On today’s show, we open with a terrifying case as Apai Emanuel of Bintulu tells us how his son was almost kidnapped from the compound of his primary school, SK Kidurong 1. This was possibly motivated by his opposition to the forced relocation of his community to Kampung Pisang from Sungei Sebatang, he says, though this is still under investigation. But even though this is an isolated incident, it raises issues of security in schools, especially where the grounds are open to all and there is only a single security guard.

Then we turn to the second part of our interview with Oswald Braken Tisen of Sarawak Forestry, in which he tells us of the compensation scheme set up for anyone who suffers losses due to wildlife. Through this, farmers can protect wildlife and their livelihoods at the same time. The fact that no one has ever claimed is beside the point. The information should be out there now and there is always a first time!

The Kimanis by-election over the weekend was the latest in a string of such election defeats for the new PH government, extending the margin between themselves and their opponents. Sabah lawyer and political economist, Jeremiah Yee, tells us about the Sabah Temporary Pass (PSS), one of the main points of contention in the election battle, and about why many Sabahans are against it, especially given the backdrop of Project IC.

Then Bill Jugah, a Sarawak activist dealing with issues of statelessness, tackles the question of why Sabah is so keen to do something about this problem while the natives of Sarawak remain unconsidered and undocumented. To end, we hear from multiple voices – activists, politicians and commentators – as to why PH is failing to make inroads on the by-election scene. Single issues like PSS are coming to the forefront while issues like the economy, probably the world’s most effective vote winner, are being ignored. With the next election drama likely to be the Sarawak State Election, how many of these electoral trends will continue to impact in the broader scheme of a whole state and will PH be able to turn themselves around in order to turn the tables?
