*Controversy Surrounding Larry Sng's Appointment as Chairman of Malaysian Timber Industry Board*
Dennis objected to the appointment of Larry Sng as the Chairman of the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB). Larry, who is a Member of Parliament for Julau and the President of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party, was appointed to the position by Deputy Prime Minister Fadilah Yusuf, who oversees the portfolio of the Ministry of Primary Industries.

Dennis asserted that Larry was not qualified for the position because he has never been at the forefront of opposing illegal logging or defending the rights of indigenous people to the forest. Instead, activists such as Peter Kalang or Dr. Ellie Luhat should be appointed to the position because they have proven expertise and understanding of sustainable environmental conservation.

Larry is also not a principled leader. After Pakatan Harapan fell in 2018, he left the People's Justice Party and now infiltrated the PMX administration through an appointment by GPS. If Larry had stayed principled in PKR, he would likely have been a minister by now, said Dennis, not appealing for a position like the Chairman of MTIB.

    Protecting Children During the Pandemic

Malaysia’s health ministry is mulling the implementation of a mask mandate in schools amid a rise in COVID-19 cases. According to the latest data from the health ministry, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose by 30.4 per cent in the 14 days leading up to Apr 22. The health ministry also recorded 14,161 active cases as of that date.

Dr. Malina comment that, in the current situation, the majority of people have been vaccinated against the pandemic, making a significant difference compared to the period between 2020 and 2022. However, the severity of the outbreak still depends on the location and population affected.

Therefore, the education department recommends that children continue to wear masks. For families who cannot afford the cost of masks and other protective equipment, the government can provide subsidies to assist them.

Moreover, it is still advisable to wear masks in crowded places, especially for families with children, as it can protect them from getting infected since their immune systems may be more fragile than adults.

In hot weather conditions, it is recommended to drink more water, consume fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins, and stay indoors as much as possible to avoid going outside.

Bob Manolan Mohamad Senator Org Asli
*Heavy Machinery Remains at Disused Mines in Tasik Chini for Over Two Years*
It has been two years since the Pahang royal household decreed the cessation of mining activities in the second-largest natural lake in Peninsular Malaysia due to environmental concerns. However, as of the time of writing, valuable heavy machinery such as excavators and dump trailers are still parked in the former mines, causing unease among the Orang Asli community living in the vicinity. These villagers depend heavily on the natural lake for their income, such as fishing and tourism.

In 2000, Bob Manolan visited the area and spoke to the community. At that time, most rivers were already polluted due to mining operations. He was told that while all mining licenses have been ceased for operation, some licenses are still valid. Villagers have also informed him that heavy machinery is still parked in the area, causing worry not only among the local communities but also among tourists and environmentalists.

Bob hopes that the owners of the heavy machinery will remove their machines from the area. He also plans to visit the site before the next parliamentary sitting and bring up the issue.

    Mr. Linggang from Mulu
*Concerns over Lack of Progress in State Development under GPS Administration*
Mr. Linggang shared with RFS about the state-level development under the GPS administration. He stated that there has been no significant progress that is concerning.

Here, Mr. Linggang comment that it cannot be denied that some people are still complaining about the cost of living that burdens their lives. However, he urged the public to give at least a little support for PMX to work towards restoring the country's issues burdened by debt and corruption. We have 5 years before changing the Prime Minister, and we must ensure that the people do not lose hope and give space for DSAI to continue governing the country.

    - Five officers attached to Human Resource Minister V Sivakumar had their services terminated with immediate effect, according to sources from the Prime Minister's Department.  The move was part of the government's efforts to clean up the Human Resources Ministry after recent allegations of corruption and abuse of power linked to Sivakumar's officers.

    ----------------------

Adrian Pereira, Executive Director at North South Initiative

*Unresolved foreign worker problem in Malaysia may affect corruption perception and migrant labor reputation*

The Malaysian government announced the approval of 500,000 foreign workers' entry into Malaysia in January. However, problems arise when these foreign workers are not provided with work upon arrival, leading to their dumping in temporary detention depots. These foreign workers have to pay between RM 10,000 to RM 25,000 to agents to enter Malaysia, and the employer who employs them also pays almost the same amount to the agent.

Despite this, the problem of placing workers still persists. Pereira pointed out that every time the approval for foreign workers to work in Malaysia is opened, dozens of millionaires are born immediately. This is the main problem that needs to be investigated and resolved by the Malaysian government. Pereira also emphasized that if employers and workers work together, they can defeat agents who take advantage of foreign workers entering Malaysia. Furthermore, it should be noted that suppressing the wages of foreign workers also suppresses and affects the wages of local workers.

Pereira explained that in 2018, during the PH administration, a committee was established to investigate and find a solution to this problem. However, until now, the results of the investigation and findings of this committee have not been presented. If the problem of foreign workers in Malaysia remains unresolved, Malaysia's position in the corruption perception index, human trafficking, and migrant labor will continue to be questioned at the international level. Andrian urged the PMX administration to solve this problem as soon as possible and prosecute those involved in corruption and abuse of power in court.

Michael Kong Feng Nian, DAPSY Kuching chief cum Chong Chieng Jen’s Special Assistant

*10 written questions for DUN sitting give Abang Jo advance notice to prepare answers*

Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen has submitted 10 written questions for the upcoming State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting that will be held from May 15 until May 24.

