    > Carbon trading, only owners of Native Customary Rights (NCR) land are allowed to participate or obtain carbon trading licenses. But the question is, who has the authority to grant ownership of NCR land? It's the state government.

    ---------------------

Roland Engan, Chairman of the Sarawak PKR

*Carbon Trading in Sarawak: Who Reaps the Benefits?*

In the keynote speech at the Carbon Asia conference on 15 March 2023 which took place in Kuching. The Sarawak Premier expects that Sarawak will earn RM315 million to RM1.039 billion a year through Carbon trading. We agree with carbon trading for economic benefits and environmental sustainability. We maintain the forest and stop this logging (Zero logging) which PKR Baram proposed more than a year ago - according to Roland. But we still question who benefits the most when this carbon trading is implemented. Will Orang Asal also get a share of the carbon trading revenue? asked Roland. Or licensees and concession holders will be given and monopolized by giant logging and plantation companies that have been destroying and polluting the environment. We Sarawakians want laws that favor the people, not capitalist companies. Roland lashed out at the Sarawak Government under the leadership of GPS which wants carbon emissions but still allows/gives licenses to loggers. This is the difference between our policy when compared to GPS. Roland wants the proceeds of carbon trading to be paid directly to the people who look after/own the forest where the carbon is obtained.

Another thing that the people should be aware of according to Roland, the Carbon Trading and Land Affairs Bill (to be presented in November 2023) will give the state government the right to control, dominate and collect revenue not only from the forest but also what is in the land , rivers and in the air (including carbon). This all gives results to the state government but not to the poor people who own land, rivers and forests. Roland urged the people of Sarawak to elect a government that safeguards their rights and at the same time provides economic prosperity. Regarding the GPS issue, all 82 state assembly seats will be contested in PRN13 Sarawak. Roland stressed that PH and PKR Sarawak are ready at any time to replace GPS to govern Sarawak. With the awareness of the majority of the people will give hope for change.

Jeffrey Ngui, chairman of MUDA Sarawak

*GPS Persists with ART, but Fails to Solve Traffic Realities*

Sarawak now has an Automated Rapid Transit (ART) system, which is currently in the testing and data collection phase. Will it effectively address traffic congestion in both Samarahan and Kuching?

Despite criticisms from the public, including those raised in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN), ART has finally been introduced in Kuching. It appears that GPS state government is determined to proceed with this project.

However, the question remains: why do we need ART? Its designated route is from Kota Samarahan to alleviate traffic issues in that area. Can this ART system truly resolve the traffic problems in Kota Samarahan?

Jeffrery said that, currently, we have hydrogen and electric buses that remain unused and are parked at the old DUN building. Now, with the introduction of ART, which can transport hundreds of passengers, we have a more visually appealing and modern alternative. ART operates on rubber tires and is touted to be more cost-effective than Light Rail Transit (LRT), which requires expensive rail infrastructure.

ART has the capacity to accommodate 300 passengers, but the question arises: do we have a sufficient number of passengers to fill it? Public buses faced challenges in the past, with limited success. In earlier times, they were more popular due to lower car ownership rates.

Given the evolving circumstances, self-driving options have become increasingly important. Are the people of Samarahan willing to rely on ART as their primary mode of transportation for commuting to work or sending their children to school? Will it replace services like Grab, motorcycles, and private cars? So far, it doesn't seem to be heading in that direction.

Peter Hee, the leader of Dapsy Sarawak

*Dapsy Sarawak Urges Government Action for Affordable Local Rice*

The Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak has urged the state government to take immediate actions to ensure that Sarawak residents have access to affordable locally-produced white rice.

Peter Hee, expressed concern over the rising prices of imported rice, attributed to supply issues and increased transportation costs. Recently, Bernas announced a significant increase in the wholesale price of imported white rice, from RM2,350 per tonne to RM3,200 per tonne, effective this month.

Hee pointed out that many Sarawakians are compelled to buy costly imported rice because most local vendors do not offer locally-produced white rice.

He stated, The people of Sarawak have no other alternatives and are compelled to purchase expensive imported rice.

Hee proposed that the Sarawak government take steps to reduce the reliance on imported rice, promote local rice cultivation, safeguard food safety, and ensure a stable supply and pricing of locally-produced white rice.

He emphasized that, across Malaysia, Sarawak is the only region lacking access to affordable locally-produced white rice. The Sarawak government bears responsibility for this shortfall.

Hee also cautioned that it would be a grave dereliction of duty if Sarawak residents were unable to afford the benefits of reasonably priced local rice.

    1) Zahid Hamidi was released without being acquitted of all 47 charges of corruption, breach of trust, and money laundering involving funds from the Akalbudi Foundation. Who released Zahid? Anwar or the court?

    2) In the Pulai parliamentary by-election, the PN Chairman urges voters to support the PN candidate to deny PMX's current two-thirds majority in Parliament. If the government implements a redelineation of electoral constituencies, it may disadvantage the Malay community. Muhyiddin Yassin holds an excessively ethnocentric view. Redelineation should benefit the entire population.

