On today’s show, we kick off with Ambrose Badi of Kapit who fears that Dayak culture is under threat after reports that parangs with handles made from deer bone were seized in a market in his area. Following hot on the heels of suspension of gun licenses and seizures of wild boar meat, he fears that the rural Dayak way of life is being deliberately eroded.
But, as news of the Wuhan coronavirus spreads around the world, with four confirmed cases in Malaysia and the Health Department awaiting tests on a patient in Bintulu, we look at one purported source of the disease in eating infected wildlife.
Mohd Azrul of the Galen Centre advises us to keep calm and stop speculating. The true source of the virus remains unknown as yet and information will come out when it is confirmed. But he tells us about the spread of this disease from China around the world and gives advice on how our local folk should react to any illness.
Meanwhile, Achul from Kapit shares his fears on all the new outbreaks that seem to be spreading into the Sarawak interior. Send the Health Department here to investigate disease, he says, instead of sending them after urban smokers!
But, in an interconnected world, disease is just one aspect of modern life that can easily be spread. What of food and other imports that we rely on?
Dr Edwin Bosi, the former State Veterinarian of Sabah, shares on the rumours about the Wuhan market where the latest coronavirus is suspected to have originated. Wildlife is not the problem, he says, but rather the manner in which we humans keep them. Whether commercial farming or appalling conditions in illegal wildlife markets, a stressed animal in unclean circumstances is more likely to breed disease.
Dr Davies Banda, a Kuching veterinarian, reiterates the dangers of this and of other diseases that can come with eating meat that has not been properly raised and cared for. Making sure we grow enough healthy food to survive at a local level should be a priority, he says, and for that we need to instill a greater love of agriculture, perhaps even through reintroducing the subject in Sarawak’s schools.
Then Sarojeni Rengam of PANAP supports this. She worries that Malaysia, a nation with prime agricultural potential, brings in 60% of its food from overseas, often filled with pesticides and preservatives to keep it ‘fresh’ on its long journey. Better to grow at home, she says, and know exactly what we are putting into our bodies.
Additionally, Dr Jeremiah Lee, a political economist from Sabah, explains the statement that the PSS is to be scrapped. Power to the people, he says!
