    > Zuraida Kamaruddin has been ordered by the High Court to pay RM10 million to PKR for breaching a binding party bond. The court ruled that the bond was valid and Zuraida's claim in the suit was an afterthought. The judgment stated that Zuraida herself had acknowledged that the party had spent over RM10 million on her candidacy during the election, which she cannot retract.

    > Rosmah Mansor is seeking to postpone the July hearing of her appeal to overturn her corruption conviction as well as a 10-year jail sentence and RM970 million fine linked to the RM1.25 billion solar hybrid energy project. Her legal team sought the postponement pending the disposal of a related appeal at the Federal Court.

    > Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil today lambasted the parties behind an edited headline of a news item posted on Facebook that later went viral. He said the original headline, “Jangan guna jentera kerajaan kempen untuk parti politik – Fahmi” (Do not use government machinery to campaign for political parties - Fahmi), used by a Malay daily has been edited with the additional words, “Kami guna takpe” (But we can) by certain quarters.

Yb Chew Choon Man, PKR MP for Miri

*Zuraida is a traitor, Must pay 10 million ringgit*

Chew Choon Man was among the panel of lawyers who sued Zuraida (Former Ampang/PKR MP). During the "Sheraton Move", 11 PKR MPs left the party causing the ruling PH government to be overthrown. One of those 11 is Zuraida.

During the trial in court, Zuraida's legal team argued that the 10 million claim was too high and extreme.

However, PKR's lawyers argued that the damage faced by PKR was priceless. PKR has built the party's reputation over 20 years. PKR gave a place and a logo for Zuraida to compete. PKR supplies the election machinery, provides funds and full support. Therefore the claim of 10 million is too small. the loss against PKR is priceless. There are Malaysians who consider the PKR party to be the party that betrayed the people's mandate because of Zuraida and her friends' act of party jumping. Because of Zuraidah's actions, the administration of a kingdom collapsed.

In court, Zuraidah argued that she won because of her reputation, but GE15 proved that with the lack of support from PKR, she lost so badly that she lost her betting money. According to Choon Man, he and PKR's lawyers have been instructed to hunt down the remaining 10 traitorous frogs. On Friday 23 June 2023. The high court ordered Zuraida to pay RM10 million to PKR for violating the terms of the bond binding her to PKR.

Residents of Kampung Long Biak, Belaga

*Illegal Logging happened in Long Biak, Belaga*

    Complaints about illegal logging.

A villager from Long Biak who did not want to reveal his name told RFS that a logging company entered the village area to log. This logging company uses a very cunning strategy to mislead the villagers. A log road was built a few months ago. But it was decided after the company brought all the heavy equipment into the logging camp. After the tree felling work is completed, the road is resumed and the process of unloading logs to be transported to Bintulu. But yesterday this activity was detected by the residents of Long Biak. They have detained and confiscated the logging camp and asked for consultation. Who is the owner of this logging license is still unknown. However, from unofficial information, the residents believe it is owned by Limbang Maju Jaya Logging Company and their subcontractor KD (don't know the real name, only KD's name is written on their log truck.)

The residents protested and asked to be paid compensation. Negotiations are still ongoing. According to the residents, the next target area is believed to be the reservoir center and source of water supply for the residents - because there are still many high-quality logs in the area involved. The complainant was worried that the situation would become tense, as some residents were carrying chopsticks. But he hopes this matter will be resolved well.

    ------------------------

    Solomon Gau from Ulu Baram

*We want roads link to City, not only within Village*

The state government will build 5,000 kilometres of roads to link remote and unconnected longhouses throughout the state by 2030, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said. He said the state Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development is in the final process of identifying these longhouses and villages that are presently not connected by roads.

Solomon is no stranger to the repetitive promises made by the GPS government. He expresses his frustration that interior residents have been waiting for roads for decades, constantly hearing about plans for road construction and access to water and electricity, only to receive empty promises every time. Solomon points out that the government emphasizes that the 5,000 kilometers of roads are intended for villages without existing road connections, implying that road construction is limited to within the villages themselves. This means that the roads built are restricted to the village areas, and the routes from the villages to the towns remain as logging roads, not included in the government's intended construction plans. He questions the usefulness of such road construction. Solomon explains that while it is beneficial for the roads from the villages to the road junctions to be built, the logging roads from the junctions to the towns remain unchanged. These roads become slippery during the rainy season and covered in sandy layers during the dry season. Solomon states that inland residents have to spend significant amounts on transportation expenses or fuel costs when traveling to and from the towns. Moreover, transporting harvested crops to the towns becomes expensive due to the winding nature of the logging roads, resulting in increased costs for agricultural produce. He urges the GPS government to provide a comprehensive road construction plan instead of hastily building roads within the villages in an attempt to meet the demands of interior residents.

