YAPEIM and YADIM: What’s your agenda? | Broadcast 24 January 2020
On today’s show, we look at an issue which is setting every online channel alight. Reports are everywhere of two organisations – YAPEIM (Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia) and YADIM (Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia) – which are currently on a roadshow all around the rural areas, from Kapit to Kanowit to Belaga, offering to pay rural parents the huge sum of RM1,000 per child. Just like that! In return, all the parents have to do is fill out a form detailing the child’s name, address, current religion, school, pretty much any personal detail you can think of. But who is behind these organisations, what their goals are and, more importantly, where they get their funding from – a massive amount given the massive free-for-all – is unclear.
We speak first to George Chen, from PKR Kanowit, who confirms that teachers are being asked to endorse these forms, proving that the students are indeed in school. But his hackles are up given that no one has any idea what all this information is to be used for. He has promised a press conference to raise the issue.
Then Fahana of Sibu, now 40, tells of a similar push in her childhood. Her illiterate father was asked to sign a form on her behalf by a teacher in return for a cash payout. The next thing they knew, she had been irrevocably converted to Islam in Form 4, despite her father’s objections and the fact that she has never practiced before or since.
A similar story emerges from Sabah, where activist Kanul Gindol describes widespread conversions in return for cash, often against the parents’ understanding of the strings attached. If there are cash payouts for students, he says, why is it being distributed through a religious group and not through a secular education agency?
Then two elected representatives confirm cases in their area. Dr Kelvin Yii of Bandar Kuching tells us of a case that he is bringing to the attention of parliament in which a YAPEIM applicant found themselves converted without their knowledge. Meanwhile, Datuk Dr Penguang of Marudi advises parents to steer clear of these organisations and to apply direct to the government-sanctioned source of Yayasan Sarawak.
Then, on a separate note, Arun of Sekat, tells of his plan to conduct a congress in Sarawak on the inclusion of Khat in the syllabus, something that he worries has a hidden agenda. Putrajaya should respect Sabah and Sarawak, he says, before imposing the subject on the Borneo states. He describes how the national language was made more accessible through a romanised script by Tunku Abdul Rahman. Why go back now, he wonders?
We end with Peter Kallang on the meeting between Orang Ulu delegations from Kalimantan and Sarawak, signing an MOU to collaborate on the cultural education of the communities.

Tunku Abdul Rahman madahka muntang agi belajar ka Bahasa Malaysia ngena tulis romanis. Ku Arun, nama kebuah pelajar sekula diatur surut diatu ?
