Last Thursday, Patricia Helen of Ba Abang informed RFS that the community is currently setup a blockade to prevent GT interhill from entering their customary land. RFS took this opportunity to ask the assemblyman whether he would assist/support the community.
YB Dennis Ngau said that he doesn’t know how to help those Penan people, they should complain through normal channels, and if they report the issue to the police, then police will investigate it. He said that the logging company has a license approved by the government to carry out the logging project. If there is any problem, it needs to be dealt with by the relevant unit.
When asked whether he would solidarity with the community, he said No. The problem must be solved according to the procedures, that is, contact the DO, and then report the problem to the Forestry Bureau and other relevant units. If there is something wrongdoing, then sit down and talk.
He said that there was no village chief in that village, and the government appointed one for them.
RFS asked: whether GT interhill has made free prior and informed consent to the communities involved before obtaining the government's license to log into the forest? Is there a Due diligence?
RFS will continue to follow up and report on the case.

Khamis yang lalu, Patricia Helen dari Ba Abang memaklumkan RFS bahawa masyarakat Penan sedang membuat sekatan untuk menghalang GT interhill daripada memasuki tanah adat mereka. RFS mengambil kesempatan ini untuk bertanya kepada ADUN Telang Usan sama ada beliau akan membantu/menyokong mereka?
YB Dennis Ngau berkata bahawa dia tidak tahu bagaimana untuk membantu orang Penan itu, mereka harus mengadu melalui saluran biasa, dan jika mereka melaporkan isu itu kepada polis, maka polis akan menyiasatnya. Katanya, syarikat pembalakan itu mempunyai lesen yang diluluskan kerajaan untuk menjalankan projek pembalakan itu. Sekiranya terdapat sebarang masalah, ia perlu ditangani oleh unit berkenaan.
Ketika ditanya sama ada beliau akan bersolidariti dengan masyarakat, beliau berkata Tidak. Masalah itu mesti diselesaikan mengikut prosedur, iaitu menghubungi DO, dan kemudian melaporkan masalah itu kepada Biro Perhutanan dan unit lain yang berkaitan. Jika ada sesuatu yang salah, maka duduk dan bercakap.
Katanya, tiada ketua kampung di kampung itu, dan kerajaan melantik seorang untuk mereka.
RFS bersoal:
sama ada GT interhill melaksanakan FPIC kepada kommuniti Penan di Ba ABang sebelum mendapatkan lesen kerajaan untuk masuk ke dalam hutan membalak hutan? RFS akan terus membuat susulan dan melaporkan kes tersebut.