Jeffrery Ngui, chairman of MUDA Sarawak

*Sarawak's Development Lag Attributed to State Government Neglect*

In a Facebook post, an activist lawyer expressed her opinion on Borneo, specifically Sabah and Sarawak. The post has gone viral with 5000-7000 shares. What is interesting about her post is that she stated if she had to work in Sarawak or Sabah, she would resign within 24 hours. She expressed that Sarawak is not a good place to work or live in. There are important points regarding the development lag since the formation of Malaysia, which we agree upon. However, that does not justify belittling the people of Sabah and Sarawak. Sarawak has long contributed to the economic development of the country through resources such as natural gas and petroleum. The diversity of race, religion, and background in Sarawak is a significant pillar for community harmony. In her closing lines, she mentioned that even after 60 years, Sabah and Sarawak are still left behind. Many Borneo people are forced to leave due to the lack of good job opportunities and quality livelihoods. She also stated that many government agencies are not staffed by local people, which she attributes to a lack of quality. As a lawyer and activist, it is unclear why she made these statements without further context or explanation.

  • Peter Kallang, Chairman of Save Rivers

*Contradictory Actions: Samling's Lawsuit Against SAVE Rivers and Praise for their Work - Greenwashing or Genuine Intent?*

Samling has filed a lawsuit against SAVE Rivers, an environmental organization, focusing on eight articles published on SAVE Rivers' website from June 2020 to March 2021. According to the plaintiffs, these articles contain false statements regarding Samling's efforts to obtain sustainable forestry certification. They are seeking 5 million ringgit in damages and a restraining order against SAVE Rivers and its directors. This lawsuit has faced criticism from 160 organizations, who argue that it is a strategic litigation against public participation (SLAPP) case. They believe that the substantial fine could potentially bankrupt SAVE Rivers and its directors, suggesting an attempt to suppress public criticism.

However, it has recently Samling posted a photo on their website showcasing the work of SAVE Rivers. The photo is featured in a section titled "Engaging and Supporting Local Communities." Unfortunately, the webpage erroneously claims that all the photos are credited to Samling's staff.

Peter Kallang, in response to this, has accused Samling of greenwashing. He does not understand the purpose behind Samling's decision to sue SAVE Rivers while simultaneously praising their work.

Peter Kallang emphasizes that any project involving communities should adhere to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aiming to fulfill sustainable development while ensuring that no one is left behind. According to Kallang, any project that affects communities should also provide benefits to those communities, rather than solely benefiting the companies involved and neglecting societal concerns. He believes that this approach is not aligned with the principles of the SDGs.

    Asraf, Bersih Steering Committee

*State Governments Should Officially Inform the EC of the Early Dissolution Date of the State Assembly*

Bersih insists that the uncertainty of the election date is something that burdens and unsettles the public and businesses who are awaiting the announcement of voting day for the state elections (PRN) for six states this year.

Although BERSIH is aware that there are some Menteri Besar/Chief Ministers who have already approached the Sultan/Yang di Pertua state to get approval for the dissolution of their respective State Legislature (DUN), but until now there are still some who have not officially informed the EC about date of dissolution.

BERSIH calls for all states to act responsibly by officially informing the EC of the planned dissolution date, either automatically at the end of the term or earlier with the approval of the Palace. This allows the EC to determine the nomination date and voting day immediately because the EC does not need to wait for the dissolution to happen, instead only requiring official notification from the State Government.

YB Chiew Choon Mun, PKR MP for Miri

*Affordable Housing Crisis in Miri: High Prices Force Relocation, Calls for Government Intervention*

Due to soaring housing prices, residents in both urban and suburban areas are finding it increasingly difficult to afford homes. The situation is particularly dire in Tukau, on the outskirts of Miri, where the cost of living has compelled many to relocate, leaving them unable to purchase homes.

Chiew, suggests that the Sarawak government should take inspiration from the housing policy implemented by the Selangor state government. This policy focuses on providing low-cost flats, enabling financially disadvantaged individuals to own homes with minimal financial burden.

Chiew further emphasizes the need for the GPS government to regulate construction costs and housing prices in Miri City. Without such intervention, residents of Miri will be burdened with lifelong housing loans without being able to fully enjoy their homes.

    ----------------

Hj Yahya, Head of UsahaJaya Tukau village Miri

*Anger Mounts as Compensation Denied and Political Representatives Neglect the People*

Hj Yahya shared a report with Radio Free Sarawak.

yesterday he and two other people attended the mention case in Court and he (Hj Yahya) will have a hearing on 05.09.2023.

According to Hj Yahya, the work of cleaning the area by Land and survey and the developer will still be carried out this Saturday, which is tomorrow. But unfortunately because even one cent of compensation will be given to the people of the village.

Hj Yahya is very angry with Taib Mahmud's family such as Datuk Raziah who do not care about the fate of the people and are willing to let the people vacate the place without compensation.

Hj Yahya is also determined to bring the people from Kampung Usaha Jaya Tukau Miri to reject the GPS because their representatives YB Ripin and YB Lukanisman also did not come down to see the people's situation. Hj Yahya will not collude with the GPS leadership in the future.