    3) Sarawak Issues: 1. GPS will contest 82 seats in PRN13. Petronas has paid SST to Sarawak totaling 13 billion ringgit until August, and the Carbon Trading Bill will be brought to the Sarawak State Assembly in November 2023

    -------------

Iswardy Morni, Political Analyst from Sarawak

*PRN13 Sarawak: GPS want to Oust PH Sarawak from Power*

Iswardy give his opinion on 3 issues related to the Sarawak GPS government. That is, Sarawak Premier Abang Johari stated that in PRN13 Sarawak which is expected in 2026 or at the latest on April 15, 2027. GPS will not compromise to give state assembly seats to friends in the unity government. Because not a member of the coalition at the state government level. For Iswardy - this open statement by the Premier of Sarawak gives a clear indication that GPS wants absolute power at the state level at the same time this will strengthen their dominance at the parliamentary level. With that strength will allow GPS to have enough bargaining power. This means that PH Sarawak can criticize the wrongdoing of the GPS administration in Sarawak and PH Sarawak's preparations for the state election should start from now.

Petronas group president/chief executive Tan sri Muhammad Taufik revealed that until August 2023, Petronas has paid SST- RM13 billion to Sarawak and RM8 billion to Sabah. This payment is made monthly. According to Iswardy, money is not a problem for Sarawak. On the other hand, the big problem for Sarawak is efficient management, good governance and priorities. Many mega projects are implemented not for the people. But implemented to benefit cronies. Therefore, according to Iswardy, the upcoming PRN13 Sarawak is an important moment to get rid of the capitalists/taukeh who control the movement and behavior of GPS politicians in Sarawak. The people of Sarawak have a great responsibility to make changes. At the federal level, the government led by Anwar Ibrahim is doing it and PRN13 is an opportunity for the people of Sarawak to kick out the big taukehs who have controlled all the state's revenue all this time

GPS in November 2023, will present the carbon trading and land affairs bill. Will it benefit the people of Sarawak? Iswardy thinks that the number of opposition in the Sarawak State Assembly is too small, so that GPS can do anything. All laws passed by GPS are for the benefit of the capitalists who have financed their election campaigns all this time. The people of Sarawak must unite to get rid of GPS.

    -------------

    Mahmud Epah, PKR Asajaya

*Rethinking Youth Employment: A Critique of Sarawak's Approach*

"Some 1.5 million jobs are expected to be created in Sarawak up to the year 2030," announced Deputy Premier Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. He further explained that these job opportunities would be the result of various programs and initiatives outlined in the state's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. One of the primary objectives of this strategy is to increase the income of the people of Sarawak. Out of the total projected job opportunities (1.5 million), approximately 200,000 of them will be in the technical or skilled sector.

However, Mahmud raises questions regarding GPS's approach, asking why they must wait until 2030 for these additional employment opportunities. He also asserts that GPS seems to lack a fundamental understanding of the challenges faced by young people. Mahmud contends that the issue goes beyond merely creating job opportunities; it also involves the necessity for skill development and avenues for personal and professional growth.

Mahmud emphasizes the importance of staying current with the times and argues that young people need to adapt to the new era by acquiring a diverse set of skills. He criticizes GPS for not adequately addressing this aspect. Instead, Mahmud believes that GPS is repeatedly presenting large figures (such as the promise of 1.5 million job opportunities) as a solution to the economic pressures faced by young people, which, in his view, falls short of addressing the underlying issues.

He strongly urges GPS to gain a better understanding of the realities and pressures experienced by young people and to create more opportunities for improvement and education among the youth.

    -------------

Fatimah of Ulu Tingkayu Lahad Datu

*Appeals Court Favoring the Company: Sabah Community to Appeal to the Federal Court*

The Sabah Court of Appeal, on August 29, 2023, dismissed the appeal made by Fatimah and others, who are smallholders of oil palm plantations. The case has its roots dating back to 2002 when Fatimah's late father, along with his friends and in-laws, cleared an area in Upper Tingkayu. They planted tapioca and oil palms in an area that was hours away from Lahad Datu in those days.

However, in 2020, they were confronted by a group of individuals acting as enforcers, seemingly on behalf of Mega Land oil palm plantation, who sought to forcibly remove them from the area. The community demanded an explanation from these enforcers, who had been ordered by Mega Land, and resisted their efforts. They lodged police reports and discovered that the land had been issued titles, even though the community had applied for titles for many years, facing various excuses from the Land and Survey Department.

Over the course of three months, the community faced intimidation, with even some villagers being assaulted. Initially, when unknown individuals entered their area, they believed it might have been a mistake. However, they later realized that land titles had only been issued in 2021.

In October 2021, the company presented land titles and ordered the villagers to vacate the area. The community was also surprised to receive a court letter, which they had never received before. In response, in 2021, Mega Land filed a summons against Fatimah and five others.

In total, there are 29 lots in that area, but only 21 of them fall within the area claimed by Mega Land oil palm plantation.

The community was unaware that the area had been surveyed. Following the Court of Appeal's decision in favor of the company, the community intends to pursue an appeal to the Federal Court.

    Robert, Social Activist from Bintulu

*Instead of Emphasizing Rural Development, Minister Should Visit the Interior to Assess Public Sentiment*

Len Talif Salleh, the Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, has reaffirmed the importance of rural development as a top priority in Sarawak. He emphasized that the GPS led state government remains dedicated to prioritizing essential infrastructure projects and implementing comprehensive development initiatives that benefit all communities across Sarawak. Robert has highlighted that despite Malaysia celebrating its 60th anniversary, there are still numerous regions within Sarawak lacking essential infrastructure. He has called upon the government to impartially provide all Sarawakians with the welfare and rights they deserve.