Chong Chieng Jen's special assistant, Michael Kong, said that one is about Sarawak's developments and economic growth. Also, there are questions on the average income of Sarawakians and what the state should do to increase it. Besides that, Chong also has some questions on strategies for Sarawak to increase the usage of EVs (electric vehicles), as Sarawak is a state that supplies a lot of electricity.  Apart from that, Kong said Chong is also querying the Premier on the total costs for the construction of the proposed 600 telecommunication towers announced in 2019 and how many of these towers have yet to be rented by telecommunication companies for the installation of their transmitters.

Michael Kong commented that as usual, the GPS government is not going to answer all those questions. But since they raised the questions earlier, they have time to answer, or answer in the next DUN sitting, which is in December.

    ----------------------

    Mr Robninson from Marudi

*Communities Worried About Possible Further Delays to Marudi Bridge Project

Mr. Robinson frequently travels between Marudi and Miri to inform people that the Marudi bridge project is under construction. However, the progress of the project seems to be slow, and nobody knows when it will be completed. The Marudi bridge project is very important for the people of Marudi, who currently rely solely on the ferry service.

Mr. Robinson became worried when a friend, who is an excavator operator, told him that he would be moved to another project. Therefore, Mr. Robinson thinks that there may be some problems with the Marudi bridge project, and it may be delayed again.

However, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas stated two days ago that the Marudi bridge project across Baram River is making good progress, with a two percent increase ahead of schedule from its previous 'sick project' status. The contractor, Pekerjaan Piasau Konkerit Senderian Berhad, has committed to completing the RM116.5 million project within two years. The 650-meter long two-lane single carriageway bridge is expected to be completed by October 2025.

    ----------------------

Mr Bennett Bunyau, Veteran journalist from Miri

*The Drawbacks of Media Freedom: Misuse by Religious Extremists to Pursue their Agendas*

Malaysia’s 73rd ranking on Reporters Without Borders’ (RSF) World Press Freedom Index 2023 is a positive development which emphasises the commitment of the government in its assurance of press freedom, said Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Veteran journalist Mr Bennett Bunyau stated that freedom of the media has its pros and cons. The good thing about it is that it provides space for media practitioners to speak up without fear, unlike during the era of the Internal Security Act. Only with this freedom of the media, people are more aware of human rights issues and can object to what they feel uncomfortable with the government's administration.
Mr Bennett was once expelled from a district for writing an article about NCR issues in a newspaper company, and he often received arrest threats for publishing articles about NCR issues. However, this kind of thing no longer happens recently, and Mr Bennett Bunyau is also actively selling a book about NCR written in English at the Gawai Bazaar in Miri.

What are the drawbacks of media freedom?

Mr Bennett Bunyau said that the downside of media freedom is that it can be misused by religious extremists to pursue their religious agendas, as we have seen in the peninsula of Malaysia, where religious extremists have used media freedom to play on their religious sentiments.

    ----------------------

Kushairy Pangkas, the Head of Sarawak PKR Human Resources Burea

*Local Workers Should Be Prioritized for Any Projects*

Kushairy Pangkas has reported on the dumping of foreign workers from China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh at the Baleh dam project site in Kapit, Sarawak. He highlighted that this poses a threat to the opportunities of local workers and emphasized that priority should be given to local workers, and only if there are no qualified local workers, then foreign workers should be considered.

Kus also stressed that many local workers are skilled due to their experience working in the logging industry. He also criticized the Sarawak state government's plans for several previous mega-projects, where the government failed to train and provide a local workforce as early as 5 to 10 years before the implementation of these projects. Kus hopes that local workers will be trained and absorbed as permanent employees after the completion of mega-projects, which will improve the skills and socio-economic conditions of the people in Sarawak.

    > RFS wishes all Buddhists a happy Wesak Day.

    > Malaysia has achieved its highest-ever ranking in media freedom, climbing 40 spots to rank 73rd compared to last year's 113th. The previous government's policy of not practicing media freedom had put pressure on RFS during its decade-long broadcast. Malaysia can achieve an even better position with a more open and responsible policy.

    ---------------------

    Iswardy Morni, political analysis

*UMNO will likely choose PH and use the next four years to strengthen the party before GE16*
Rumors are circulating that the government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will fall in the near future. This matter was further fueled by a Facebook post from Muhamad Faiz, a member of the PPBM party's Supreme Leadership Council, who claimed that PN already has the support of 126 members of parliament.

According to Iswardy, the possibility of changing the government through SD support is no longer valid after the anti-party jumping act came into force. But if it is true that PN/PPBM has more support than the majority, there is only one way to change the government, which is to bring a vote of confidence or a vote of no confidence in parliament. This is the only way allowed by the constitution, and the King is bound by the constitutional amendment after the party hopping act is passed and enforced by parliament.

When asked about the worst scenario Anwar might face after the elections in six states, Iswardy stated that even if the worst scenario happens and all six states fall into the hands of the opposition, the federal government will still remain in place. The possibility of UMNO changing its stance in support of PN is also unlikely because UMNO and PN+PAS both draw support from Malays and Muslims, while PH and PKR have widespread support from all races and religions. UMNO will likely choose PH and use the next four years to strengthen the party before GE16.

