  • Roland Engan, Sarawak PKR Chairman

*Urges Collaborative Action for Basic Facilities and Environmental Protection in Baram*

Madani Politics in the Unity government. Roland explained that he is ready to cooperate with Baram Member of Parliament Yb Anyie Ngau (GPS) to ensure that basic facilities can be built immediately for the convenience of Baram residents.

Among the problems that have not yet been resolved are the lack of identity documents, roads, telecommunication/internet facilities, education, health, clean water supply and 24-hour electricity supply to Panjang villages/homes in Baram.

In line with the principles of Civil Malaysia and the formation of a unity government at the Federal Level. So the state government should support all the efforts brought by the federal leaders to bring basic facilities to the people of Baram as soon as possible - even if there is no formation of a unity government at the state level.

PKR will continue to rebuke the GPS Sarawak government's policies related to logging and the environment if they are contrary to the requirements of local and international laws. But will be conveyed in the politics of diplomacy, instead of provocation. This is to ensure that the administration of the unity government is not affected. Roland insisted that the GPS Sarawak government's logging policy has caused environmental/climate change problems and affected the local population. Therefore, logging should be reduced and eventually stopped/Zero logging.

Thomas Fann, Chairperson of Bersih 2.0

*Bersih Urges PM Annuar to Ensure Fairness and Accountability in Election Commission Appointment*

Bersih urges Prime Minister Annuar Ibrahim to promise fairness and accountability. There is a misunderstanding regarding the vacant seat in the Election Commission (SPR), which must be filled by a person from Sabah.

Bersih believe this is a great opportunity for Anwar to demonstrate his commitment to election system reform by appointing an additional election commissioner. According to the constitution, he has the power to make the appointment without a working committee. Later, the King will confirm the appointment.

Regarding the vacant position, he can request the JPKP Parliamentary Special Select Committee to review any candidate who wishes to join the election commission. This will prevent accusations that Annuar is favoring his own people. The JPKP consists of members of parliament who can appoint an individual with expertise to represent the interests of Sabah in the election commission.

Bersih believe this is a positive and new practice in making important appointments for all agencies, free from the influence of the Prime Minister, as we have seen in the past. Bersih hope Annuar Ibrahim will heed their advice.

As for the upcoming elections in the six states, which must be held by the end of August 2023, Bersih hope the Election Commission will make adequate preparations. Firstly, they can set a common date for all six states. Based on Bersih understanding, all six state assemblies will be dissolved by the end of June, as stated in the constitution. The Election Commission must then conduct the elections within 60 days from the dissolution.

Abun Sui, PKR Senator from Sarawak

*Former Sarawak Border Scouts Struggle with Citizenship Status, Seek Assistance from Madani Government*

The Association of Former Sarawak Police has identified that five members of the Sarawak Border Scouts who served during the era of the Sarawak Constabulary do not possess citizenship status. They are aged 80 years and above, and due to their lack of citizenship, they are required to pay for medical treatment at clinics. They are unable to seek treatment in Miri through Brunei and are forced to rely on expensive air travel. Currently, they only possess ordinary documents supported and signed by village chiefs or community leaders.

Abun Sui expressed that if the information is true, this should not have happened.

Currently, under the Madani government, it is believed that assistance can be provided to these five Border Scouts to obtain their identification documents. He will bring this matter to the Parliament in order to address their citizenship issues.

He stated that if there is any discrimination or mistreatment towards Sarawak's indigenous people during the process of applying for citizenship, it must be dealt with. According to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), Sarawak has the autonomy to handle citizen registration.

    Wesley from Miri

*Sarawak's Economic Growth versus People's Realities*

Sarawak’s economy is projected to grow between five and six per cent this year, said Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg. He said this year also marks the third year of the implementation of the state’s ambitious Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, and despite the many challenges the state’s economy is recovering.

Wesley, as a working individual, shares his perspective on the 5-6% economic growth mentioned by Abang Jo. He states that the so-called economic growth does not directly benefit the people; only a few individuals reap the benefits. In Miri, although there is an increase in new commercial properties, their prices have also risen, making it unaffordable for the people to purchase homes or start businesses. Despite the financial aid provided, a one-time sum of a few hundred ringgit is insufficient to cover the recurring expenses each month. The rising cost of living has made it extremely challenging for the people to cope with basic daily expenses.

He expresses that although Sarawak's economy may be growing, it is not helpful for the people. Wesley believes that the GPS government should take immediate action to address the difficulties faced by the people.
