Green Light For Green Zones; Red Light For Rural Infrastructure | Broadcast 7 May 2020

ENGLISH - On today’s show, as the announcement goes out that government projects will go ahead in green zones, we speak to George Lagong, the former Pelagus state assemblyman from Nanga Antawau about whether Baleh dam should come under this. He tells us that the dam construction is still in its early stages so how can it be considered essential at this moment? According to SEB, he adds, the work has been ongoing through the MCO, a clear sign that they are prepared to put public health second to profits. With SEB racking up huge amounts as the monopoly energy provider in the state, perhaps they should be focusing on CSR activities with the communities instead of adding to the confusion of the MCO with unnecessary construction.

Meanwhile, back in Miri, many of the big hotels have been commandeered as quarantine zones. Tuan Jimmy wonders why so many of these private sector operations, many of them owned by giant companies, should be put into service in this way. It seems like this is more of a sign of sick hospital projects than any other with so little capacity in the healthcare service in Sarawak. Sri Aman, for example, despite numerous land breaking ceremonies, has yet to get off the ground.

Then Indai Lala of Julau highlights lack of facilities of a different kind. She tells us that people are still queuing for ATMs in the area. As the population of the area has grown, there has still been no investment in infrastructure, leaving the people to drive all the way to Sibu for basic services, now not even an option under MCO. Yet, incomes have not risen either, with the price of pepper still low. Why is the government so obsessed by oil palm, she asks? Why not pepper or even paper?

Then we speak to Muni who lived without an identity until the age of 30. After her parents passed away when she was young, her aunties adopted her but with no paperwork and no living parents, she was unable to get registered. Pressured to drop out of primary school, ashamed of her invisible status, she has been forced into a life of low paid labour. Finally, however, she was able to get her IC through JPN two years ago and while she is relieved, she still wonders why it took so long for her and yet others, born overseas, seem able to get one without the same trouble.

We end with Joseph Philip from Hak Asak Rakyat Untuk Sabah (Harus) on stateless issues facing the people of Sabah.