Robert has made a specific request for Minister Len Talif Salleh to personally visit the interior regions and witness their conditions. As an illustrative example, he pointed to the situation in Ulu Sebau, which is a mere 40 kilometers away from Bintulu. Despite the proximity, students in Ulu Sebau must still rely on boats to reach their schools, as the GPS government has not constructed even basic bridges. This makes the journey to school exceptionally challenging, particularly during the rainy season when river levels rise, posing significant risks to the children's safety.

Robert's overarching argument is that despite Sarawak's 60-year membership in Malaysia, the GPS state government has not adequately addressed the infrastructure issues in the interior regions. Consequently, many residents in these areas continue to grapple with challenges related to accessing clean water, education, and communication facilities.

*Challenges to Diversity: Critiquing the Push for an Islamic Malay Administration*

Four days ago, a coalition of Islamic NGOs in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan proposed the establishment of an Islamic Malay government/administration without DAP (Chinese) at the state and federal levels. The reason – because of the big victory of all the Muslim Malay candidates in the last 6 state elections and the majority of the current members of parliament are Muslim Malays. Furthermore, according to the Chairman of Ummah Defender Movement – Mohd Zai Mustafa, DAP oppresses Malay Muslims in Selangor and Sembilan state.

According to Dennis, this pro-Islam NGO statement is not true. Monopolizing national and state administration based on Islamic Malay alone is against the concept of power sharing which is the basis of the formation of Malaysia. If this basis is set aside. Then there will be an imbalance that will affect the unity of the country.

Dennis also criticized the racist actions that took place in Sarawak that made Sarawak a rich state but the distribution of wealth was unequal. Melanau Malays dominate everything to the extent that other races continue to lag behind the current of development. The appointment of all important positions is monopolized by Malay/Melanau leaders in the UN.

From the highest positions of TY, Premier, Speaker of the National Assembly, Speaker of the National Assembly to senior positions such as Deputy Prime Minister and Ministers at the federal and state levels. The Dayaks were left out.

The appointment of acting TYT for example. Asfia is a Malay Muslim from the PBB party. While there are still many capable Dayak Iban leaders who are not appointed to that position. If this continues, racial disharmony will occur – according to Dennis. Dennis hopes that the basic concept of the formation of Malaysia (Power sharing among all races) will be the guide for all political parties in this country.

    -----------------------

Mustapha Along, member of JKOAK from Kelantan

*Orang Asli Neglect and Development Disparities in Kelantan*

In the recent state election trend, PAS retained its ruling position in Kelantan. However, despite numerous development projects being planned and initiated, the anticipated benefits and outcomes have yet to materialize. Furthermore, the economic foundation of the state is facing sustainability challenges, primarily due to its heavy dependence on logging as the main source of income. This overreliance is problematic due to the limited availability of forest resources. The long-term impact on the state's economy is a significant concern.

It's important to note that all development projects are currently handled by the federal government. Regrettably, the state government has not introduced any projects aimed at alleviating poverty among the Orang Asli communities in Kelantan. Compounding these issues is the strained relationship between the Kelantan state government and the federal government. This strained relationship could potentially lead to negative consequences in terms of collaborative efforts and resource allocation.

Furthermore, there has been an encroachment by state government agencies on the lands of Orang Asli communities in Kampung Angkeh. While over 30 individuals have lodged police reports, there are still many who are yet to do so. As a result, the release of a comprehensive press statement has been postponed until all affected villagers have submitted their police reports.

    Nasir Nash, Orang Asli Activist

Nasir Nash Commented on the recent state election, emphasizing that in a democratic country, it is essential to respect and abide by the outcomes. He acknowledged the practice of Islamic concepts by the Kelantan State and noted that while this practice must be accepted, the focus should shift towards evaluating the developmental initiatives led by the state government. Nasir Nash highlighted the importance of evaluating various aspects of development, including economic progress, the well-being of the people, and overall state advancement. Despite the religious context, he emphasized that development should benefit all residents of Kelantan, irrespective of their beliefs.

*Rabies Infected Zone Declared in Marudi Ahead of Baram Regatta 2023 *

The Sarawak Veterinary Services Department (VSD) recently issued a significant announcement, officially designating Marudi as a rabies infected zone. This declaration comes in anticipation of the upcoming Baram Regatta 2023 scheduled for next month, which is expected to draw a considerable number of visitors.

Elias, a concerned local resident, highlighted a shift in the approach towards managing the stray dog population in Marudi. During the initial outbreak of the first rabies case, organizations like the Marudi District Council actively pursued stray dogs as a preventive measure. However, over time, the emphasis on hunting down stray dogs has diminished, leading to a noticeable rise in the number of dogs freely roaming the streets.

This trend has raised several concerns, particularly in light of the upcoming Baram Regatta. Elias called upon individuals who are dog advocates to take responsibility for their pets and prevent them from wandering unrestricted. He stressed the importance of maintaining vigilance to avoid any potential rabies transmission risks during the event.

As Marudi assumes its new classification as a rabies infected zone, the focus on managing the stray dog population gains renewed importance. With the convergence of visitors expected for the Baram Regatta 2023, it is crucial for both local authorities and the public to collaborate in ensuring the safety of everyone by preventing the unchecked roaming of dogs and potential rabies exposure.