Commenting on Hadi Awang's meeting with Tun Mahathir to sign the Proclamation of the Malays, Iswardy confirmed that PAS is a party that sells religious and racial products. Hadi hopes that by doing so, his party will gain strong support from Muslim Malays. Hadi affirmed his support for the proclamation in accordance with the principles of Islamic struggle. However, Iswardy believes that Hadi is wrong because the Prophet Muhammad's struggle crossed racial boundaries. Iswardy thinks that the concept of Madani Malaysia is encouraging and that Malaysians as a whole are accepting it. It remains to be seen whether Hadi's innate race and religion narrative or Madani Malaysia will be more popular in the six states that will face elections in a few months.

    ----------------------

    Barnie Lasimbanng, environmental activist

*what the premier Abang Jo said is just rhetoric to ensure they have power over this carbon resource*

It is justified to have matters related to carbon under the administration of the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities, in view of the United Nations (UN)’s recognition of it as being a ‘commodity’. In pointing this out, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg opined that carbon should be seen as a commodity in view of Malaysia’s robust carbon market.

Barnie Lasimbang said that, Abang Jo is emphasizing whether carbon is a commodity or whether it must be under the administration of the energy sector. However, the main issue here is that carbon is actually a platform that has emerged due to the need to control climate change.
Therefore, the UN program or plan proposed under the UN framework for climate change mitigation aims to make use of carbon.
This sudden value of carbon is the reason why everyone is struggling to control this new resource. He believes that using carbon as a means of climate change mitigation is entirely wrong if carbon emissions persist.
This is because it will also affect human livelihood, and we can see that it will not reduce forest degradation.

Therefore, that is why they want carbon to be classified as a natural resource.

In the context of Sarawak, climate change is a regulation or platform where Malaysia is a signatory to the convention, not Sarawak. It means that the jurisdiction related to climate is under federal authority.

    ----------------------

Jeffery Ngui, President of Muda Sarawak

*The Pardon to Najib is contrary to the principle of the rule of law*

Muda has expressed its position that the Pardon Board should reject any pardon applications submitted for former Prime Minister Najib Razak

As one of the Muda Central Executive Committee, Jeffery said the party would oppose any attempt towards granting pardon to Najib. The Committee described Najib as a "kleptocrat" who has brought hardship to the country, and a pardon for him would send the wrong message to the Malaysian people.

Jeffrery ask, will ordinary citizens who have been found guilty of the same crime also be given this privilege? A pardon for Najib while he is still serving his sentence would send a message that any influential individual with power and connections need not worry about the law. This is contrary to the principle of the rule of law.

Najib is currently serving a 12-year jail sentence after being found guilty of charges involving criminal breach of trust, money laundering and abuse of power related to RM42 million of SRC International funds.

UMNO, which is now a key party in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's administration, has filed a petition for a pardon for Najib.

    ----------------------

    Jwin from Opar Lundu

*everyone knows about Najib's corrupted case, and he shouldn't have the chance to be pardoned*

As a public, Jwin commented that he does not agree with Najib being pardoned. If someone makes a mistake, they should be held accountable, especially if they committed corrupted and took advantage of the people. Although he may not understand the complex political situation, but everyone knows about Najib's corrupted case, and he shouldn't have the chance to be pardoned.
He also said that he is satisfied with Anwar's leadership in the new government and look forward to seeing more new political changes

【In these 5 months, Anwar has done many reforms and there will be more in the future】

SUARAM Executive Director- Sevan Doraisamy thinks Anwar Ibrahim will be the worst prime minister in Malaysian history if he fails to fulfill his reform promises. Doraisami questioned Anwar's political determination. According to Doraisami, it is not yet on the list of laws to be amended by the government; Security Offenses Act (Special Measures), Crime Prevention Act, Terrorism Prevention Act, Dangerous Drugs Act which still have clauses of detaining suspects for a long period of time without having to prosecute them in Court. Sim asks SUARAM to be rational and give Anwar some time. In these 5 months, Anwar has done many reforms and there will be more in the future. Among them, according to Sim - Parliament Reform - there is a special question and answer session with the Prime Minister (PMT). Abolish the mandatory death penalty in drug cases and establish a special Parliamentary select committee that has full power to summon anyone to testify. Add YB Sim- most importantly, a Law Reform Committee has been established, which is examining outdated laws that need to be amended. According to YB Sim- despite leading the Unity government, there is nothing stopping Anwar from reforming his administration. According to Sim, Anwar carried out reforms in his administration faster than all previous prime ministers, besides Anwar is the prime minister who listens to the voice and welfare of the people the most. The question is not how quickly outdated laws are amended. But an amendment should be neat, orderly and precise.

    -——————————-—-

    Chris Lau, independent journalist

【During the times of Najib or Tun M, freedom of speech was restrained】

Malaysia's position in the 2022 World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is a good and proud achievement for the country. In a Facebook post today, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said that it also serves as a catalyst for the government to continue to enhance media freedom in Malaysia. In the index, Malaysia's position improved to 113 with 51.55 points compared to the previous year's position of 119 (60.53 points). Journalist Chris Lau agrees with YB Fahmi's statement on media freedom. This is because since the first time the PH government came into power in 2018, media freedom has been increasingly allowed to cover both the government and the opposition. This is seen as very encouraging for outspoken media practitioners. Unlike during the time of Tun M and Najib, where anyone who dared to criticize the government was likely to be arrested.

