Veteran legal campaigner Harrison Ngau says that the amendment of the Sarawak Land Code Section 6a represents a sham attempt by BN / GPS to gain the confidence and votes of the indigenous people of Sarawak. Official records show the average NCR land ownership per Original Longhouse in Sarawak amounts to over 15 000 hectares. So just recognising 1000 hectares is an insult to Sarawakians he says. There is water everywhere in Sarawak, but not a safe drop to drink in so many rural areas where so-called 'development' has polluted great rivers but failed to bring piped treated water to replace them or virtually any other basic amenities - places like Tubau, stripped bare by logging, says the Hulu Rajang branch leader Abu Sui and the settlements for displaced Penan tribespeople forced from their homes thanks to Murum dam where they still have no electricity supply, just miles from the hydro-electric power station. Cecilia Siti Una from Betong, agrees that Sarawakians especially from rural areas are in dire need of basic amenities such as roads, clean water, electricity, internet, schools and clinics. In most rural areas of Sarawak these facilities are not yet available and there are no ATM machines to get out cash, which produced especial hardship during lockdown. What are GPS planning to do about sharing the billions cashed in from the ATMs of Sarawak's forests, land bank, and hydropower?