*SLAPP Tactics in Focus: Jamilah Taib's Suit Against BMF in Swiss Court*

Celine and the delegation from Sarawak are in Basel Switzerland to attend the Rainforest Tribunal and will then attend the trial of the defamation suit brought by (Jamilah Taib) daughter of TYT Sarawak Taib mahmud against BMF. Explaining about the Rainforest Tribunal - according to Celine it is a staging that talks about the deforestation/logging that is happening in Sarawak (Borneo). Many parties were called to testify, including logging workers, scientists, journalists, activists, politicians and the indigenous/Penan people who every day feel fear and threats every time they defend their forests. According to Celine, although we are unable to stop logging completely. But at least, we are informed, consent from us should be obtained and our rights should be respected. We also question - where are the results of logging for decades?. Celine was excited because many parties sent positive feedback (especially Sarawakians) and wanted to join the campaign against deforestation.

    --------------------

Salomon Ngau, master of the traditional Sape musical instrument from Baram

*Deforestation Causing Cultural Loss: The Shameful Honor of Samling*

Samling Group received the distinguished 'Most Diversified and Value-Adding Timber Manufacturer' award from the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) as part of their 50th-anniversary celebration. The award was presented in the presence of Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg. STIDC commended Samling for diversifying their operations, prioritizing high-value production, and aligning with the Sarawak government's goal of boosting the timber industry and achieving RM8 billion in annual exports by 2030.

However, amid this recognition, Salomon expresses discontent with Samling's honor and raises thought-provoking questions about the ethics of deforestation and the resulting extinction of trees. Salomon, a master of the traditional Sape musical instrument, has dedicated years to both studying and crafting Sape instruments. He highlights the necessity of the Adau tree for crafting Sape, but due to rampant deforestation, these trees are now increasingly scarce and at risk of extinction. The scarcity of Adau trees as raw materials has driven up instrument prices and led to a decline in the number of people learning this art. Beyond the economic implications, this situation presents challenges for the continuation of this traditional culture.

Salomon asserts that the destruction caused by deforestation cannot be viewed as honorable. He draws attention to the fact that these forests are vital for sustaining indigenous communities, and the negative impact extends beyond livelihoods. Practices such as preserving indigenous culture through music are also suffering due to the consequences of destructive logging activities.

*From Ballots to Land Battles: PAS State Government Accused of Encroaching Orang Asli Ancestral Lands*

After the conclusion of the state elections in six states on August 12, PAS secured significant victories in Kelantan, Kedah, and Terengganu. While the public anticipated the state governments to implement policies beneficial to the people, news emerged that indigenous lands in Kelantan were being encroached upon by the state government, contradicting this expectation.

On August 16, 2023, more than 30 communities from Kpg Angkeh in Gua Musang, Kelantan, including Nora, jointly filed a police report at IPD Gua Musang. The incident revolves around the encroachment by the Kelantan state's Yayasan (Foundation) onto land owned by the Kpg Angkeh community.

This encroachment led to the destruction of their gardens, which contained fruit trees, rubber trees, and other crops, all without obtaining Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC). Their water catchment area was also impacted. The community, under Nora's leadership, organized a press release on-site to draw attention to the issue. The encroachment came to light when one member of the community discovered the incident while visiting their garden and informed the entire community.

Nora herself suffered losses, as her paddy farm and vegetable garden were also destroyed. Adding to the complexity of the situation, the Kelantan state agency, Tok Kenali, erected signboards claiming the land as state government property and prohibiting the community's access to the affected areas.

As a response, more communities are expected to file police reports, highlighting the urgent need to address this encroachment issue and the broader concern of land rights and sustainability.

*Defending Vulnerable Groups' Rights Amid Death Threats? Siti Kassim Calls for Fair Police Investigation*

The police investigation into the discovery of two homemade bombs found beneath the car of lawyer-activist Siti Kasim has reached a standstill. According to Kuala Lumpur police chief Shuhaily Zain, the examination of CCTV footage from various locations has failed to identify any potential suspects. Furthermore, no fingerprints were found on the explosive devices except for Siti's fingerprints on the vehicle. Siti Kasim expressed her surprise at this turn of events. However, she expressed disappointment upon learning that the CCTV cameras at the Kajang court complex car park were not operational. She stated, "I don't know whether it's true or not, but I was told that the CCTV (there) is not working." The incident unfolded on July 21 when Siti noticed two suspicious objects beneath her car after taking it to a workshop in Kuala Lumpur for routine servicing. She documented the discovery in a video posted on Facebook, showing what appeared to be plastic water bottles attached to her car's suspension. The bomb squad was subsequently dispatched. Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain later confirmed that the objects were improvised explosive devices (IEDs) intended to cause harm to Siti. In response to the situation, Siti highlighted her involvement in advocating for indigenous rights and various cases, including indigenous individuals dying in detention centers and land disputes. The threat she now faces is unexpected, as most threats were previously limited to online platforms. Adding to her concerns, Siti expressed frustration at the shifting stance of the police. Initially, there were indications of imminent arrests, but the situation has changed. She is now calling for a more comprehensive investigation into the matter.

John Brian Anthony, Sarawak Iban Social Activist

*True Dayak people in PBB are being used to deceive for votes*

John gave an analysis of PAS's big victory in the elections in 6 states. According to John, PAS's big victory was due to 2 reasons. First because by voting for PAS you will get a ticket to heaven. But not all Muslim Malays will believe this narrative, because many know that only GOD can decide who can go to heaven or hell. But the most effective argument is - the supremacy of Malay Islam.

According to PAS- no matter how bad the Malay Muslim administration is, they should be supported- because they are brothers of the same religion and nation. As good as any other party like DAP - they are still a different race and a different religion. Therefore, there is no other argument that can fight the narrative of the Islamic Malay vote campaign.