    ———————————

    Abun Sui, PKR Sarawak Senator

【100 MyKad applicants have been forward to Ministry of internal affairs】

Currently, he has around 100 applicants statewide who have been forwarded to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for further action. In June, the ministry is expected to make some decisions. At the moment, they are still collecting more documents. Some have birth certificates but are having citizenship or permanent residency issues, while some are still in the process of finalization. Others have no personal documents at all. According to his records, most applicants are from the Bintulu-Miri area and other areas. Some have called in but have yet to provide copies of their documents. He is also following up on previous applicants whose applications are still in progress. By the end of this month, he will follow up on whatever he had submitted to the ministry. He will bring up the issue of traditional marriage registration in longhouses to be made acceptable for easy marriage registration for people living in the interior in the upcoming Dewan Negara sitting. This is because many rural couples cannot register their newborn children as they do not have legal marriage certificates.

*The issue of workers in the logging industry has been ongoing*

Apolinar Tolentino, the Asia Pacific Representative for International Workers, stated that vulnerabilities in the MTCS scheme let timber companies get away with withholding foreign workers' passports and paying wages below the minimum wage.

Dr Elie Luhat admitted that this was an issue he faced decades ago while serving as a member of the "task force for Sarawak manpower" while working with STIDC. He did not expect that these problems still remain unaddressed. He hopes that the new Prime Minister of Malaysia will choose an experienced person to find a solution to this problem. If it is not resolved quickly, it will affect the country's image and the Prime Minister's reputation. He is willing to volunteer if asked to do so.

Ngang Kuja from Long Tanyit-Linau stated that he has worked with Shin Yang Logging Company for more than 10 years, but the salary offered is only RM1300. Due to the recent implementation of FMU, his salary has increased slightly to RM1500. However, with the increase in the price of goods, RM1500 is not enough. According to Ngang, Shin Yang has started to reduce the hiring of foreign workers to meet FMU requirements. When asked if foreign workers' passports are kept by the employer, he is not sure. However, according to him, foreign workers are free to quit their jobs if they do not agree with the offered salary.

Dennis Along, head of information PKR Baram

*PKR Baram is currently collecting the names of Mykad victims and helps them to get Mykad*
Lawas cancer patient Lina Samuel, who made headlines after she was stripped of her MyKad, died on Tuesday, Earlier this month, Lina’s concern about getting follow-up cancer treatment in Miri because her MyKad had been seized by the National Registration Department (JPN) in Lawas last November made the rounds on social media.

Lina, 65, caught the attention of the Indonesian consulate when her story made headlines in the news last month, after she alleged that JPN in Lawas had confiscated her MyKad in November last year.

Dennis expressed his regret and anger that Lina did not receive her MyKad before she passed away, despite being a Malaysian citizen she was treated as an Indonesian citizen. He pointed out that there are many cases of MyKad issues in the interior regions, and PKR Baram is currently collecting a list of names and application forms for those who do not have a MyKad to be submitted to the relevant authorities for processing. He emphasized that this is not a singular issue, and the Sarawak government should pay attention to the MyKad problems faced by the interior people instead of repeatedly causing difficulties for them.

    ---------------------------

Sevan Doraisamy, Executive Director of SUARAM
*Anwar is no stranger to reformasi, and UMNO should not be an obstacle to reformasi*
If measured by the standards of the United Nations and international human rights, Malaysia is regressing in its efforts to uphold human rights. Laws that violate human rights, such as the Peaceful Assembly Act and the Sedition Act, still exist, and the government has not taken any action to remove or amend them.

Sevan has stated that previous prime ministers have not spoken up for human rights and have been embroiled in corruption cases. However, the tenth prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, has been defending human rights for the past 20 years as an opposition party member, and therefore has the potential to be a reformist prime minister. If he fails to make progress, he will be seen as a failed prime minister

Anwar is no stranger to reformasi, so if he finds the right approach, he can initiate reforms, including freedom of speech and peaceful assembly, which are responsibilities of the coalition government. In the past few decades, they have also been victims of human rights violations while they were in the opposition party.

Reforms are also needed in other areas such as the judiciary and the Anti-Corruption Commission. This is not just a problem for Prime Minister Anwar but also for his ministers. For example, the Minister of Home Affairs was once a member of the opposition party, but now he says that he needs to study the laws that need to be amended or repealed (such as the Universities and University Colleges Act). However, NGOs have been studying this issue for decades, and now it is time to put it into practice.
He emphasized that if ministers or the prime minister feel pressure, they should not be in government. UMNO should not be an obstacle to the reformasi issue.

    ---------------------------

Thomas Jalong, environmental activist from Baram

*Deforestation is directly related to climate change, which is why EUDR to combat forest destruction*

The EU parliament approved the EU Timber Regulation (EUDR) because it believes that one of the reasons why climate change is becoming increasingly serious globally is due to deforestation. However, the details of the regulations are yet to be known. Large-scale deforestation is also contributing to climate change, which is why the EU has taken the initiative to reduce the cutting down or destruction of forests, particularly tropical forests. An international resolution has also been made by the United Nations, which outlines actions to be taken by countries related to forests.

    - Today, the US court found rapper Pras Michel guilty of conspiring to lobby back channels to end the investigation into Jho Low (1MDB scandal)

    - Yesterday, the Swiss court filed charges against two Petrosaudi officials believed to be Tarek Obaid and Patrick Mahoney for receiving illicit money from Good Star (1MDB scandal)

    - so it would be morally and ethically wrong to pardon Najib. Meanwhile, the overall investigation into the 1MDB scandal is still ongoing worldwide.