*Zero Carbon City by 2030? Abang Jo never discussed it in the State Assemply*

In the conference "Shape The World Summit 2023 in Kuching on Wednesday. The Premier of Sarawak said - Sarawak is aiming for Kuching to become a Zero Carbon City by 2030. This is all a false hope - said Chong. According to Chong, the issue related to the full use of hydrogen and electricity in the city of Kuching was never discussed in the Sarawak State Assembly. Until now, there is no policy related to the full use of hydrogen and electricity for public use in Kuching. Therefore, the Premier's statement is just to be heard. Chong requested that the Premier devote all his energy and finances to improving the living standards of the people, especially the poor in rural areas. According to Chong, the current price of electric cars is RM180k and hydrogen cars are not yet available in the Malaysian market. How can this dream of Premiere Sarawak become a reality?? - asked Chong. Full focus on improving the standard of living and welfare of the people of Sarawak - CJ Chong.

*More Dams is only for cronies’ personal interest*

The 1,285mW Baleh hydroelectric project in Kapit is expected to begin operations by 2028, said Premier Abang Johari Openg. He said construction on the Baleh Dam is currently on schedule for completion within the next three to four years although he did not give the current progress percentage.

Dam issue has been hot topic long time ago. Started from Batang AI, bakun, murum and Baram. Now come to Baleh dam in kapit.

Wonder why government still wants more dams. At this stage we have over supply according to capacities. Batang Ai and Bakun dam are operating part of the turbine. So what is the purpose for more dams. Are all these dams needed by the people of sarawak or there is other agendas. Personally I object to dam construction. We have seen dams caused destruction to our forest. One dam flooded thousands hactres of our forest. Are those dams are for the benefit the people or just for their personal interest. I still remember what the Late James Masing said 'no dam no road' what does it mean. We have been objected to any dam construction

But if the local community hesitate to fight against it, what can we do.

The strong struggle is from the affected community. Even if there is NGOs afford, still not enough

    ----------------------

Tay Wei Wei, PKR Sri Aman

*Allegations of Bias and Abuse of Power by Community Leaders in Sarawak*

Tay Wei Wei does not deny that there are still cases of favoritism among community leaders in Sarawak, and he has received several complaints regarding community leaders who refuse to cooperate by signing forms requested by longhouse communities simply because these communities are staunch supporters of the opposition party (PH). Moreover, there are also community leaders who do not distribute government projects to opposition supporters.

Tay Wei Wei emphasizes that this is a wrongdoing, and citizens should not be afraid to report such abuse of power by certain community leaders (not all) to the police. Community leaders who are strong supporters of GPS in Sarawak should adhere to the Prime Minister's instructions and follow the call for "Segulai Sejalai" as recently proclaimed by the Prime Minister.

    Exclusive Report

A Complainer revealed the bad working condition in Semalajau that related to taib and political cronies

RFS received a complaint from a father - telling that his son who works with Press Metal - Samalaju/Bintulu Sarawak, as a technician lives in a residence (provided by the employer) which is not satisfactory.

The living quarters are made of iron boxes, poorly ventilated and very hot. He sympathizes with the plight of subordinate workers like his son. But he admitted that high-paid workers were given better housing. In relation to working hours, only one day off is given in a week and there are workers who work 4 consecutive night shifts, from 7pm to 7am.

This must be a violation of the Sarawak labor ordinance.

Asked why the Sarawak Manpower Department did not conduct a surprise inspection and take action against Press Metal. He replied that it is not possible to take action against Press Metal, because it is related to Taib and Sarawak's political cronies. He thinks that PMX Anwar Ibrahim has not been able to take drastic corrective action in Sarawak since GPS is still strong and Anwar needs support from GPS to continue as Prime Minister. Because he can't stand the pressure of work. His son has quit his job with Press Metal.

Call for Government Focus on Pepper Prices Amid Challenging Cocoa Market Conditions

Fadillah Yusof, the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and Minister of Plantation and Commodities, has announced that the federal government is willing to assist Sarawak in obtaining more land for cocoa plantation projects. While Sarawak was initially allocated only 10 hectares of land for cocoa cultivation this year, Fadillah emphasized that the support and assistance provided to cocoa growers in the state are not limited to land allocation. He expressed the government's willingness to cooperate with the Sarawak government to expand the area of new cocoa plantations.

Pn Agnes from Selangau disagrees with the proposal for cocoa planting as stated because she categorizes her own experience of planting cocoa trees, which did not yield any results and instead caused significant losses due to pest attacks and low market prices, which were very detrimental.

She said that the government should focus more on the prices of pepper, palm oil, and rubber because these three crops are seen as weakening and their prices are low in the market. She urged for assistance to be provided to small-scale farmers who are increasingly suffering losses in their various crops, as the market prices for cocoa, pepper, rubber, and palm oil are very concerning.

