Green Zones Become Red Zones While Ignorance Continues | Broadcast 15 April 2020

ENGLISH - On today’s show, we have a non-Covid story to start off, a welcome relief perhaps. But not a welcome relief for Apai Bujang, who was until recently employed as a security guard in a Rimbunan Hijau oil palm estate in Tinjar, Baram. This 70 year old tells us that the plantation company is operating on their land and, in return for this, the community were promised that anyone fit to work would find a place in the estate for life. But now, 20 years later, he has received a letter, in the middle of lockdown, saying that he has been sacked, effective June. Yet, the company still want to extend their lease with the community, just as he is asking for an extension on his contract.

In Tubau, Bintulu, plantation companies and loggers are causing another type of problem. Gabriel tells us that that the Indonesian workers at the logging camps and sawit plantations nearby are out hunting for wild animals in the middle of lockdown when the communities can least protect their lands. Wild boar, pangolins and porcupines are being hunted down and traded amongst the workers for their own consumption as they continue their operations. Don’t they have anything else to eat?

But, in the midst of Covid-19, this kind of practice is even more horrifying as many scientists are now coming out with evidence that these types of viruses are the result of man’s increasingly exploitative relationship with wildlife. This has prompted local NGOs to release a statement calling for a halt on logging and oil palm to prevent future catastrophes like the one the world is currently facing. Peter Kallang, winner of the 2019 Seacology prize, tells us that loss of habitat leads to sick and starving animals who are prone to infection. When humans eat the meat, which they must when food sources are scarce, there is the possibility of passing on some novel disease. Hello Covid-19, thought to originate from pangolins or bats, as well as SARS, Ebola, and the Nipah virus. This was not the way during the old days and Nicholl Ragai Lang shares a Kenang Penarang with us on the ancient taboos on eating wildlife and protecting the environment.

But while plantation workers are going hungry and seeking any food source, Nur Khairunisa Anna Binti Abdullah of Kampung Semera, Sadong Jaya, tells us that she has decided to give away all the food stocks from her cake business, Annisa’s cake house. All the flour, eggs, sugar and milk that she had bought to run her business is now going to feed the community while she can no longer work to supplement the small amount given by their YB. Other businesses should do the same, she says. There is no point allowing everything to rot while others have so little.

In Sabah, however, the situation seems even worse on the ground, though on paper they are at 285 cases and 4 deaths to Sarawak’s 363 and 14 respectively. Professor Dr Martin tells us that people in KK are both panic buying and ignoring the MCO at the same time. Two supermarkets in Luyang were closed down yesterday customers blitzed the store, ignoring all social distancing rules. But much more frightening is the report that an unidentified stateless man, found dead in KK on April 6th, has tested positive for Covid-19. As many of the undocumented live in huge squatters’ colonies, cheek by jowl, and without any healthcare, does the government really have any idea of how many cases there truly are, he asks? They must go out to these camps and test if they are to understand the full scale of the problem and to prevent a rampant outbreak turning the green zones to red. As Dr Christina Rundi, KKM Director of Sabah, talks about a 25% ‘unknown’ cluster, he wonders how the government can leave details of so many of the population also ‘unknown’.

Meanwhile, on the politics front, Dr Teo talks to us about the most recent sackings in PKR as Baru Bian’s colleague, Desmond Kho, confirms that the former head of PKR is considering joining PSB. Dr Teo, also a long-standing colleague of Baru Bian, shares his dismay that a long-standing land rights advocate would switch to a party promoted by Tiong Thai King of the Rimbunan Hijau family. How can he possibly believe that he can continue in his struggle with these new colleagues? But Dr Teo looks to the future. PKR can rebuild by the next state election with high calibre candidates who can see the side of right. Baru is apparently choosing a different path.