    -----------------------------

    Iswardy Morni, Political analyst

*Anwar acted wisely and cautiously, which is why the reform is slowing down*

Leaders of the Opposition Party are trying hard to tarnish the image of PMX through the Aidilfitri Open House Program that will be held in the six states that will hold elections next July. They labeled the council as a waste of people's money, abuse of power, misuse of government machinery and challenging the dignity of the state government. This all shows the opposition state's fear of Madani's influence and concept brought by PMX - according to Iswardy.

Iswardy explained that every prime minister is given an allocation for a holiday event and it is up to the prime minister to hold an open house event anywhere with the amount of allocation that has been approved in the 2023 budget.

John Berthelsen wrote a Long article in the Asia Sentinel. Among John's criticisms, Reform is moving slowly under the administration of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Due to the participation of UMNO/BN and GPS in the Unity government. Iswardy admits that this statement is true, but according to Iswardy it is better to slow down than to stall the reform. Without the participation of UMNO/BN and GPS, Anwar will not be able to rule. This means the reform is stuck. However, with Anwar's wisdom, the Malaysian government today is still better. Although the reforms that Anwar wanted to bring were somewhat stuck. Anwar was not free to act because he was pressured by UMNO. But until now Anwar seems to still maintain his popularity and integrity by not interfering in judicial affairs, no corruption and abuse of power. Anwar acted wisely and cautiously.

    -----------------------------

    Mahmud Epah, PKR Asa Jaya

*Oppose building casinos, prioritize developing natural landscape tourism*

The individual opinion, he says that the economic situation in Sarawak is not suitable for building casinos, and the economic conditions of the people do not allow for it. Sarawak is not suitable for building casinos in any location.

He mentioned that Sarawak has natural landscapes to attract tourists, which is its biggest feature, and he does not understand why the GPS government wants to build casinos to attract tourists. Instead, he suggests that the Sarawak government should focus on promoting natural landscapes as tourist destinations.
He also suggests that the GPS Sarawak government should focus on promoting natural landscapes as tourist destinations instead of planning other projects that do not fit with the current situation in Sarawak, as the tourism industry in Sarawak has stagnated.
He also says that there are many policies in Sarawak that do not benefit the people, especially small business owners who have not received relevant benefits. Therefore, they urge the GPS government to solve these problems first, so that Sarawak businesses can operate well, before considering attracting foreign investors to open casinos.

    -----------------------------

    Joy Ismail of Tasik Chini

*Water woes for Tasik Chini Orang Asli persist as lake remains polluted*

In July last year, Malaysiakini reported that Orang Asli villagers living near Tasik Chini were facing water woes despite residing right next to the second-largest natural freshwater lake in Peninsular Malaysia. This was due to the lake water being deemed unsafe for consumption because of pollution in recent years.

And till now, the community still facing the same problem.

Joy Ismail said that, they have been facing no water or very low pressure from their paip for many years as of now.  But the worse is in recent months and during Hari Raya, where people have to use more water.  They now have dig well to get water for washing clothes.  Clean water supply by trucks twice a day also still insufficient. Their village is situated at a higher area and thus difficult to get water.  They have brought up our issues to their YB.  Even YB has raised up the issue,  but still no action taken by the relevant authority. They hope that our government and relevant authority can work out to address this water supply as soon as possible

    -----------------------------

    Teacher George from Kuching

*Students need to wear masks when they return to school*

Media reported that Students may be required to wear face masks again as they return to school on May 2, amid concerns over the spread of the new Covid-19 variant, XBB.1.16 or Arcturus, which is highly contagious.

Teacher George from Kuching agrees that all teachers and students should be required to wear face masks as a precautionary measure against the spread of the outbreak. However, he hopes that this outbreak will not be as severe as COVID-19, as its effects on student learning in schools were very detrimental.

Remote learning was not effective due to students in rural areas not having access to the internet, resulting in a decline in student achievement, which is very concerning.

> Jofree Jaraee, Sarawak PAS Commissioner – PAS Sarawak said NO to Casino in Sarawak
> Agnes from Mukah, small pepper farmer – urge the GPS gov to provide technology while also solving the issue of fertilizers

  • Special Randau

    - Switzerland’s prosecutor has indicted two former executives at PetroSaudi, the Geneva-based oil production company, for helping to embezzle $1.8bn from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, 1MDB, therefore the pardon of Najib is not correct/appropriate/fitting as governments around the world are still actively prosecuting and punishing all those involved in the 1MDB scandal

    ---------------------------

    Nick Kelesau, Penan activist

*Wild boars died of disease, and the Sarawak government needs to send people to investigate*

It seems that wild boars in the inland areas have been infected with a disease and died, and gradually there are fewer and fewer traces of wild boars in the forest. This happened during the epidemic period, and there seems to be no improvement after the epidemic.
RFS received a public report that wild boars seemed to be infected with a disease and died, but it was uncertain what bacterial infection it was, and the government did not send anyone to investigate.

Nick Kelesau said that the traces of wild boars have not been seen for a long time. During the epidemic, he found wild boars that died of illness in the forest, but he never saw any wild boars again afterwards. Inland people have not hunted wild boars for a long time.

He believes that it is an infection with a pathogen, and it is also possible that outsiders entered the inland through the mountain road and hunted wild boars recklessly, causing the decrease in the number of wild boars. However, he also stated that the government has not investigated this matter.

He pointed out that inland people, especially the Ben Nan people, have not eaten pork for a long time. Deer, four-legged snakes, and other animals can still be hunted. Nowadays, the price of pork on the market is soaring, and many inland people cannot afford the high price of pork, so they seldom eat pork.