We are in the opinion that project is a waste of public funds although they said that project is funded by certain company. Will the company really want to finance it without other intentions

The project is still a govt project. That 30mils is better to spend it on other good purposes. There are areas that still lack of infrustrure especially in the interior. Why are we so proud to have that flagpole that serves no purpose. We have so many poor peoples that really need help in term of finance. Mahmud Epah comment that is it time to proves Taib's significant wealth and demonstrates how he used his position for the benefit of his family to accumulate more wealth. The son's accusation against his stepmother regarding the property also proves how Taib enriched himself by seizing people's land and properties, such as in Bakun, where he issued empty promises to the local community in order to take over their land and forest rights for the construction of a dam. Now is the time for us to wait for the results.Abun Sui argues that this is a case of a family dispute over property, and the people have not benefited from it. The only way the people of Sarawak can benefit is if this wealth remains in Sarawak.

Izdham Zainal, the Head of Policy Bureaus of MUDA Sarawak

*Unmonitored Vape Sales: Youth at Risk and the Need for Regulatory Measure*

MUDA has raised concerns about the unmonitored sale of vape products. In the recent budget announcement by PMX, it was mentioned that vape products would be subject to taxation. However, the Health Minister stated that nicotine would not be classified as a poison and products containing nicotine would not be monitored. This raises concerns about the impact of such a decision, particularly regarding the easy access to vape products for underage individuals through unmanned auto vending machines. There have been reported cases of children suffering from nicotine poisoning. Although there was an initiative called "endgame" to prohibit smoking for those under 18, the corresponding bill was not approved. The implication is that nicotine is not effectively regulated, which poses a danger due to the lack of enforcement. This situation is particularly concerning for youth and those still attending school.

*Sarawakians who have evidence of Sarawak leader involved in corruption, please report to MACC*

Today the case of Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib's (second son of TYT Taib Mahmud) suit against his stepmother Ragad Kurdi was declared in the Kuching high court. Sulaiman sued Ragad for giving away a large number of shares belonging to his family without consent.

The case will be heard again on August 15, 2023.

Meanwhile, Ragad's lawyer asked the public not to speculate. For Iswardy - people are free to express their views as long as they do not insult the court.

This is also an open opportunity for the people of Sarawak to learn about Taib Mahmud's wealth. This case should be discussed and discussed in Sarawak so that Sarawakians know how rich the political leaders they have supported all this time are, while the majority of Sarawakians are poor.

PMX's openness asked MACC to state that high-profile leaders if there is evidence that they are involved in corruption and abuse of power should be taken advantage of by the people of Sarawak. The people of Sarawak should not remain silent. Anyone who has evidence please come forward.

    -----------------

Baru Bian, MP of the Bakelalan cum secretary general of PSB

*hopes that MACC will re-investigate the case of Sarawak TYT Abdul Taib Mahmud*

Recently PSB president Wong Soon Koh issued a statement that PSB fully supports the leadership of Anwar Ibrahim and the unity government to correct some of the mistakes made by previous leaders. Among the mistakes of the previous administration, according to Baru Bian, was allowing racial and religious extremists to dominate the country's political landscape and not having the strength to fight corruption.

Baru Bian saw PMX Anwar more daring to issue an open statement so that the MACC is independent in their investigation and investigate anyone (even high profile politicians) if there is evidence they should be prosecuted. Baru Bian hopes that MACC will re-investigate the case of Sarawak TYT Abdul Taib Mahmud who was previously released by MACC because it was said that there was insufficient evidence.

According to Baru Bian- no Sarawakian believes that Taib Mahmud is not involved in corruption and abuse of power. But at the end of his statement, Soon Koh said that he would fully support the Premier of Sarawak - Abang Jo. According to Baru Bian- good policies will be supported. While policies that harm the people will still be opposed. In particular, the land law needs to be amended sec 5(3) and (4). The ownership limit of only 100 hectares of customary land should also be amended as well as the state government's failure to develop health, education and road infrastructure.

I will continue to raise and question the GPS government's wrong actions- said Baru Bian.

    ------------------------

Jeffrey Ngui, Chairman of MUDA Sarawak

*Who Sponsored the 30Million Flagpole? GPS need to answer it!*

A flag, claimed to be the tallest in Southeast Asia and valued at 30 million Malaysian Ringgit, has been completed and stands in front of the Kuching Waterfront. While the Sarawak state government takes pride in this achievement, Jeffrey demands answers from the GPS government regarding which company sponsored this project and what the exchange conditions were.

Jeffrey points out that since the GPS Sarawak government expressed its intention to build the tallest flag, there have been mixed reactions from the public. Some question why the government would spend such a large amount of money on something that does not hold any meaningful benefits for alleviating poverty.

Although GPS emphasizes that it was a private company that sponsored the flag, the society still doesn't know who the sponsor is or what the exchange conditions were, even after its completion.

Jeffrey also highlights the irony that near the 99-meter-tall flag, there are still many underprivileged communities waiting for assistance, yet there is no sign of the government or so-called private companies engaging in poverty alleviation efforts. He argues that while the government claims it is a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project, CSR initiatives typically involve poverty alleviation or environmental protection programs, rather than constructing the tallest flag in Southeast Asia valued at 30 million Malaysian Ringgit.

