ENGLISH SYNOPSIS

On today’s show, we speak to Andrew Paul, one of the many land rights activists who sat angrily through yesterday’s forum in Kuching, being lectured by the government about the future of their land. Questions were limited and an opportunity for mutual understanding lost. Tune in again on Monday for an in-depth examination.

Confusion reigns and hackles have been raised over Public Utilities Minister Steven Rundi’s ill-advised statement that the State Government might reconsider the Baram Dam. Despite a hasty retraction – too much had been said, perhaps – Mark Bujang of Save Rivers and Steven from Baram share how the communities involved remain filled with horror that their five year fight might be about to restart.

In our new segment,Ekonomi Rumah Panjai(Longhouse Economics), we look at the reality facing many rural people. Is there an economy to be had in the longhouse? As many rural people migrate into town looking for work offshore or else as a coolie in a coffeeshop, the kampungsare increasingly empty. We speak to filmmaker, Albert Bansa who is debuting with the Freedom Film Festival this year, under their theme of ‘Harga Naik, Gaji Maintain’. He was moved to make a film by the touching story of Tonny, who has left his son in the longhouse while he works in construction elsewhere. Meanwhile, David Kallom advises our listeners to beware of the allure of the bright lights in the big city. While kampung folk struggle there to make ends meet, their land is left idle and ripe for being lost. Romuald Siew completes our journey, wondering why kampung folk have been consigned to contract work in the cities, endless rental payments and tiny wages when once they were able to live off their land.

Tune in for all this, the news and many more stories.
