthcare, including interminable journeys and endless border crossings. Then, Dr Roland Matu takes up the now familiar refrain, describing the lack of rural infrastructure caused by decades of neglect and ineffective representation of Sarawak’s specific issues at a Federal level. So, from across party lines, Dr Kelvin Yii, MP for Bandar Kuching for PH and a medical doctor himself, supports the idea of decentralisation in principle, creating a more responsive system for Sarawak and putting the health of the state as a priority for future PH policy.

Opis Menteri Sarawak minta Kepala Opis nya ti baru, ngatur palan endur berubat baru dikena nyaga pengerai rayat mayuh, peminta nya ari Dr. Sim.