He demands that the GPS government provide a clear explanation for these discrepancies.

    Atan of Pos Tuel Kelantan

*No YBs listen to Kelantan Orang Asli request*

Atan requests the government to build a secondary school in Pos Brooke, Pos Hendrop, and Pos Tuel as the populations in these Orang Asli villages are increasing. The communities also urge the government to establish a fire station in Lojing to address emergencies.

Currently, the nearest secondary school is approximately 80km away in Kpg Panggung Lalat, requiring students to stay in hostels.

Additionally, there is a request for a primary school in the community of Pos Tuel, as the nearest school is located in Hendrop, which is 18 km away.

While there is a clinic in Pos Brooke, there is no fire station in the Lojing area. The community has raised these issues with their elected representative (YB) multiple times, but they are still waiting for a response.

They hope that the government will address these basic needs.

*Time to Expose the Corruption Evidence of Mahathir and Daim*

Iswardy has just been appointed as the information secretary of the PKR and is tasked with making thorough preparations for PKR to face the elections in 6 states which are expected this August. Iswardy explained the development of Tun M's RM150 million defamation case against PMX Anwar Ibrahim. PMX has filed its defense statement through e-filing - among which is evidence that Tun M gave contracts worth RM214.2 million to his children and son-in-law (through Opcom sdn.Bhd) when he was prime minister and finance minister from 1994 to 2021. Mahathir also bail out of KPB (Pos Logistics Berhad (Mirzan Mahathir the majority shareholder) of RM2 billion in 1997. Awarding of contract by Telekom to Opcom Cable Sdn. Bhd worth RM11.157 million and granting of fabrication license to Kencana Petroleum (Owned by Mokhzani).

According to Iswardy this is enough to prove that Mahathir misused his power and enriched his children who Mahathir has often said did not give contracts/projects to his family when he was Prime Minister. Iswardy also told the development of MACR's investigation into Mahathir's strong ally Tun Daim Zainuddin who was also investigated and his account worth RM2.3 billion was frozen. According to Iswardy, PMX Anwar is a forgiving person, but this disclosure and investigation had to be done to prove the truth in court.

Regarding the elections in 6 states - Iswardy is still confident that PH will continue to be in power in P.Pinang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. While having the opportunity to defeat PAS and PN in Kedah and Terengganu.

Elia Bit, activist of PENA (Penan Baram Empowerment Network)

*Criticize GPS for Not Providing Permanent Identity Cards to children under 21yo*

The Sarawak GPS government has introduced Temporary Documentation for Individuals without Citizenship in Sarawak (DSITKS) to ensure access to education and healthcare for children. As of April, 594 applications have been received, and 86 applications from the first group have been approved by the GPS government.

Here we ask, why is the documentation provided temporary instead of permanent?

Elia Bit stated that the DSITKS program was only initiated in November last year. According to her understanding, applications can be made through the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health of Sarawak, and the beneficiaries are children under 21 years old.

Considering the challenging process that Elia has witnessed in assisting interior people with their applications for MyKad, she can accept that DSITKS is a good step, especially for many indigenous children who do not have identification documents. Without proper identification, these children are unable to access education.

She explains that, based on her understanding, children applying for DSITKS must meet the following three conditions:

    1) Either the father or mother must be a Malaysian citizen residing in Sarawak.

    2) The applicant must have a birth certificate registered in Sarawak, and their nationality is yet to be determined, with an application made for Malaysian citizenship according to Article 15A of the Malaysian Constitution.

    3) The age must be below 21 years.

Elia wonders why, if they already have a birth certificate from Sarawak, they cannot be directly given a MyKad. She questions why only a temporary identification document is provided, saying that if the intention is to help the people, it should be done completely and not halfway.

Referring to Article 14 of the Federal Constitution, she highlights that children born abroad to a Malaysian father automatically acquire Malaysian citizenship. Therefore, she finds the conditions for Sarawak children to apply for DSITKS stricter. Since one parent is a Malaysian in Sarawak and the child has a birth certificate, shouldn't they be directly granted a MyKad?

Elia questions the difference between DSITKS and the green identity card (MyKas). Both have an expiration date, but DSITKS is valid for two years. She demands that the GPS government engage with the people, understand the difficulties they face in applying for MyKad, and particularly visit Kuching to verify whether the applications are successful. This would undoubtedly alleviate the financial and time burdens for the people.

Furthermore, she mentions that in most of the cases she handles, is the Penan parents do not have MyKad. In such situations, Penan children cannot fulfill the three conditions for applying for DSITKS. Thus, they cannot obtain this temporary identification document.