According to John the same thing happened in Sarawak. The narrative of PBB supremacy (Bumiputra Pesaka Party Bersatu) led by the Premier of Sarawak is very effective. The people of Sarawak were asked to vote for PBB because PBB is a Dayak (Pesaka) party and a Malay Bumiputra (Bumiputra) party. Therefore, there is no other party that is better and more qualified to govern Sarawak - other than PBB.

But John reminded the Dayak people in the PBB. That they are only complementary and of little value. This is proven that TYT is from PBB Bumiputra Malays, the Premier of Sarawak is also from PBB Malay Bumiputra. The Deputy Prime Minister, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Speaker of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly - all of them are Bumiputra Malays in Sarawak. So, the Dayaks in the PBB are bribed with some small positions and few contracts and projects. This is what actually happened in Sarawak - according to John Brian.

John Bara, social activist from Baram Tinjar

*The so-called success of Samling is founded on the illegal logging of indigenous NCR lands*

Samling Group was honored with the 'Most Diversified and Value-Adding Timber Manufacturer' award by the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC). This recognition came as a result of Samling's efforts to diversify its operations and focus on high-value-added production. These initiatives align well with the Sarawak government's aspirations to enhance the timber industry's growth and achieve a target of RM8 billion in annual export earnings by 2030.

However, John Bara's comments shed light on another aspect of Samling's activities. He pointed out that Samling had a presence in the Tinjar area, where it encroached upon lands with Native Customary Rights (NCR). While Samling did provide compensation for their actions, a bridge damaged in the area was left unrepaired by Samling. Their rationale for this was that the compensation amount already covered it. Furthermore, Samling did not offer any additional assistance to the affected villagers.

Despite providing the compensation agreed upon with the villagers, Samling's engagement seemed to stop there. The key issue highlighted here is the importance of recognizing and respecting the rights of indigenous communities. This involves not only addressing compensation matters but also includes restoring and maintaining vital infrastructure like interior roads and bridges. These infrastructure elements are essential for transporting plantation goods from interior areas to urban markets. The indigenous communities' desire is not solely about financial aid from governmental bodies or logging companies, but rather a comprehensive infrastructure setup that supports their overall way of life and economic activities.

  • John Brian Anthony, Sarawak Iban Social Activist

*Past Patterns, Future Predictions: The Black Hole of Sarawak's Wealth Ventures*

John gave feedback regarding the launch of Sarawak's Future Wealth Fund which was recently launched and received an initial fund of RM8 billion. I'm sure it will fail- said John Brian. Proven in the past, all the schemes and funds launched. Which is said to enrich the people of Sarawak. Everything has failed. And the person who questioned the loss of this large amount of money, YB Chong Chen Jen was sued by the Sarawak state government in Court. This is called "The Black hole".

According to John Brian since long ago, the Sarawak government has launched various schemes using public funds. For example ASSAR, LCDA-PELITA, SELCRA, SEDC and since 1970 the Sarawak government announced that 5% of the timber revenue will be returned to the Sarawak Development and Wealth Fund. But until today, none of the children of Sarawak know where all this money is. The state government is not responsible and not transparent in the management of the intended funds. He assured that the newly launched fund will also lose and the money will be lost as well. Just like what happened to 1MDB.

John Brian also questioned the appointment of Sarawak Premier's son - Abang Abddilah Izzarim as an independent director of BERJAYA LAND. A well-known real estate and gambling company. Is the son of the premier of Sarawak so capable or is there a purpose for the company involved in using him to get a project, contract or land from the state of Sarawak. Come on, I invite RFS listeners to monitor the activities of BERJAYA LAND in Sarawak.

Barnie Lasimbang, Executive Director of Right Energy Partnership with Indigenous Peoples

*Indigenous People's Rights in Focus: Relevance of a 'Third Force' Explored*

The theme of this year's Indigenous Day forum is "Empowering Indigenous Youth: Agents of Change for Self-Determination and Just Energy Transition."

Barnie stated that the future belongs to the youth of today, emphasizing the need for them to step forward, understand the workings of the world, and grasp the significant impact of current climate change on the future.

He expressed that the youth are the future stewards and thus, this year's Indigenous Day focuses on strengthening their awareness, particularly in terms of indigenous rights and environmental protection. However, he also admitted that many young individuals lack interest or awakened awareness in these matters.

Amidst busy work schedules and economic concerns, he believes that urgent issues concerning the environment and climate can awaken more young people's attention and motivate them to take leadership roles in planning for the future.

Regarding the election results in the six states, he expressed genuine concern, particularly about issues revolving around race and religion. Deputy Chief Minister Jeffrey Kitingan recently mentioned in the media that the Dayak people in Sabah and Sarawak could be considered a third force. Barnie Lasimbang expressed support for this notion; however, he also raised a question – have the rights of indigenous people truly been recognized? If not, then how can such a force be present? If even state governments suppress indigenous people, how can any force be relevant?

    -----------------------

George Laing from Uma Akeh Baram

*For the People or for the Cronies? George Laing's Question on Wealth Fund's Intent*

The election results in the six states of West Malaysia have fallen short of expectations, with PH securing three seats and PN-PAS also securing three seats. Despite PAS predominantly focusing on the 3R theme, George Laing does not believe that PAS's influence can extend to Sarawak.

He argues that Sarawakians are mature enough not to play with religious issues. He further states that even if PN-PAS were to enter Sarawak, it wouldn't easily influence the people there.

