On today’s show, we head to Baram where multiple issues of infrastructure are raised. Anthony Lawai shares his frustration at how the Long San clinic was closed at short notice, leaving the community with limited healthcare. Then Elias Lipi Mat wonders where the road from Long Banga to Pa’lungan has gone, after the Chief Minister Abang Johari promised RM3 million to fund it. No funds have been forthcoming and now heavy rains have made the route impassable. However, he then goes on to tell how funding of a different kind is helping his community. With the recent establishment of the MPKKP, now two community representatives are able to draw finance, one from Federal and one from State. As the community gets together, they can divide it up and conquer!

In our Adat Rumah Panjai with Uncle Nicholl Ragai Lang, he describes how communities in the old days would settle disputes. Usually with a spiritual basis, the community would divide, each half going their separate ways. But then he asks the question of whether political differences are enough of a basis to create this kind of rift. Then Apai Dom of Saratok tells how his longhouse put up a barrier between its two sections, one half supporting one political party and the other another. But after three unexpected tragedies, taken as a bad omen, they decided that together was better and took the partition down.

The issue of rural to urban migration becomes ever more confusing, especially as Rina Harun, Minister of Rural Development, makes a terrible mistake by mixing up the direction of the movement, stating publically that more people are moving from town to country than the other way round. This mistake was picked up by Bernama and simply repeated in multiple publications without question. As anyone in Sarawak can say (and as the Migration Report 2018 in fact clearly states), the net migration is definitely in the direction of town. But are the streets of the city paved with gold? We speak to Cikgu Mabong about the community at Chawan Road who are squatting on the land there, with nowhere else to go except to share space with a graveyard beneath their ramshackle houses. Meanwhile, Mak Bibi from Kampung Sion in Tapah tells us how she came to town twenty years ago desperate for work but has joined a community forgotten by the government, with no infrastructure and the imminent threat of eviction.