Dennis Along, Resident of Long Terawan Mulu

*GPS Gov Fabricating Evidence whenever they want to Seize Indigenous Lands*

30 years ago Bursa Mulu, a company owned by Roziah Mahmutd and her husband Robert Gennet was given PL by the administration of her brother Taib Mahmud to establish Hotel Bursa Mulu. The land belongs to the Asal Tering people. Dennis Along and 14 others sued Bursa Mulu company. But they lost in the high court and the court of appeal. Defeated as a result of their claim being delayed beyond the 60 days required by law. However, when Dennis' lawyer wanted to take the case to federal court. There is new evidence found that the disputed land is no longer owned. So Dennis submitted an application to confirm that the land belonged to them. However, after a few weeks, a new document appeared from the Land and Survey Department which stated that there was a new document confirming that the PL of the land belonged to Bursa Mulu. Dennis was frustrated that the authorities could produce any evidence to support their arguments in court. While the original people who are indeed the owners of the land are denied rights. It is only allowed to submit objections/claims within 60 days after the PL is issued. Dennis and 14 others sued Bursa Mulu, the Sarawak State Government and the Land and Survey Department.

Sevan Doraisamy, Executive Director of SUARAM

*Ex-PM Muhyiddin's Covid-19 measures negatively impacted human rights*

A Suaram report said measures introduced by former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pic) during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic caused negative impacts on human rights, fundamental freedoms and marginalised communities.

This research by CIJ focuses on the measures taken by various countries to address the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in relation to parliamentary sittings. However, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin made the decision to suspend parliamentary sessions. Many other countries, on the other hand, found alternative means such as conducting parliamentary sessions online.

Sevan from Suaram emphasized that Parliament plays a crucial role in approving provisions during the pandemic. While the initial suspension may have been deemed acceptable, there were concerns regarding the repeated suspensions, particularly when a state of emergency was declared while the country was already under the Movement Control Order (MCO).

It was widely believed that these actions were driven by the Prime Minister's political interests to remain in power despite lacking sufficient support. He consistently claimed to have enough support and refused to step down. Another issue raised was the limitation on the right to voice opinions when parliamentary sittings were not held.

*Former Nurse Criticizes Wan Razali's Statement on Nurse Uniforms as Lacking Substance*

Puan Umang, an ex-nurse comment on the issue of Wan Razali PN-Kuantan's statement questioning the ethics of strict nurse uniforms.

Puan Umang states that Wan Razali PN-Kuantan's statement lacks substance and is cowardly. She questions why the opposition often plays the issues of Shariah and religion when PH (Pakatan Harapan) was in power. This implies that soon the kebaya dress might become an issue in the future.

Nurse uniforms adhere to international standards, and she criticizes the narrow and misguided thinking of PN PAS (Parti Islam Se-Malaysia) for issuing such statements in parliament without any sense of shame.

Penan Villages Take a Stand Against Logging

Nick responded to a media report that said 2 Penan villages in Ulu Baram refused to be involved in the auditing process of the Malaysia MTCS Timber certification scheme for the FMU Forest Management Unit. Nick explained that not only two, but the majority of Penan villages in the UBFA-Ulu Baram Forest Area, disagreed with the auditing process. Only a small number of residents agreed - they were probably influenced by Samling's promises. Nick explained that the Penan association and the Penan leaders from each Penan village (within the UBFA Area) had written a protest letter to Samling and that Samling was not allowed to enter the land of the Penan to log. In media reports, only Long Lamai and Ba Lai are said to refuse auditing. Nick hopes that Samling will respect the rights of the Penan people who do not want logging to damage their forests.

    Mahmud Epah, PKR Asajaya

Slams UMNO's Push for Najib's Release

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has revealed that he visited former prime minister Najib Razak in Kajang prison to express the party’s unwavering commitment to push for his release. At the same time, Zaid Ibrahim has urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to free former premier Najib Abdul Razak "for the sake of the people”. According to the former minister, this was because, in the scheme of things, RM42 million (the value of corruption Najib is imprisoned for) is a "small change”.

Mahmud Epah stated that UMNO clearly considers itself an important part of the Unity Government, acting as a "kingmaker" to threaten PMX to release Najib. He said that this is an irresponsible act and should not be exhibited by a member of the Unity Government.

He emphasized that PMX Anwar Ibrahim, has already stated his commitment to institutional reforms and fighting corruption, while Najib has been convicted for corruption. Therefore, PMX should not and does not need to pay attention to such threats.

Mahmud Epah pointed out that UMNO and others should understand that under PMX's leadership, Malaysia is undergoing a transformation and is attracting the confidence of foreign investments, which greatly contributes to the country's development. Releasing Najib would raise doubts about Anwar's ability and determination to carry out reforms. Therefore, UMNO's persistence undoubtedly poses a threat to the country.