Regarding the launch of Sarawak's Future Wealth Fund, George believes it's a positive step for the people. He mentions that the inland communities need this fund the most as they lack basic infrastructure like water and electricity supply, roads, etc. Thus, the state government's support is crucial for them. However, the question arises, is this truly for the people? George poses the question, or is it for the party's or cronies’ interests?

*Wealth for Whom? Exploring Political Dimensions of Sarawak's Future Wealth Fund*

Gabril commented on the launch of the Sarawak Future Wealth Fund launched by the Premier of Sarawak today, with an initial fund of RM8 billion. Generally, it is the right course of action. But is it politically motivated which will eventually become the material of the GPS campaign, to prove that GPS is a successful party in building wealth for future generations.

According to Gabril, Sarawak is the state with the most poor people in Malaysia, but the state with the most agricultural products. Why can't the state government allocate some money to free poor families in Sarawak from the shackles of poverty. I am also not convinced of the honesty and transparency of GPS government administration in Sarawak. I am not convinced that they will manage these funds transparently and responsibly. For example in the past - ASSAR was established to generate wealth for the people of Sarawak. Finally ASSAR was closed without reasonable explanation. What is the final statement of the ASSAR account. LCDA was established to develop the land of the Sarawak Indigenous/Dayak NCR. But in the end many Sarawakians were cheated and many cases ended up in court. This is among other examples of how GPS bullies the people of Sarawak. Another hot issue last week - related to the Sarawak Premier's son being appointed as an independent Director of BERJAYA Land. Berjaya Land is one of the largest real estate developers in Malaysia. Why was Abang Abdillah Izzarim (son of the Premier of Sarawak) appointed to that position? Is it because he is capable or to make it easier for BERJAYA Land to get projects and contracts in Sarawak. This is a conflict of interest. The children of state officials were appointed to certain positions when their father was the head of the state administration. I am very disappointed with the GPS administration in Sarawak - Gabril said.

Election Aftermath: State Governments Remain, but Election Offenses Raise Concerns

The result from recent 6 states election where previous states" govt all retained their respective state govt. 3 on east coast Kelantan, Kedah and Kelantan remained under PAS and PN, while Penang , N. Sembilan and selangor remained in the hand of PH and BN

In Bersih observation during campaigned period, where several election offence were detected and must be investigated. There were voters identification already used by others to cast their vote. This is stolen identity. Police report already been lodged. And another issue in Seberang Jaya where PH candidate was found printed mock ballot papers to influence the voters to vote for PH.

Police may open investigation paper. Also Acting Menteri Besar Sanusi after he marked his ballot paper he then showed it up. That is also an offence under Sec 5 of election offence. Also the police will investigate . Also reported that Damansara Hot Booth where parties still campaigned during polling day.

Bersih was satisfied with turn out percentage. Usually state election turm always low. But this time round the turn out was about 70 percent. This is good turn out. Good job .

Abun Sui, Senator of Sarawak PKR

PN's Emphasis on 3R Issues Influenced Six States Election Results

Following the recent peninsula state elections, Abun Sui comment that opposition coalition wins to Perikatan Nasional's (PN) focus on race, religion, and royalty (3R) matters. Despite PN making gains in PH strongholds like Selangor, both sides retained three states each.

Abun Sui acknowledged PH's solid performance, particularly in Selangor. However, he pointed to PN's use of 3R issues as a reason for some seat shifts. Urban and mixed-ethnic areas continued to favor PKR and DAP.

He urged effective handling of 3R-related concerns, emphasizing that electoral victories should align with competent governance.

Abun Sui cautioned against changing the federal government, praising Anwar Ibrahim's administration for boosting investments. He anticipated the unity government's stability.

For Sarawak, he speculated the election impact might not be direct but warned of potential distancing due to 3R emphasis. In the state elections, PH-BN retained Penang, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan, while PN kept Kelantan, Terengganu, and Kedah.

PH-BN achieved two-thirds majorities in Penang and Negeri Sembilan, securing 29/40 and 31/36 seats. PN swept Terengganu, and in Kedah and Kelantan, they won 33/36 and 43/45 seats respectively.

    Simon Siah, Lawyer/Human Rights Activist

*False Accusations and Legal Drama: Save Rivers Prepares for High Court*

Today the 4 directors of Save Rivers (SR) were called to the Miri police station to give evidence and be investigated under act 504 of the penal code and act 233- the communication and multimedia act 1998. This investigation follows a police report made by the CEO of Samling Playwood - Laurence Chia who alleges that SR launched a campaign/petition urging Samling to drop the 5 million defamation suit case by Samling Playwood against SR. As a result, CEO Samling's email was flooded with 5700 objections/requests to drop the suit. According to Simon Siah, SR did not launch any related campaign or petition. If there is, it is done by other parties and has nothing to do with SR. Samling's CEO also claimed that SR caused a commotion during the mention of the case in the Miri high court a few months ago. Once again Simon Siah explained that it was an untrue accusation. Because as long as I was in the Court at that time, the situation was calm and peaceful. Simon concluded that what Samling did was an act of desperation and tried to tarnish SR's image. The 5 million ringgit defamation case by Samling against SR will be heard in the Miri high court on 18 to 20 September 2023. In the suit involved, Samling accused SR of issuing defamatory statements in their publication regarding the MTCC process which was supposedly carried out completely and perfectly in their timber concession area. Whereas in reality the residents involved in the Samling back concession area were not informed at all as required by the MTCC. Simon will represent SR in the trial on 18 to 20 sept 2023.

