  • Peter Kallang, Chairman of Save Rivers

*Contradictory Actions: Samling's Lawsuit Against SAVE Rivers and Praise for their Work - Greenwashing or Genuine Intent?*

Samling has filed a lawsuit against SAVE Rivers, an environmental organization, focusing on eight articles published on SAVE Rivers' website from June 2020 to March 2021. According to the plaintiffs, these articles contain false statements regarding Samling's efforts to obtain sustainable forestry certification. They are seeking 5 million ringgit in damages and a restraining order against SAVE Rivers and its directors. This lawsuit has faced criticism from 160 organizations, who argue that it is a strategic litigation against public participation (SLAPP) case. They believe that the substantial fine could potentially bankrupt SAVE Rivers and its directors, suggesting an attempt to suppress public criticism.

However, it has recently Samling posted a photo on their website showcasing the work of SAVE Rivers. The photo is featured in a section titled "Engaging and Supporting Local Communities." Unfortunately, the webpage erroneously claims that all the photos are credited to Samling's staff.

Peter Kallang, in response to this, has accused Samling of greenwashing. He does not understand the purpose behind Samling's decision to sue SAVE Rivers while simultaneously praising their work.

Peter Kallang emphasizes that any project involving communities should adhere to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aiming to fulfill sustainable development while ensuring that no one is left behind. According to Kallang, any project that affects communities should also provide benefits to those communities, rather than solely benefiting the companies involved and neglecting societal concerns. He believes that this approach is not aligned with the principles of the SDGs.

    Asraf, Bersih Steering Committee

*State Governments Should Officially Inform the EC of the Early Dissolution Date of the State Assembly*

Bersih insists that the uncertainty of the election date is something that burdens and unsettles the public and businesses who are awaiting the announcement of voting day for the state elections (PRN) for six states this year.

Although BERSIH is aware that there are some Menteri Besar/Chief Ministers who have already approached the Sultan/Yang di Pertua state to get approval for the dissolution of their respective State Legislature (DUN), but until now there are still some who have not officially informed the EC about date of dissolution.

BERSIH calls for all states to act responsibly by officially informing the EC of the planned dissolution date, either automatically at the end of the term or earlier with the approval of the Palace. This allows the EC to determine the nomination date and voting day immediately because the EC does not need to wait for the dissolution to happen, instead only requiring official notification from the State Government.

YB Chiew Choon Mun, PKR MP for Miri

*Affordable Housing Crisis in Miri: High Prices Force Relocation, Calls for Government Intervention*

Due to soaring housing prices, residents in both urban and suburban areas are finding it increasingly difficult to afford homes. The situation is particularly dire in Tukau, on the outskirts of Miri, where the cost of living has compelled many to relocate, leaving them unable to purchase homes.

Chiew, suggests that the Sarawak government should take inspiration from the housing policy implemented by the Selangor state government. This policy focuses on providing low-cost flats, enabling financially disadvantaged individuals to own homes with minimal financial burden.

Chiew further emphasizes the need for the GPS government to regulate construction costs and housing prices in Miri City. Without such intervention, residents of Miri will be burdened with lifelong housing loans without being able to fully enjoy their homes.

Hj Yahya, Head of UsahaJaya Tukau village Miri

*Anger Mounts as Compensation Denied and Political Representatives Neglect the People*

Hj Yahya shared a report with Radio Free Sarawak.

yesterday he and two other people attended the mention case in Court and he (Hj Yahya) will have a hearing on 05.09.2023.

According to Hj Yahya, the work of cleaning the area by Land and survey and the developer will still be carried out this Saturday, which is tomorrow. But unfortunately because even one cent of compensation will be given to the people of the village.

Hj Yahya is very angry with Taib Mahmud's family such as Datuk Raziah who do not care about the fate of the people and are willing to let the people vacate the place without compensation.

Hj Yahya is also determined to bring the people from Kampung Usaha Jaya Tukau Miri to reject the GPS because their representatives YB Ripin and YB Lukanisman also did not come down to see the people's situation. Hj Yahya will not collude with the GPS leadership in the future.