*Villagers sue the Sarawak GPS government and Land Survey of negligence in selling Kampung Usahahaya Tukau to Parabena*

Villagers sue the Sarawak GPS government and Land Survey of negligence in selling Kampung Usahahaya Tukau to Parabena. Desmond Ling stated that although Kampung Usahajaya Tukau had lost the legal battle against Parabena in the past in the High Court, Federal Court, and Court of Appeal, which resulted in Parabena owning the village, but one of the plots of land, Lot 189, was previously acknowledged by former Chief Minister Adenan Satem as a kampung with basic amenities such as water and electricity, proving its legitimacy. He said that Parabena had won the land in a court case years ago, which is an undisputed fact. However, he and 12 other villagers are taking the GPS government and Land Survey to court to seek compensation for the loss of their agricultural and residential land. Desmond Ling pointed out that Parabena had already sold the land to multiple developers who now intend to develop it. The villagers have repeatedly approached Lambir State Assemblyman DR Ripin to address this issue but have not received any assistance. He also mentioned that Awang Tengah is one of the directors of Parabena. He stated that if a people's representative has a vested interest in the matter, no matter how the people seek help, they will not receive any response. Desmond Ling noted that although Parabena is currently accusing three village representatives of refusing to relocate, he and the other 12 affected villagers have decided to hire a lawyer and file a lawsuit against the GPS government and Land Survey on June 17. This way, neither Parabena nor the developers can utilize the land until the lawsuit is resolved in court. He pointed out that during Taib's tenure, he used his power to allocate the land in Tukau for his sister Raziah Mahmud's development, despite the village already having the status of a kampung. However, the land was transferred to Parabena, which is owned by his sister. He said that if such actions are carried out by the top leaders, the lower politicians are also affected and will not assist the villagers.

    ------------------

Abqari bin Annuar, Head of Strategic Planning KMUM Students University of Malaya.

*Unity Gov Must Encouraging Political Involvement among University Students*

PMX's action of visiting the University and asking questions with students is good to give space to students to ask questions and bridge the gap between students and national leaders. But the same opportunity should also be given to other politicians, even if they are from the opposition party. Giving an example, before becoming Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was prevented from delivering a lecture at the University of Malaya in 2014. The reason given by the government at the time was because it was against the Universities and Colleges Act 1971 (AUKU). But when Anwar became prime minister - AUKU was not abolished. This is very disappointing. Abqari thinks that university students should be given the space and freedom to be political in an adequate democratic space, as long as it does not violate the limits of democracy. However, Abqari agreed with PMX - so that university students think critically and do not accept 100% of politicians' arguments. Students on the other hand should be able to evaluate, research, read and compare what politicians say. According to Abqari, the Malaysian education system is too oriented towards learning to pass the test, and is still a long way from forming critical thinking students. Therefore, the syllabus/curriculum of Malaysian Education should be reviewed. So that university graduates in Malaysia are not only smart in the majors they choose in the University but also understand political issues. Therefore, political literacy should be intensified. Abqari felt sad that after GE15 racial and religious sentiments were used by political parties to gain support. He hopes that the competing political parties can campaign cleanly, presenting facts and a convincing manifesto.

    ------------------

Barnie Lasimbang, environmental activist from Sabah

*The decision by the European Union to restrict palm oil production in order to minimize forest degradation is a positive development*

We have always hear the inconsistency in oil palm price and operation cost that need inputs such as fertilisers, weedicide and etc. We also question if the govt has enough action plans to assist small holders due to increase cost of the commodity.

There are two holistic issues for oil palm operation, as I'm also one of the small holders, and understand the difficulties face by the small holders. When oil palm price increase, the price of fertilisers and pesticides are increase as well, but when the price of oil palm is decrease, the price of fertilisers and weedicides do not decrease.

Govt should give subsidy or the alternative means of planting oil palm. Like organic fertilisers are much better. And to introduce new agriculture techniques will help to reduce operational cost.

Govt also must monitor and control the price of fertilisers and weedicides.

As per malaysiakini article. There is a truth in the statement by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Sri Fadillah Yusof, on the comparation between oil palm and soya oil. Oil palm is more efficient as it is only plant once and producing in much longer period. Atleast 20 years while other bean need to replanting in every season.

What happened when EU release circular to minimize productions from forest degradation is good as we already have huge area planted with oil palm.

    *Hadi Awang’s statement is exaggerated*

Hadi Awang, the President of the Islamic party PAS, made exaggerated statements on his Facebook page today. He labeled the ruling government as being led by immoral individuals, including prisoners, corrupt individuals, and non-believers. Hadi claimed that the government is influenced by non-Islamic forces and surrounded by silent devils. It is possible that Hadi, due to his old age or mental state, has forgotten certain facts.

Hadi seems to have forgotten that during the first election, the PERIKATAN coalition won 51 out of 52 seats with the cooperation of UMNO, MCA, and MIC. Furthermore, the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition was formed to gain support from the people of Sabah and Sarawak. The previous governments, such as Pakatan Harapan (PH), Perikatan Nasional (PN), and the ruling Perikatan Nasional Bersatu-PAS-UMNO-MCA-MIC coalition, have all supported and represented people of various races, including non-Muslims. Even when PAS ruled alongside PN and BN, it received support from non-Muslim parties. Therefore, Hadi's statements are excessive and should be criticized and condemned, as they attempt to create discomfort and divisions between different races.

On another note, Iswardy Morni was recently appointed as the Information Work Secretary of the Justice Party, and we extend our congratulations to him. However, we received sad news yesterday that he was attacked by an unknown person. The police are currently investigating the case, and we are making efforts to interview Iswardy.