*Stealing Our Future: Sarawak's Carbon Business and the Ongoing Plight of Indigenous People*

Sarawak Premier Abang Joe continues to promote the carbon business in the media. But Brother Joe has never met the native people (forest owners) how this business will benefit the native people. Therefore I believe through this carbon business. It is a new way for the GPS Sarawak government and the logging and plantation companies in Sarawak to seize and continue to control the NCR land of us Sarawakians. This carbon business also involves replanting wood. This seems to describe the logging companies that are destroying our forests -care and love the environment. But in fact they are the ones who destroy the forest and the environment. According to Dennis, in the past these companies only controlled the forest, land and river. But now they also dominate the airspace in our area - said Dennis Along. The GPS government and YBYB GPS in the Sarawak state assembly failed to protect the interests of the people of Sarawak - especially the natives. All laws related to carbon business were passed easily in the Sarawak State Assembly. We the people of Sarawak have the right to know and if the carbon business is not profitable for us. We will object.

Iswardy Morni, lawyer activist from Sarawak

*PH/BN has a chance to seize Kelantan*

A few hours left before the end of the election campaign in 6 states. The PAS party suddenly announced that the party will change the Menteri Besar and Deputy Menteri Besar if it still wins in Kelantan. While in Terengganu and Kedah will retain the existing Chief Minister, if PAS still wins and governs. Iswardy explained that for almost 2 weeks of campaigning, the PAS Party found that there was a rejection of the current Menteri Besar (Kelantan). So in order to bring back the support of PAS supporters to the party, the announcement was made in haste. However- according to iswardy- looking at the tendency of voters. There is a possibility that PH/BN can seize Kelantan from PAS. The voting process in 6 states will take place tomorrow - 12 August 2023.

    GEORGE from Baram

*Sarawakian Energizes PH Campaign in Selangor, Stresses Positive Atmosphere*

George is currently in Selangor to support the PRN campaign for PH. He is very excited about the support for PH and believes that Selangor remains under PH's control. There was no excessive provocation during the campaign in Selangor.

Regarding the issue of agriculture and farming, which can be expanded using technology as stated by Sarawak's Commodity Minister Dr. Stephen Rundi, George mentioned that the Minister only speaks without fully examining the current situation. Because what does technology mean? Especially since the problem of rising agricultural costs that burden the people remains unresolved. How can technology be used for ordinary people besides big companies like factories.

*Empowered Unity: Dayak NGOs Forge Alliance Free from Government Influence*

Basically he agrees on Datuk Dr. Penguang Mangil challenges that if all Iban NGOs are unite under one umbrella will be platform to be strong and voice of the Iban will be heard.

Ideally that is what we all bern looking for. Not only Iban but all Dayak NGOs should unite, but each of the organisations has its own ideology, agenda and target. Thats why what we see now cant be united. What we can do to unite is that we must keep independant NGO so that they can deliver their work freely, and not under control by government.

He suggests that all the Dayak NGOs to set up one federation so the all the Dayak NGOs can work under one umbrella. He also put forward to Datuk Dr.Penguang Mangil that he Challenge all the Dayak Politicians must also unite.

*Countdown to Election Day: The Battle for Power in Six Key States*

In less than 48 hours, voters in 6 states will vote to elect representatives to the DUN of Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, N9, Selangor and Penang. PN/PAS is still trying to give hope to their supporters that a big victory in 6 states will allow them to capture Putrajaya/Federal Government. According to Iswardi- in terms of logic and mathematics, there is no possibility that GPS and GRS will support PN/PAS even if the Unity Government loses in 6 states. But these are all PAS tactics to give encouragement and hope to their supporters to vote and continue to support PN/PAS. Actually - according to Iswardi the people of Sabah and Sarawak are very anti PAS Party which brings extreme Islamic ideology. PAS President Hadi Awang in his latest speech yesterday claimed that GPS and GRS will support PN/PAS to form a new government in Putrajaya if they capture 6 states in the August 12 poll. In addition to the PAS vote argument, you will get a ticket to heaven. PAS also issued a statement today. Voting for a tyrannical leader will be a sin. Iswardi agreed that voting for a tyrannical leader would be a sin. Therefore, he asked the people in Kelantan to reject PAS because PAS has oppressed them by not being able to supply clean water to the people of Kelantan. Until recently, the federal government gave a large allocation to supply clean water for the entire state of Kelantan. In general, Iswardy thinks the PH/BN Government will be able to maintain victory in N9, Selangor and Penang. Terengganu will still be won by PAS. But the situation is still 50/50 in Kedah and Kelantan.

    Zulhaidah Suboh, PKR Sibuti Chief

*Voices of Concern: Zulhaidah Challenges Lukanisman's Commitment to Sibuti*

Deputy Health Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni has addressed allegations from netizens suggesting a decreased focus on the needs of his Sibuti constituency. He clarified that despite his demanding official commitments in other areas, the people of Sibuti remain a priority in his heart. Lukanisman emphasized that his advocacy for enhanced education and health services remains unwavering. He expressed his continuous dedication to providing dignified services to Sarawak, underscoring the importance of quality education and healthcare facilities in the region.

Zulhaidah responded, questioning the prioritization of the people when constituents find themselves unable to seek assistance or resolve issues at Lukanisman's service center. She mentioned that those who voted for Lukanisman often turn to the PKR Sibuti for help when they hit a dead end, and she is committed to assisting regardless of party affiliation.

Lukanisman asserted that the people of Sibuti are close to his heart, yet actions have not reflected this sentiment through tangible support and aid.