He hopes that the relevant authorities can pay attention to this matter because the reasons for the reduction in the number of wild boars must be found, and the reduction in the number of wild boars is more or less related to ecology.

    --------------------------

    Jofree Jaraee, Sarawak PAS Commissioner

*PAS Sarawak said NO to Casino in Sarawak*

Jofree criticized the views of Sarawak Tourism Minister Karim Rahman Hamzah, who proposed the construction of a Casino at the Borneo Highlands Resort Tourism Center as an effort to attract tourists and increase the state's income. According to Jaraee this is not the right way. This will add to the problem of people who will be addicted to gambling. Even now the people are facing the problem of gambling addiction - Magnum, Toto and lottery shops. If the Casino center is approved, it will add to the problem of gambling in Sarawak. This will increase the chance of social problems, mortgaged land and moral damage. Regarding the proposal for Sarawak to open its own airline, called BUTIK - Jaraee agreed with the proposal as a measure to reduce the burden of flight costs which he compared to buying a flight ticket abroad. Commenting on the Takbir Hari Raya program organized by PN on TV3 which was canceled at the last minute. Jaraee condemned the action of the central government which canceled the program which was actually motivated by religion and harmony. According to Jaraee, all parties should be given the right to appear on TV and radio. Jaraee also objected to the Prime Minister's open house program in 6 states that will hold state elections. If there is a unity motive, it should also be held in the state of Borneo, said Jaraee.

    ---------------------------

Agnes from Mukah, small pepper farmer

*urge the GPS gov to provide technology while also solving the issue of fertilizers*

New technology and methods are needed to boost the pepper industry in Sarawak, included the use of new hybrid planting materials and greenhouses to increase production while reducing labour, says Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

Initially, Pn Agnes planted over 1000 pepper trees, but now only about 300 trees are still alive and producing yields. Initially, the Department of Agriculture provided training to the longhouse communities on how to grow peppers. However, the price of fertilizer has increased while the price of peppers in and around Mukah and Selangau is only RM6 per kilo. Pn Agnes is forced to transport her pepper yields far to Sarikei to sell for a higher price of around RM12 per kilo, which is a 2-3 hour journey from Mukah to Sarikei.

Another reason for the lack of fertility in crops for small farmers in the Mukah area is air pollution coming from the Mukah aluminum processing plant, the smelter plant. Since the plant was built, it has been difficult for farmers to maintain their crops as fresh as before the plant was constructed. Additionally, the health of the local community has also suffered greatly.

  • *Special Randau*

Sarawak's rural residents are demanding that Anwar's administration address citizenship and MYKAD issues during its tenure. If these issues are not resolved quickly, they may become like a terminal cancer that may not be curable.

    =================

Agnes Padan, the Mykad activist ad Women's Leader of the Malaysian National Party
*Anwar was urged to act to give rights to citizens who do not have an identity card*

Agnes reported that, Lina Samuel- Sufferer of Stage 4 Colon cancer whose MYKAD was recently confiscated by JPN/KDN. She died at Lawas Hospital at 7 this morning. There was no clear reason given by JPN why his MYKAD was confiscated, apart from being informed that the case is still being investigated and the deceased is suspected to be Indonesian. Agnes insisted that if a case is still under investigation there is no need to confiscate the late Mrs. Lina's MYKAD and the withdrawal of citizenship rights/status should be done in an orderly manner and in accordance with the law and the constitution. What happened to Mrs. Lina added pressure on a 65-year-old woman who is fighting cancer. There are many cases of elderly people still without identity cards in LAWAS/Sarawak. The case involves Basar Arun and Joseph Pengirang - both are over 70 and have fought to defend the sovereignty of this country during the emergency and confrontation against Indonesia. They were given a bravery medal/medal by Queen Elizabeth-for risking their lives fighting against the enemy of the country. Agnes requested that PMX Anwar Ibrahim's administration take the field, understand the problems facing the people of Sarawak that have not been resolved for a long time. There are so many problems faced by the rural communities of Sarawak who do not have identity cards. They are denied their rights as citizens, the right to health care, educational opportunities and employment. We hope that PMX will immediately mobilize efforts to give rights to all citizens.

    =================

Barnie Lasimbang, environment and human rights activist
*is EU also include NCR as classification deforestation?*

Pertaining to EU parliament to approve EUDR is acceptable because the purpose is reduce forest degradation globally to produce sustainable via environmental friendly system. Especially products from agriculture area that were in the first place was forest. but what we concern is that the said regulations are not quite clear the meaning of deforestation . Because all those agriculture areas are originally forest area. So it is quite difficult to say that all those products are  non deforestation process. So this will give negative impact on tropical products like Malaysia. 90 percents agriculture areas are originally forest areas. So it direct impact on Sarawak Sabah economy.

His concern also on areas like Temuda, or cultivated areas which are originally the NCR are mostly planted commercial cash crops such as oil palm, rubber and etc. So is EU also include NCR as classification deforestation?

    =================

Jeffrery Ngui, President of Muda Sarawak
*The Sarawak government must effectively manage the tourism industry instead of just talking about plans*

The Sarawak government plans to build a casino in Sarawak to attract tourists. In response to this, Jeffrey expressed his agreement but emphasized that the image must be positive and the brand must be positioned in a positive way.

He said that the casino can attract different types of tourists to Sarawak. In addition to the natural scenery and national parks, if the casino is successful and has a positive effect, it can bring more tourism to Sarawak.