Cikgu Diog, PKR of Puncak Borneo

*Lack of Government Planning Raises Concerns for Sarawak's Agricultural Sector *

According to recent reports, the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) is exploring the use of bamboo as a renewable resource to drive the timber industry in Sarawak. While this initiative holds promise, concerns have been raised regarding the government's lack of comprehensive planning and support for the agricultural sector.

Diog comment that, in the past, the government's extensive logging practices have led to a reduction in primary forests, prompting the need for alternative industries to replace timber.

The proposal to promote bamboo as a sustainable alternative has garnered attention, with potential applications in various commercial products. However, questions arise about the government's preparedness to support this transition.

Market response and the provision of market support and outlets for bamboo products remain unclear. Additionally, it is essential to determine if the government offers subsidies or agricultural supplies to facilitate the cultivation and commercialization of bamboo. Without proper support, farmers may struggle to navigate the challenges of fluctuating prices of oil palm, increasing costs of fertilizers and disinfectants, and the unsold produce, such as black pepper.

Furthermore, concerns have been raised about the discontinuation of agricultural courses for farmers in Puncak Borneo. The absence of courses and follow-ups indicates a lack of government commitment to providing farmer training, which is crucial for the development and success of the agricultural sector.

In light of these issues, it is imperative for the government, local representatives, and the GPS government to address these concerns and provide explanations for the lack of comprehensive planning and support for the agricultural sector. Only through collaborative efforts and proactive measures can the government ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of Sarawak's agricultural industry.

    ------------

    Nicholas Mujah, General Secretary SADIA.

*There will always be a difference between the GPS government's promises and action*

The Borneo Post reported an excerpt from Sarawak Premier Abang Jo's speech at a dinner ceremony in conjunction with Gawai 2023 last year. Abang Jo assured the Sarawak government to remain committed to improving the living standards of the Dayak people in Sarawak. Abang Jo also urged the Dayaks to pay more attention to Education and try to develop their vast land.

According to Nicholas such a speech by a politician is a normal speech. But we as citizens should examine and observe what exactly Abang Jo and GPS are doing in Sarawak. For example to develop Dayak land. The Dayaks need a land title deed, the land is measured and given title. In 2015, the Sarawak State Assembly amended the Sarawak land code to limit the land ownership of a Long house to only 500 hectares.

While there are some Dayak Long houses that are densely populated and reach hundreds of doors/families. Regarding the Sarawak Foundation Education scholarship, 95% of the Foundation is controlled by the Malays. This makes the Dayak people's views not taken seriously. It is even more unfortunate that all Dayak politicians do not dare to oppose all of Abang Jo's ideas because they do not want their positions and salaries to be affected. People should be aware that GPD and Abang Jo say different things but do different things.

    Sevan Doraisamy, SUARAM Executive Director

*NGOs Call on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to Repeal Sedition Act *

Several NGOs have written an open letter to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressing their concerns about the government's lack of commitment to repealing the Sedition Act. They argue that the act is still being employed by state actors to criminalize dissent among activists, media personnel, and opposition lawmakers. The NGOs criticize the law for its ambiguity and the excessive discretion it grants to authorities, enabling arbitrary enforcement and the suppression of speech and expression. The letter also reminds the government that many of its members had previously experienced the impact of similar draconian laws. It emphasizes that Pakatan Harapan had consistently promised the repeal of such laws during their election campaigns. Highlighting the historical origins of the Sedition Act, Sevan from Suaram points out that it was introduced by the British invaders in 1948 to suppress people's struggle for their rights, including freedom of expression and labor rights. While many countries, including Britain, have abolished similar sedition acts, Malaysia continues to employ this law to stifle opposition voices and dissent against the government and enforcement agencies. It is used to target activists who speak out against wrongdoing and the media when reporting information that contradicts the government's narrative. Furthermore, individuals who raise issues on social media platforms are also subjected to its provisions. The persistence of the Sedition Act reflects its deep-rooted historical significance and its continued use to curtail freedom of expression and suppress public discourse in Malaysia. The NGOs call for a timeline for the government to review and repeal the act, underscoring the importance of fulfilling the promise made by Pakatan Harapan to remove such laws.

(call-in) Mr Romuald Siew from Miri

*Plight of Small Oil Palm Farmers*

Mr. Roluald, a small oil palm farmer, expresses that many fellow farmers in the same industry are currently facing distress due to the decline in oil palm prices, while the costs of pesticides and fertilizers remain unchanged. Additionally, they still need to bear the expenses of paying workers' wages. During the previous Movement Control Order (MCO), it was evident that the price of palm oil surged due to high demand. However, palm oil exports were halted during the MCO period as factories were closed. Exploiting this situation, suppliers of fertilizers and pesticides took advantage and increased their prices. Now, despite the decrease in oil palm prices, the costs of pesticides and fertilizers have not decreased. This poses significant challenges for the livelihoods of small oil palm farmers. Therefore, it is crucial for the government to address this matter seriously.
