Covid: Our Wake-Up Call On Inequality | Broadcast 15 May 2020

ENGLISH - On today’s show, we speak first to activist Haris Ibrahim who sees the Covid-19 crisis as a wake-up for the workers of Malaysia, the poor and the marginalised, to realise their importance in a capitalist economy and fight for their rightful position. It is a wake-up call to the Taib Mahmuds of the world and their logging cronies for their destruction of nature and the creation of new coronaviruses. It is a wake-up call for Sarawakians to seek their own self-determination as he believes they will now be supported by every region of Malaysia struggling against inequality and discrimination in their own home states. Are we awake yet?

Then we talk to Thomas Fann of Bersih about the utmost importance of Monday’s parliament sitting to provide the checks and balances in a new Malaysia going forward and avoid the descent into dictatorship. The constitution demands a sitting every six months, but that needs to be in substance as well as in name. Social distancing should be easy, he says, as hardly any MPs attend even at the best of times! All evidence suggests that Muhyiddin is running scared, he adds, from the motion brought by Dr Mahathir. Stand and deliver, he asks. Parliament must decide.

Then we speak to Apai Bunyau of Sebauh, Bintulu. This area shares a boundary with Miri, Baram, Kapit and Belaga and yet, there is not one single bank and only one single clinic unchanged since the beginning. Where are all the YBs, Tuai Rumah and Penghulus, he asks? From Datuk Celestine Ujang to Datuk Stephen Rundi, all have been asleep on the job.

Niko from Indonesia, a reporter with Kalbar, tells us about the streams of migrant workers returning across the border to Kalimantan. Many have been ordered by the government to home quarantine, but the coming Hari Raya season will be a testing time for the state, as citizens of West Kalimantan have been ordered not to travel from their districts or to balik kampung!

We end with Lydia who runs a roadside stall at Simpang Layar in Betong. She has run a stall for several years, first in a shop until the owner chased her away, jealous of her business, so now at the roadside. But right now, she needs a loan and is waiting hopefully for her application for Bantuan Perniaga Kecil. Hopefully it comes through to give her hope for the future.