Zulhaidah outlined persistent shortcomings in basic infrastructure development and poor internet coverage in Sibuti. She noted that while political awareness is now primarily garnered through social media, inadequate internet coverage hinders the progress of the people in Sibuti.

She pointed out that despite being a Deputy Health Minister in the federal government, Lukanisman has failed to improve the medical facilities in Sibuti.

Zulhaidah, who is currently in Penang assisting with the PH election campaign, emphasized that PH campaigns on the basis of accomplishments, highlighting their impressive track record in governing states like Selangor and Penang to appeal to voters. With only two days left until the election, she urged voters from the six states to return home and cast their votes.

    Pn Agnes from Selangau

*Challenges on the Field: Farmers Respond to Tech-Centric Agriculture*

Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Dato Sri Dr. Stephen Rundi, emphasized the crucial role of technology in elevating Sarawak's agriculture sector. He underscored that embracing technology is essential for the state to enhance its agricultural development.

In response to Dato' Sri Dr. Stephen Rundi's assertion about technology's significance, Pn Agnes raised a pertinent question, "Does this technological advancement primarily favor larger corporations? How does it benefit small-scale farmers like us?"

She further highlighted that pressing concerns such as escalating costs of agricultural essentials such as pesticides and fertilizers have yet to be effectively addressed by the government.

Pn Agnes pointed out the dissonance between the decreasing price of palm oil and the persistently high costs of vital inputs like pesticides, fertilizers, and palm oil seeds. In this context, she questioned the feasibility of progress for small farmers within this challenging landscape.

Calling for tangible action, Pn Agnes urged Dato' Sri Dr. Stephen Rundi to regularly visit agricultural fields, gain insights into the obstacles faced by small farmers and planters, and explore practical solutions to aid them. She emphasized the need for actions to match eloquent speeches made at events, stressing the importance of concrete efforts in addressing the issues at hand.

*Sarawak Government Hypocritical in Carbon trading*

The local press reported that Sarawak has approved 2 carbon trading licenses which were each given to PETROS (Petroleum Sarawak Berhad) and to Samling through SARACARBON Sdn.Bhd. These two companies will collect and store natural carbon (CCUS). It was also reported that Sarawak will get around RM315 million to RM1.039 billion a year from carbon trading. Will the Aboriginal people get a share of the profits?. The answer is no. In fact, according to Andrian, the movements and activities of Indigenous people in the gazetted land area for carbon trading will be controlled and subject to strict regulations. They can also be driven out, in other words the Area that has been gazetted will be strictly controlled and all human activities prohibited. However, the press also reported that the Sarawak government did not plan to end the issuance of logging licenses to fully switch to carbon trading. This was confirmed by Sarawak Forest Director Datu Hamden Muhammad- in a media release today. For Andrian- this is where we see the hypocrisy of the Sarawak government. Every effort is made to enrich capitalists like Samling. At the same time Aboriginal land was confiscated and they did not benefit from carbon trading at all.

He points out the lack of consultation by the state government and relevant authorities. Furthermore, the exact location for the proposed carbon trading, spanning a vast area of 2,000 hectares for a century, remains undisclosed. Gahin emphasizes the necessity of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) from local communities before initiating the project. He is concerned about the potential adverse impact on the affected communities' livelihoods.

*From Settlement to Demolition, GPS must find out who is the scammer who scam the villagers in Sg Tumuk*

Received a report that several houses in Sg Tumuk, Petrajaya have been demolished, allegedly because these homeowners illegally occupied a Malay cemetery site for decades. It's understood that these homeowners purchased the land through a company claiming to be intermediaries back in 2004, built houses, and lived there for over twenty years. They even received a letter from then-MP Fadillah Yusof (now Deputy Prime Minister) to SEB and SASCO for water and electricity connections. After decades of settling in and even spanning three generations, they were recently informed of their illegal encroachment on the Malay cemetery reserve and were subsequently demolished. Jeffery stated that the police, anti-corruption agency, and local representatives must investigate who falsely sold the land to these residents under the guise of intermediaries. He also called for Fadlina Yusoh to come forward and assist. Although these residents have been provided with new affordable housing, the efforts of the past decades cannot be overlooked.

    ------------------------

Dominic Langat, an activist from Baram

*Voices from the Margins to object the high income of rural people*

Dominic does not believe in the income figures provided by the Sarawak government for urban areas averaging around 7,000 MYR and rural areas around 4,500 MYR. Langat uses the example of the Penan community to illustrate his point.

The Penan community can be divided into three categories:

    1. Penan from the Suai region, who have estimated income from oil palm plantations exceeding 7,000 MYR per month – this might be accurate.

    2. Penan and other Ulu people working in urban areas, with a minimum wage of 1,500 MYR per month, not reaching 3,000 MYR.

    3. Those living in remote areas like Ulu Baram, earning less than 1,000 MYR or maybe 3,000 MYR per month due to their heavy reliance on forest resources. The forests have been significantly depleted by logging companies, making life even more challenging for the Penan and Ulu people, who used to hunt, fish, and sell forest products for their livelihood. However, these resources have been decimated by logging and farming activities. Lack of proper roads is also a major issue for Ulu people to transport their goods to urban markets.

How can the Malaysian Department of Statistics and the Sarawak Chief Minister claim that Sarawak is a high-income state? Recently, Dominic Langat tried to purchase fish at a market in Marudi but was disheartened by the lack of visitors, limited choices, and absence of fish for sale due to river pollution, as reported by a market vendor.