He pointed out that the tourism industry in Sarawak is not thriving because the state government is not actively promoting it. Some areas used to have theme parks that could attract families to play, but they were closed due to mismanagement.

He also stated that many tourist attractions in the state are gradually being forgotten due to a lack of proper management. If even the people of Sarawak do not know which tourist destinations exist, let alone visitors from other places.

Therefore, he reiterated that the casino proposal is feasible, but the most important thing is that the Sarawak government must manage the tourism industry properly instead of neglecting it.

    =================

Mr Romuald Siew, President of Tahabas

*is time for community leaders to change the habit of politicizing oneself*

MP of Bintulu Datuk Tiong King Sing criticized the actions of some local representatives who treat the village and community leaders (KMKK) as party assets, deviating from the appointment's purpose of serving the people.

Without naming the representatives, the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture said that this unhealthy practice has received many complaints, including from well-performing leaders who may be expelled due to misunderstandings with the political party.
Romuald Siew from The Sarawak Native Customary Rights Land Network (TAHABAS) supporting the statement of MP Bintulu, comment that the attitude of this community leader is increasingly seen as more inclined towards politics because they have been trained by the ruling political party. Therefore, the community leader's attitude is more towards supporting the representative, but it is not too late for the statement from MP Bintulu because this is the time to change the habit of politicizing oneself.

    - Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Malaysia Is On Saturday

    - Plantation and commodities minister Fadillah Yusof slammed the European Union for passing the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), claiming that it was “unjust” to the palm oil industry in Malaysia.

    ---------------

Peter Kallang, Chairman of Save Rivers Network

*Forests don't need to be destroyed, but they can still provide great benefits*

A briefing was held regarding UBFA - UPPER BARAM FOREST AREA held on Wednesday.

According to Peter Kallang, the project is nearing implementation stage. It will involve an area of 283,500 hectares, covering 32 villages in forest areas. This is the only project in Sarawak that involves forest conservation with the participation of three countries and several local and international NGOs.
Malaysia, Korea, and Japan have expressed their commitment to contribute in terms of expertise, research, and finance. Meanwhile, several local and international NGOs will also do the same.
The UBFA project will go through several phases such as reforestation, road/bridge/infrastructure construction, telecommunications, and water resources. Several committees have been formed to ensure that each plan runs smoothly. Although there are still logging concession areas within the UBFA area, UBFA management will ensure that every logging activity adheres to the concept of environmental sustainability.
So far, logging has destroyed the environment and left forest destruction and river pollution to indigenous people. However, with the new concept of UBFA, logging may be replaced with better forest benefits such as "carbon traps". Simply put, forests don't need to be destroyed, but the benefits of the forest should be returned to the indigenous people. Peter believes that with the sincerity shown by the communities involved, the project is likely to succeed.

    ---------------

Irene Chang, DAP former Bukit Assek assemblywoman

*Don't hesitate to make an application, we'll assist you*

Irene Chang is dedicated to assisting Sarawakians who do not have a Malaysian identity card to apply for one. She explains that many people still do not understand what the different colors of the card represent in terms of identity.

ICs of a different colour represent different resident status.  they all represent different resident statuses

Most people will know about and have seen the blue card otherwise known as MyKad. Those are usually issued to Malaysian citizens at the age of 12 and shows that they are full-fledged citizens of the country.

If they have a red card otherwise known as MyPR, they are residents of Malaysia with a permanent resident status. For those with a green card or MyKAS, they are temporary residents, their card will need to be renewed every 5 years.

She explained that it is possible to apply to change from MyPR or MYKAS to MyKad, but the required conditions are complex, including the necessary documents and proof of good conduct and behavior, among other requirements, in order to make an application and wait for approval.

In the past, many applications were not approved, and although it is now a unity government, it is not yet time to judge how effective the unity government is in making the process of applying for a Malaysian identity card more convenient.

However, regardless of the government, people facing citizenship issues need to make their applications immediately in order to quickly resolve citizenship issues and obtain the benefits that citizens are entitled to.

People who facing the Mykad application problem, can contact RFS with hotline +60 13-551 5219.

    --------------

Nicholas Mujah, General Secretary of Sadia

*EU regulations are applied to ensure long-term environmental sustainability*

The EU is not cruel enough to block the sale of palm oil from smallholders, but the regulation is aimed at protecting the environment in the long term. According to Mujah, the EU will continue to purchase Malaysian palm oil as long as it complies with the criteria for sustainable palm oil cultivation. The EU has given a grace period of up to five years for compliance. The criteria include legal land ownership and proper licensing, respect for the rights, culture, and customary practices of indigenous communities, and the sustainability of the environment, including protected forest areas, water catchment areas, and historical and community interest areas. As long as everyone adheres to these regulations, the EU has no problem buying their commodity. Mujah emphasized that enforcing the EUDR regulations is crucial in addressing unethical land grabbing and deforestation of indigenous lands that are rampant in Sarawak.

    ---------------

Voon Lee Shan, President of Parti Bumi Kenyalang

*If there is a special holiday for Hari Raya, then the festivals of the Indian or Dayak communities should also have special holidays to show fairness*

Voon Lee Shan opines that having too many additional public holidays would not augur well for the country’s economy.

even the Mydin owner Ameer Ali Mydin also mentioned that, he additional public holiday for Hari Raya will put an unnecessary financial burden on businesses, his hypermarket business is set to lose RM500,000 because of it.

He said that the sudden increase in holidays would require employers to bear the cost of their employees' leave, and this cost would be passed on to goods or service providers, resulting in a chain reaction. As a result, consumers will face the problem of rising prices.

Voon said the special holidays for Raya is good news for working people, but, if one thinks carefully, this is not good news to working people, if there are too many leaves and holidays in the country. This is because leave and holidays can affect the economy and cause inflation.

In addition, excessive school holidays can also affect students' learning. Especially with the shift to online learning due to the past pandemic, it has been proven that the effectiveness is limited. Therefore, the lack of class time can slow down the progress of learning. Too many special holidays can also lead to difficulties in completing official duties, which must be extended continuously, resulting in inefficient work.

As Malaysia is a country with a diverse population, he also believes that if there are special holidays for Hari Raya, then other races, including Indians' festivals or Dayak's festivals, should also have special holidays to ensure fairness to every ethnic group.

For example, the Harvest Festival of the indigenous in east Malaysia, should not be limited to just Sabah and Sarawak holidays, but should be a national holiday. This would allow people from West Malaysia to travel to East Malaysia and learn about the customs and traditions of the region.

Gereng Jadum, Residents of Penan Metalun/Murum

*None of Penan appoint as tribal leaders, hope Senator Abun Sui can help them to voice out their problem*

Two weeks ago there was an oath-taking ceremony for the appointment of Kapit District Council (PBT) councillors, and a few months ago there was a new appointment and the extension of the service period of tribal chiefs- penghulu and penmanka in Belaga District. Gereng Jadum felt sad because none of the counselors and tribal leaders were appointed from the Penan Murum tribe. While Penan Murum has many problems.

He said that, If a community leader/counselor is not appointed from among them, How their problems will be able to be expressed. Their problems now are- no schools, no clinics, no roads/roads of logging companies, no Mykad, many children have dropped out of school and most unfortunately we have no source of income. The government that moved them to make way for the construction of the Murum Dam, did not take care of their welfare.

Gereng said that, they were not given lots of agricultural land for farming - food crops were not given. Therefore, they request YB Senator Abun Sui to come and visit them immediately to solve their problem. Because- all these problems they have voiced to YBs from GPS for a long time. But till today they failed to solve our problem. They really hope that Yb Senator will come to visit and see for himself their situation.

Jefferey Ngui, President of Muda Sarawak

*is good that free toll for Hari Raya, what about subsidy for flight to return Sabah and Sarawak?*

During the Hari Raya holiday, the unity government approved that the main highway’s toll fees in Peninsular will be free, so that drivers can enjoy free tolls to return home for the Hari Raya. MUDA welcomes this move, but also raises a question: Why is there no subsidy for the air tickets to Sabah and Sarawak to help East Malaysians return home?

Jeffery said expensive flights were nothing new. Air tickets to East Malaysia are expensive, and even the elderly have never left their homes taken a plane.

He said, often one-way is already thousands of ringgit, not to mention round-trip air tickets. These prices are unreasonable. There is no air ticket subsidy that can be enjoyed by the people of Sabah and Sarawak in every festive benefit project.

Coupled with the high prices in recent years, economic depression and other problems, financial constraints have made it impossible for many people in Sabah and Sarawak to afford expensive air tickets, and therefore unable to return to their hometowns to visit their families during the festival.

Regarding the boutique airline proposed by Abang johari a few days ago, Jeffrey raised a question: Is it a social enterprise? Are Gov Sarawak concerned about the people of Sarawak going back to their hometowns for the festival, and offer affordable and cheap air tickets, and are willing to bear losses? If it is a people-oriented project, it can naturally be supported. The Sarawak government must have a complete plan and make the project transparent. How to solve the loss problem? These all need to be shown to the people.

Abun Sui, Senator of PKR Sarawak

*Small holder in Belaga want to know why MPOB Belaga research station been closed?*

Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) research station in Sungai Asap, Belaga, have been closed without the knowledge of the residents who really need this station.
Senator Abun Sui said that, the station had previously been very helpful to local residents in terms of oil palm farming.

He received complaints from residents of Sungai Asap Belaga regarding the offline of MPOB research station in Sungai Asap, and when asked, only realize that the office is plastered with the name of a private limited company, but no one know why.

He said that the facility is very much needed by the many small oil palm farmers in the surrounding area. It is very important that the center can assist the small holder in that area with obtaining agricultural advisory services.

Abun sui said that, the alleged closure of the MPOB research station in Sungai Asap, Belaga, Sarawak needs to be taken seriously by the Ministry of Plantations and Commodities Malaysia.

*leading villagers fight for their rights and land*

Jeffrey Hassan leading the Orang Asli of Pos Lanai Kuala Lipis Pahang, last week having trial at Termeloh High Court to seek legalize ownership of their land and territories as they have in 2019 won their battle against the proposed Telom dam when the PH govt scrapped the project, which threatened their village underwater and as well as logging.

In the early stage of the project, they were forced to move to a settlement site without knowing that their land and territories was for dam construction.  But soon after that the community realised what was going on,  Jeffrey started to organised his community to fight for their rights to their land and territories with the help of NGOs and Lawyer.  In the beginning Jeffery was facing difficulties in organizing the community as some were not agree to fight. Dispite having to face difficulties, he has to struggle to take legal action and last week they were having trial on their case and will continue. He realizes that the struggle is not easy and taking long time.
